Book The Great War and the British Empire

Download or read book The Great War and the British Empire written by Michael Walsh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1914 almost one quarter of the earth's surface was British. When the empire and its allies went to war in 1914 against the Central Powers, history's first global conflict was inevitable. It is the social and cultural reactions to that war and within those distant, often overlooked, societies which is the focus of this volume. From Singapore to Australia, Cyprus to Ireland, India to Iraq and around the rest of the British imperial world, further complexities and interlocking themes are addressed, offering new perspectives on imperial and colonial history and theory, as well as art, music, photography, propaganda, education, pacifism, gender, class, race and diplomacy at the end of the pax Britannica.

Book excerpt: A masterful and comprehensive chronicle of World War II, by internationally bestselling historian Antony Beevor. Over the past two decades, Antony Beevor has established himself as one of the world's premier historians of WWII. His multi-award winning books have included Stalingrad and The Fall of Berlin 1945. Now, in his newest and most ambitious book, he turns his focus to one of the bloodiest and most tragic events of the twentieth century, the Second World War. In this searing narrative that takes us from Hitler's invasion of Poland on September 1st, 1939 to V-J day on August 14, 1945 and the war's aftermath, Beevor describes the conflict and its global reach -- one that included every major power. The result is a dramatic and breathtaking single-volume history that provides a remarkably intimate account of the war that, more than any other, still commands attention and an audience. Thrillingly written and brilliantly researched, Beevor's grand and provocative account is destined to become the definitive work on this complex, tragic, and endlessly fascinating period in world history, and confirms once more that he is a military historian of the first rank.

Book British Naval Aviation in World War II

Download or read book British Naval Aviation in World War II written by Gilbert S. Guinn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-07-20 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the outome of the Battle of the Atlantic from 1939 to 1945 depended Britain's survival in the midst of a global war. The need to control the sealanes to Britain was mirrored by a need to control the skies above. Carrier based aircraft and seaplanes would play an important role in defeating the German submarine menace and in combating her surface fleet. However, at the start of World War II Britain possessed neither the training or industrial establishment necessary to develop this arm of warfare. From 1940 onwards the United States provided answers to the problem firstly in the form of American built aircraft, then American built aircraft carriers and finally American trained pilots. Even before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm pilots were being trained in the United States under a scheme set up by the United States Navy as part of the Lend Lease agreement. In the safer skies over the United States American Navy pilots would train British aviation cadets how to fly and to fight. This process is examined from a variety of different perspectives including the military, diplomatic, educational and cultural. For many young British aviation cadets the journey across the Atlantic and across America was as surprising as it was lengthy. Many would find themselves caught up with issues such as segregation in the American South of which they had little understanding. The book is based on interviews and correspondence with hundreds of former cadets who trained in the United States in the 1940s together with material from the British and American archives.

Book Historical Parallels Commemoration and Icons

Download or read book Historical Parallels Commemoration and Icons written by Andreas Leutzsch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical parallels, analogies, anachronisms and metaphors to the past play a crucial role in political speeches, historical narratives, iconography, movies and newspapers on a daily basis. They frame, articulate and represent a specific understanding of history and can be used not only to construct but also to rethink historical continuity. Almost-forgotten or sleeping history can be revived to legitimize an imagined future in a political discourse today. History can hardly be neutral or factual because it depends on the historian’s, as well the people’s, perspective as to what kind of events and sources they combine to make history meaningful. Analysing historical analogies – as embedded in narratives and images of the past – enables us to understand how history and collective memory are managed and used for political purposes and to provide social orientation in time and space. To rethink theories of history, iconology and collective memory, the authors of this volume discuss a variety of cases from Hong Kong, China and Europe.

  • Author : Andy Saunders
  • Publisher : Grub Street Publishing
  • Release : 2011-12-27

Download or read book Finding the Fallen written by Andy Saunders and published by Grub Street Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-27 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Finding the Few presents more stories of lost airmen and the dedicated detective work done to find them. Mysteries involving missing aircrew span almost the entire twentieth century. Starting with a reappraisal of the famed story of pilot Edward “Mick” Mannock, the author of this book highlights the fates of RAF, USAF, and Luftwaffe personnel from bomber, reconnaissance, and fighter crews. Each case is examined with a microscopic and forensic approach worthy of a CSI episode, and evaluates the detective work involved in unraveling these long-unsolved disappearances of lost airmen. In many cases, there is a satisfactory conclusion in which family members can feel some closure—while in others, question marks are left hanging over. These fascinating stories remind us of the heroic ongoing efforts to truly live up to the phrase “no man left behind.” Includes photos
