Book Patriotism Peace and Vietnam

Download or read book Patriotism Peace and Vietnam written by Peggy Hanna and published by . This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the War in Iraq, Hanna's book is more timely than ever. In the final chapter of her book, she wrote, "The lessons of Vietnam must never be ignored or forgotten." To her that lesson was simple: American citizens must always question our government, and we must never again sacrifice our sons and daughters to political rhetoric and unsubstantiated fears. Or lies. But we didn't learn the lesson after all. American citizens, in the name of patriotism, have allowed our government to trap us in a war that has become a nightmare. Peggy's story is one that many Americans today can relate to as she recounts her struggle with patriotism and dissent, with trying to understand why we were at war, and who was telling the truth. Peggy's story breaks the stereotype of the Vietnam anti-war demonstrators. She was a housewife and mother of five small children. The stereotype of crazed hippie college students, created by the media, caused unnecessary pain for our troops because they believed the protestors opposed them. They didn't! They opposed our government's policies, not our troops. Patriotic moms and dads just like Peggy Hanna took to the streets too but never received the media coverage that the college campuses did. She describes how much peace activists cared about our troops - a message that never made it to the soldiers dug into the trenches or to their families at home. That was one lesson that was learned. Today anti-war protestors are making sure the troops understand they are protesting our government's policies, not our troops. Opposing the war in Vietnam or the war in Iraq, does not take away their sacrifice and their honor. As one college professor said, "This is a book that all Americans should read."

Book Contesting Patriotism

Download or read book Contesting Patriotism written by Lynne M. Woehrle and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During war, space for debate shrinks. Narrow ideas of patriotism and democracy marginalize and silence opposition to militarism abroad and repression at home. Although powerful, these ideas encounter widespread resistance. Analyzing the official statements of 15 organizations from 1990-2005, the authors show that the U.S. peace movement strongly contested taken-for-granted assumptions regarding nationalism, religion, security, and global justice. Contesting Patriotism engages cutting-edge theories in social movements research to understand the ways that activists promote peace through their words. Concepts of culture, power, strategy, and identity are used to explain how movement organizations and activists contribute to social change. The diversity of organizations and conflicts studied make this book a unique and important contribution to peace building and to social movements scholarship.

Book excerpt: "[...] Mere ignorance and indifference on the part of the people of the United States must not be allowed to stand in the way of the adoption of the national policy advocated in this book—a policy that will bring permanent and enduring universal peace to the world. That policy must be adopted. There can be no alternative. The final triumph of militarism would be too appalling to contemplate. Must every woman who bears a son live under the terror that she may have to dedicate him to be mangled in the service of the War God? Must every home remain liable to be ruined and destroyed by the fires of war?[...]".

Book Peace Patriotism and War

Download or read book Peace Patriotism and War written by Frank A. Pellegrino and published by . This book was released on 2004-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book reveals that buried memories from our past lives are often the causes of problems with health, attitude, or behavior problems that can generally be eliminated by enlightened therapy. From his experience as skilled psychic and therapist, the author relates 45 past-life episodes that show dramatic, compelling evidence of after-death consciousness of the human spirit and recurring physical life a reality confirmed by Jesus when he told his disciples who John The Baptist had been in a prior lifetime. These fascinating cases range from the author's own excruciating torture during the Spanish Inquisition, to an engaging renewal of contact with a young woman who remembered being his daughter in two previous lifetimes in ancient Rome. Half of the examples demonstrate that such buried memories can cause systemic conditioned responses often with harmful effects from the trauma of an agonizing death. Evidence includes numerous psychic healings the author accomplished with only his mental energies, breaking the link to the past. Other episodes point out a variety of kinds of circumstances that triggered a past-life recall or caused a latent carryover effect to suddenly erupt. In many cases, two or more people recognized each other from earlier periods. Listing 23 of his own previous lives as illustration, the author discusses why we are engaged in this repeating cycle and suggests things worth considering in preparation for your next trip.

Book Reconsidering Peace and Patriotism during the First World War

Download or read book Reconsidering Peace and Patriotism during the First World War written by Justin Quinn Olmstead and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-05 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a unique view of the movement for peace during the First World War, with authors from across Europe and the United States, each providing a distinctive cultural analysis of peace movements during the Great War. As Europe began its descent into the madness that became the First World War, people in every nation worked to maintain peace. Once the armies began to march across borders, activists and politicians alike worked to bring an end to the hostilities. This volume explores what peace meant to the different people, societies, nationalities, and governments involved in the First World War. It offers a wide variety of observations, including Italian socialists and their fight for peace, women in Britain pushing for peace, and French soldiers refusing to fight in an effort to bring about peace.

CHAPTER XIII THE RELATION BETWEEN THE SEXES When the first year of the war was nearing its close, a middle-aged American lady visiting in my home said to me: "Nowhere will the war bring about more radical change, more unexpected changes, than in the relations between the sexes." What way out will the millions of women find, who will more than ever have to give up all hope of realizing their longing for love and children? A few months later I had another American lady in my home, this time a young girl, who put the same question, only with the alteration natural to her age. "What will become of all us young girls who could formerly reasonably expect to marry, but who now see their chances infinitely diminished?" Millions of older women are wondering, as the first one did, for the sake of the younger ones; millions of younger women axe wondering for their own sakes. Quite a number of plans have already been suggested in Europe to relieve the abnormal sex conditions, which have, of course, met with a great deal of opposition. Some one in London has conceived the idea of founding a "society for the marrying of wounded heroes," an appeal to woman's selfsacrifice and patriotism to make the lives of these men bearable and to propagate children who will inherit their fathers' qualities of heroism. These wives who would, in most cases, have to become the supporters of their families, would, therefore, be paid a man's wages and would, in many cases, also be given a stipend to facilitate their marriage. To, therefore, mate men to women suitably, it is suggested to have committees of clergymen and physicians. For it is not proposed to let the parties choose themselves. Women who are physically strong will be expected to marry men who need to be...
