Book excerpt: Sasha Grey, rising adult film and pop-culture star, takes control in her new monograph "neu sex," moving out from in front of the camera to behind it, turning the lens on the wild world she inhabits. "When I first got into the adult industry, I decided to take my photography much more seriously. I started taking a camera with me to capture my experiences on set, so it was a moment in time, a memory for myself--not the video that would be seen by thousands of people. On days where I was physically unable to capture an image, Ian, my fiance, became my third arm. He understands my aesthetic, or lack thereof. Ian is a photographer, yet the work in this book is quite different from his usual style. When you are so close with someone, there is a shorthand and true understanding of what the other person is trying to accomplish. If there's something I am physically unable to photograph, I can say one word and Ian can assist me with my vision. Ian can capture intimate moments with me that nobody can fabricate, because of our relationship. The strong sense of familiarity eliminates all boundaries between the subject and the photographer. "Documenting myself has almost become a necessity. "There are so many photos of me, taken by other people, that aesthetically I have no control over. Documenting myself allows me to reflect on the day, on the feelings I am having at that second. When you work in the entertainment industry, there are always surprises; there certainly isn't one day that is similar to the last. Personally, it's important to embrace this and appreciate it every day. "Still images vividly capture emotion, a second in time that can be left open for interpretation by the viewer and the creator. I am inspired by the work of Cindy Sherman and Nan Goldin. Sherman's work continues to inspire me to develop certain characters. I figured if I am on set I might as well take advantage of my surroundings, and document my life in an exciting, untraditional manner. I look back at photos, and see how much I've grown, how my opinions have changed, and how they will continue to change." --Sasha Grey

Book excerpt: "Christopher Makos, described by Andy Warhol as "the most modern photographer in America", has a history of seeing trends, fashions and social movements long before most others. His book White Trash, published in 1977, attracted a lot of attention, and included mavens of contemporary culture along with pictures of the emerging punck rock music scene. In 1981, inspired by Rose Selavy, the famous photographs Man Ray took of Marcel Duchamp in drag in 1921, Christopher Makos created the Altered Images series of Andy Warhol. Until now, the story behind the pictures, including the extent of Andy's participation and enthusiasm, has never really been told. Andy includes every image from these historic photo sessions, along with the inside story of the vibrant collaboration between Warhol and Makos."--Jacket.

Book Andy Warhol Ai Weiwei

Download or read book Andy Warhol Ai Weiwei written by John J. Curley and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning publication is the first to examine in tandem the work and influence of two towering figures in contemporary art Andy Warhol (1928-1987) and Ai Weiwei (b. 1957) are two of the most internationally renowned artists of the past 100 years, famous not only for their artwork but also for influencing the culture of their time. This exciting book is the first to consider the work of these artists alongside one another, in dialogue and in correspondence, to explore the artists' meticulous observations of modern and contemporary art, life, and politics. Andy Warhol's investigation of consumer society, fame, and celebrity offers thought-provoking points of connection with Ai Weiwei's interrogation of the relationship between tradition and modernity, the role of the individual to the state, questions of human rights, and the value of freedom of expression. Parallels also exist between the ways in which each artist transformed the understanding of artistic value and studio production, and redefined the role of the artist--as impresario, cultural producer, activist, and brand. Alongside beautifully reproduced images by both artists--including works by Ai Weiwei published here for the first time--are illuminating essays by an international team of art experts, curators, and scholars that survey the scope of the artists' careers and interpret the significant impact of Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei on modern art and contemporary life. This deluxe, collectible catalogue is available in three different, limited-edition colors. Published in collaboration with the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, and the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh Exhibition Schedule: National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (12/11/15-04/24/16) The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh (06/01/16-09/01/16)

Download or read book Mile O Mud written by Malcolm Lightner and published by powerHouse Books. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A native Floridian, photographer Malcolm's first monograph,Mile O' Mud, shows us his home's beauty; scarred and raw, surrounded by lush blue sky and restorative greens and we witness a community unapologetically celebrating their colorful and unique history, full of wild abandon and enjoying every minute of it. Churning the buttery muddy water at the Florida Sports Park, the swamp buggy races keep Florida's frontier heritage alive. A bastard child to NASCAR, these custom buggies (part boat, part dragster) tear through terrain more like the lake in the center of Daytona International Speedway than the track surrounding it. The Jeep class is designed to slog through with the driver's head barely above water and the Pro-modified built exclusively for speed as they hit 75mph and dwarfed by their own four-foot wheels. Fans pile meat in baking pans and cans of Budweiser in boxes and stack themselves in bleachers, truck beds, and on top of home-made platforms to cheer for the Swamp Buggy Queen and pray for drivers' quick recoveries when the track proves too treacherous. Malcolm Lightner grew up down the street from the original "Mile O' Mud" swamp buggy track off of Radio Road. After moving to New York in 1999, he returned at least once a year from 2002 to 2013 to document the races--missing only 2005 due to a hurricane forced cancellation.
