Book Wanderings in Arabia Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wanderings in Arabia Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Charles M. Doughty and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings in Arabia, Vol. 1 of 2 No critical estimate could sum up better than the above the characteristics of Arabia Deserta. And it is for the sake of the appeal that this great book should make to a wider audience than the few who feel enthusiasm for Arab things that I have sought and obtained the author's sanction to make the abridgment of his narrative here presented. It is, indeed, in the conviction that the book has only to become known to the English public to be hailed by all for what it is - a masterpiece second to none in our literature of travel - that I have attempted the task of abridgment. And here the writer must confess that he knows no other book of travel which makes him so proud that the author is an Englishman. Gentleness, courage, humanity, endurance, and the insight of genius, these were the qualities that carried Doughty safely through his strange achievement of adventuring alone, a professed Chris tian, amid the fanatical Arabians. That he proclaimed his race and faith wherever he went is a supreme testimony to the firm ness of his spirit and to the magnetism of a frank and mild nature that evoked so often in response the humanity underlying the Arabs' fanaticism. His narrative, indeed, testifies how much milk of human kindness the solitary stranger could count upon finding in the breast of all but the most fanatical Mohammedans. But it is surely less the author's valuable discoveries than the intense human interest of his book that will bring him enduring fame What an unforgettable picture it is, that of this Englishman of an old-fashioned stamp adventuring alone for many long months in the deserts of Arabia, going each day not very sure of his life, yet obstinately proclaiming to all men, to sheykhs and shepherds, to fanatical tribesmen in every encampment, that he is a N asrany, a Christian With a pistol hidden in his bosom, and a few gold pieces in his purse, with a sack of clothes and books and drugs thrown on the hired camel of his rafiks, or wandering guides. Book The Heart of Arabia Vol 1 of 2

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of Arabia, Vol. 1 of 2: A Record of Travel Exploration Of the pleasant year I spent sojourning and wandering amid the deserts and oases of Arabia I have endeavoured to compile a record, at once fully descriptive of my own experiences and designed to serve my successors as a faithful guide in their wanderings, when in their turn they take up the torch which has been held in the past by so many distinguished hands - Niebuhr and Burckhardt, Sadlier and Burton, Doughty and the Blunts, Wallin and Wellsted, Huber and Halevy, Euting and Guarmani, and, in modern times, Shakespear and Gertrude Bell, to name but a few of those whose names are writ large on the scroll of Arabian explorers. It was with little fitness to undertake geographical or scientific work of any kind that I entered Arabia, but chance led me far afield from the tracks of those who had been in that country before me; and natural curiosity, fortified by a sense of duty, impelled me to record day by day and almost hour by hour everything I saw or heard in the course of my wanderings in the hope that some day, the grain being separated from the chaff, there might remain a residue of useful matter worthy of presentation to the world. The few scientific instruments I carried with me, with a limited knowledge of their proper uses, have enabled the experts of the Royal Geographical Society to use the detailed itineraries of my journeys in the preparation of reasonable maps of a country hitherto in great part conventionally charted on the basis of second-hand information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wanderer in Arabia, or Western Footsteps in Eastern Tracks, Vol. 2 of 2 The day for leaving the 'cambria' the Sitt's bright home upon the Nile, arrived; and it was a day of mourning. We had become so accustomed to the boat life, its freedom and independence of forms, and so habituated to the people about us and their ways, that breaking up all this at once, and leaving them all, was like breaking up all one's. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of the Residence of Fatalla Sayeghir: Among the Wandering Arabs of the Great Desert WE were encamped in the midst of the desert which'extends from Tiberias to Nazareth, and were speaking of the Arab tribes we had met in the day, of their manners, and the connexions between them and with the great population by Whom they are surrounded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels of Ali Bey, Vol. 1 of 2: In Morocco, Tripoli, Cyprus, Egypt, Arabia, Syria, and Turkey; Between the Years 1803 and 1807 I handed it to the captain, who ordered that no one should come on shore, and went away to show my pass port to the kaid, or governor. He sent it to the Spanish consul for examination. The consul, having found it to be genuine, sent it back to me by the vice-consul, who came to our ship, with a Turk, called sid-moham med, chief of the gunners of the place, and who was sent by the governor to interrogate me again. They asked me the same questions as the captain of the port had; and, having returned me my passport, they went away to make their report to the kaid. Soon after, the captain of the port returned with an order from the kaid for my landing. I went on shore immediately, and was conducted to the kaid, leaning on two Moors, because I had received a wound in my leg, when my travelling carriage was overturned in Spain. He received me very well, and put to me again al most the same questions which I had answered already. He then ordered a house to be prepared for me, and dis. Missed me with many compliments and offers of ser vice. I made my acknowledgment to the kaid for his civilities, and left him, supported by my two assistants, who took me to a barber's shop. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oriental Zigzag, or Wanderings in Syria, Moab, Abyssinia, and Egypt Some of the streets are filthy in the extreme, and our only marvel was how the inhabitants contrived to escape the cholera. Very remarkable is the Greek quarter of the town, with its dreadful hovels sheltering its fearfully degraded population. Here one is oppressed with a peculiar faint odour, which we found no difficulty in trac ing to the environment of vast establishments of wire. Hided Maltese pigs which are maintained in spite of the Mussulman abhorrence of the unclean animal. Against the Greek element, indeed, remonstrance would be of no avail in Alexandria. The Greek is the only nation that the Egyptian dreads. Upon the most trifling provoca tion or insult from a Mahommedan, the Greek does not hesitate to fillet him at once; and the consequence is that the Arab, fully alive to his antagonist's resolute ways, carefully avoids getting into disputes with him. Notwithstanding this radical opposition of race, however, it is curious to remark that the Greeks largely employ themselves as money-lenders to the Arabs, and act as small bankers to them. With the exception of the French, they are the only people who ever get their loans repaid; and, in explanation of the success of the French in that section of commercial life, it is only necessary here to observe that the French Consulate are wont to make most extraordinary demands when pay ments of money are not faithfully observed. This book was released on 2017-05-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in the East, Including a Journey in the Holy Land, Vol. 1 The notes which I have here consented to give to the public have none of these merits. I yield them with regret; they are merely in the shape of recollections for myself, and were destined for that purpose alone. There is nothing of science, history, geography, or manners in them - the public was far from my thoughts when I wrote them - and how did I write them? Sometimes at noon, during the mid-day repose, under the shade of a palm-tree, or under the ruins of a monument in the desert more often in the evening beneath a tent, beaten by the wind and rain, by the light of a torch of resin; one day in the cell of a Maro nite convent on Lebanon another day amid the rolling of an Arab boat, or upon the deck of a brig, in the midst of the shouts of sailors, neighing of horses, interruptions and distractions of all sorts by land and sea; sometimes eight days without writing at all; at other times losing the scattered pages of an album, torn by jackals, or steeped in the brine of the sea.
