In a kaleidoscopic narrative, New York Times–bestselling author and Salon founder David Talbot tells the gripping story of San Francisco in the turbulent years between 1967 and 1982. The emergence of a diverse cast of characters—Harvey Milk, Janis Joplin, Jim Jones, Bill Walsh—ushered in a transformative new era in the city’s history. Season of the Witch is the first book to fully capture the dark magic of San Francisco in this breathtaking period, when the city radically changed itself—and then revolutionized the world. “An enthralling—and harrowing—account of how the 1967 Summer of Love gave way to 20 or so winters of discontent.” —The Washington Post “A sprawling, ambitious history . . . Talbot’s energetic, highly entertaining storytelling conveys the exhilaration of ‘60s counterculture as well as the gathering ugliness that would mark the city in the ‘70s.” —The Boston Globe “Exhaustive research yields penetrating character studies . . . In exhilarating fashion, Talbot clears the rainbow mist and brings San Francisco into sharp focus.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “A gritty corrective to our rosy memories . . . enthralling, news-driven history . . . smart and briskly paced . . . I found it hard to put down.” —San Francisco Chronicle “An ambitious, labor-of-love illumination of a city’s soul, celebrating the uniqueness of San Francisco without minimizing the price paid for the city’s free-spiritedness.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Talbot presents gripping accounts of both crime sprees and football showdowns.” —Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How political paranoia shaped cinema for a decade: “One of the most readable and damning accounts of that period.” —The Guardian This is the story of how the politicians took Tinseltown to task in the late 1940s and 1950s. As the Cold War with the Soviet Union began in earnest, the search for “Reds under the bed,” later led by Senator Joseph McCarthy, was felt most keenly in Hollywood, where the investigations were carried out under the full glare of the spotlights. Painstakingly researched and drawing on numerous exclusive interviews, this book charts the generation of actors who found their livelihood ruined by being blacklisted and the writers forced to hire “fronts” to continue to work; it reveals how Arthur Miller was offered the chance to have his hearing dropped in return for a photo opportunity with Marilyn Monroe; and how Kirk Douglas’s naming of Dalton Trumbo as the writer of Spartacus signaled the end of this extraordinary era. Witch Hunt in Hollywood is the definitive account of how political paranoia shaped cinema for a decade.

Book Wings Women and War

    Book Details:
  • Author : Reina Pennington
  • Publisher : University Press of Kansas
  • Release : 2002-01-22
  • ISBN : 0700615547
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Wings Women and War written by Reina Pennington and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2002-01-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soviet Union was the first nation to allow women pilots to fly combat missions. During World War II the Red Air Force formed three all-female units-grouped into separate fighter, dive bomber, and night bomber regiments-while also recruiting other women to fly with mostly male units. Their amazing story, fully recounted for the first time by Reina Pennington, honors a group of fearless and determined women whose exploits have not yet received the recognition they deserve. Pennington chronicles the creation, organization, and leadership of these regiments, as well as the experiences of the pilots, navigators, bomb loaders, mechanics, and others who made up their ranks, all within the context of the Soviet air war on the Eastern Front. These regiments flew a combined total of more than 30,000 combat sorties, produced at least thirty Heroes of the Soviet Union, and included at least two fighter aces. Among their ranks were women like Marina Raskova ("the Soviet Amelia Earhart"), a renowned aviator who persuaded Stalin in 1941 to establish the all-women regiments; the daredevil "night witches" who flew ramshackle biplanes on nocturnal bombing missions over German frontlines; and fighter aces like Liliia Litviak, whose twelve "kills" are largely unknown in the West. She also tells the story of Alexander Gridnev, a fighter pilot twice arrested by the Soviet secret police before he was chosen to command the women's fighter regiment. Pennington draws upon personal interviews and the Soviet archives to detail the recruitment, training, and combat lives of these women. Deftly mixing anecdote with analysis, her work should find a wide readership among scholars and buffs interested in the history of aviation, World War II, or the Russian military, as well as anyone concerned with the contentious debates surrounding military and combat service for women.
