Download or read book Food Guide for War Service at Home written by Herbert Hoover and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food Guide for War Service at Home: Prepared Under the Direction of the United States Food Administration in Co-Operation With the United States Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Education In the spring of 1918 the Collegiate Section of the United States Food Administration was called upon to prepare a simple statement of the food situation as affected by the war, suitable for elementary and high school teachers, high-school pupils, and the general public. The demand arose because of the wide adaptation of the three courses on this subject then being sent out weekly to universities, colleges, and normal schools throughout the country. This little volume is the response to the request. It was written by Katharine Blunt, of the University of Chicago, Frances L. Swim, of the Chicago Normal School, and Florence Powdermaker, of the United States Department of Agriculture. The records of the Food Administration have been open to the writers and they have had the advice and criticism of its officials and specialists. No effort has been spared to secure accuracy of statement in the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book War Time Control of Distribution of Foods

Download or read book War Time Control of Distribution of Foods written by Albert N. Merritt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Time Control of Distribution of Foods: A Short History of the Distribution Division of the United States Food Administration, Its Personnel and Achievements In the attempt to present a brief history of the Dis tribution Division of the United States Food Adminis tration, we have found it quite impossible to treat the activites of this division apart from that of the whole Food Administration. The work of all divisions was so closely inter-related that it is difficult to point to a single achievement of any division which could have been effected without the closest cooperation and assistance from a number of Divisions which had charge of other phases of the activity. However, as we do not wish to write a history of the Food Administration as a whole, a task which has been left to other hands, we shall confine ourselves largely to a statement of the relation of the Distribution Divi sion to the main Food Administration program. The fact that space does not permit us to refer especially to the activities of other divisions should not in any way detract from the importance of the service rendered by them, nor is it intended to qualify in any degree the previous statement that many of the achievements mentioned could not have been accomplished but for the coiiperation of all branches of the Food Adminis tration. Book Science the Endless Frontier

Download or read book Science the Endless Frontier written by Vannevar Bush and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic case for why government must support science—with a new essay by physicist and former congressman Rush Holt on what democracy needs from science today Science, the Endless Frontier is recognized as the landmark argument for the essential role of science in society and government’s responsibility to support scientific endeavors. First issued when Vannevar Bush was the director of the US Office of Scientific Research and Development during the Second World War, this classic remains vital in making the case that scientific progress is necessary to a nation’s health, security, and prosperity. Bush’s vision set the course for US science policy for more than half a century, building the world’s most productive scientific enterprise. Today, amid a changing funding landscape and challenges to science’s very credibility, Science, the Endless Frontier resonates as a powerful reminder that scientific progress and public well-being alike depend on the successful symbiosis between science and government. This timely new edition presents this iconic text alongside a new companion essay from scientist and former congressman Rush Holt, who offers a brief introduction and consideration of what society needs most from science now. Reflecting on the report’s legacy and relevance along with its limitations, Holt contends that the public’s ability to cope with today’s issues—such as public health, the changing climate and environment, and challenging technologies in modern society—requires a more capacious understanding of what science can contribute. Holt considers how scientists should think of their obligation to society and what the public should demand from science, and he calls for a renewed understanding of science’s value for democracy and society at large. A touchstone for concerned citizens, scientists, and policymakers, Science, the Endless Frontier endures as a passionate articulation of the power and potential of science.

Book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States

Download or read book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.
