Book The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion Vol 1

This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 1048 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion, Vol. 1: Part II; Medical History, Being the Second Medical Volume The nature of the subject will, I trust, justify this determination. Not only do the Alvine Fluxes usually cause more sickness and mortality among troops during war than any other group of diseases, but this circumstance affords a better opportunity for their study than can commonly be obtained in times of peace, so that it has heretofore happened that many of the most important accounts of these disorders, whether in ancient or modern times, have been the fruit of military experience. When I came to study carefully the documents and pathological specimens relating to this subject which had been collected by the industry of our Medical Officers during the Civil War, I formed the opinion that they were well worthy of presentation in detail; and when I began the task of interpreting them by the aid of previous experience, I was led to believe that the time had arrived when modern observations might profitably be contrasted with the records of the past, and the historical basis of the dominant opinions of the present day be subjected to careful and critical scrutiny. Book A Treatise on Military Surgery and Hygiene Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Treatise on Military Surgery and Hygiene Classic Reprint written by Frank Hastings Hamilton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Military Surgery and Hygiene But surgery, like many other departments of knowledge which have been compelled to submit to this tyranny, and to contribute reluctantly to the perfection of a barbarous art, has, in its application to the purposes of war, we are happy to say, other and more legitimate ends. It is equally the mission of the Military Surgeon to prevent, as far as possible, all useless expenditure of life. In civilized war fare life is spared whenever a firelock is grounded, or an arm is disabled; and, so well is this understood, the wounded soldier does not hesitate to throw himself upon the mercy of his captors for surgical aid, since he is equally certain of receiving succor from the surgical corps of a foe as of a friend. Consider how much this serves to soften the savage aspect of war; that if battles must be fought, the results should be obtained with as little sacrifice of life, with as little mutilation and suffering as possible. The world is indebted to our profession for this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion (1861-65), Vol. 1: Surgical History Therefore, in 1865, it was suggested, in the report of materials available for a Surgical History of the Wari' that the wounds and operations be classified according to regions, important cases being described at length, and brief abstracts or numerical tabular state ments being furnished of the less important cases. It was decided that this plan should be adopted, and that the reports of medical directors and others, relating to the field service, should be published as appended docu ments to the Medical and Surgical History.
