Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Blindness at St. Dunstan's IF an apology is needed for yet another War book it is, I claim, furnished by the subject-matter of this little work. Everybody knows something about St. Dunstan's, and the late Sir Arthur Pearson, shortly before his sad death, published in his Victory Over Blindness a very complete and detailed history of St. Dunstan's, its life, its work and its aspirations. Nevertheless, nothing has been published with regard to the nature and characters of the blindness on account of which St. Dunstan's came into existence. So long ago as May, 1920, I promised Sir Arthur Pearson that I would try to present the work at St. Dunstan's from a purely medical standpoint, so that there should be some sort of a technical record of Blindness among the British Armies during the Great War. The following pages, delayed by illness and the pressure of heavy work, are the result of this promise; but I am painfully conscious of the inadequate manner in which the task has been fulfilled. Much desirable information with regard to many of the cases has not been obtained, and much pathological investigation has been left untouched. Unfortunately, the exigencies of the times, when one was rushing about from hospital to hospital, prevented full advantage being taken of the wonderful store of material at St. Dunstan's. I can only say that I have done my best, by means of my notes compiled in those critical days, to classify and analyse the cases of War Blindness which came under my care, and to deduce from them certain lessons. For what is lacking I ask indulgence; and such as it is, I offer this result of my endeavour to the illustrious memory of the Great Founder of St. Dunstan's, a man whose life was. Book excerpt: Discover the stories of the men and women who sacrificed their sight for their country. Since 1915 St Dunstan's (now Blind Veterans UK) has helped thousands of war-blinded men and women to rejoin society and live their lives to the full. This compelling book includes new research from the St Dunstan's archive and previously untold stories of the people, both blind and sighted, involved in the charity during the First and Second World Wars. St Dunstan's was founded by Sir Arthur Pearson, a blind press baron determined to prove that the blind could make a valuable contribution to society. Early St Dunstaners played football against Arsenal; learned to read braille, type, row and even shoot; and trained for new careers as masseurs, carpenters, switchboard operators and gardeners. As PR officer at St Dunstan's for 35 years, David Castleton worked with many of the men and women whose stories he tells in his book, and provides a unique insight into their achievements. Meet irrepressible Tommy Milligan, who lost his sight just months after enlisting on his eighteenth birthday, and Ian Fraser, blinded on the Somme, but later president of St Dunstan's. David Bell, who lost his hands and sight in a North African mine-field, yet found hope and a wife at St Dunstan's. War-blinded servicewomen also joined the charity during the Second World War, including 22-year-old Gwen Obern, blinded and maimed in a factory accident but later famed for her singing, and ATS sergeant Barbara Bell, who became a top physiotherapist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History has told us something about our war dead but very little about our war wounded. Veterans with a Vision provides a vibrant, poignant, and very human history of Canada’s war-blinded veterans and of the organization they founded in 1922, the Sir Arthur Pearson Association of War Blinded. Serge Durflinger details the veterans’ process of civil re-establishment, physical and psychological rehabilitation, and social and personal coping and describes their public advocacy for government pension entitlements, job retraining, and other social programs. This book captures the spirit of perseverance that permeated the veterans’ community and highlights the accomplishments of the war blinded as advocates for all Canadian veterans and for all blind citizens.

Book Managing Voluntary and Non Profit Organizations

Download or read book Managing Voluntary and Non Profit Organizations written by Richard Butler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on detailed empirical data and a range of case studies, Managing Voluntary and Non-Profit Organizations, first published in 1990, demonstrates how voluntary organizations formulate strategies for securing funds, providing services, and dealing with other non-profit bodies, public agencies, and the private sector. The central theme is organizational change and how managers have responded, strategically and structurally, to changes to their environment. Using original data, and writing from the broad perspectives of current organization theory, the authors increase our understanding of strategies, structures and designs currently in use in the voluntary sector. Their authoritative text will make essential reading for practising managers in non-profit organizations and for an international audience of academics and students of management, organization theory, and strategy.
