Book Methods of Environmental Impact Assessment

Download or read book Methods of Environmental Impact Assessment written by Peter Morris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-03-05 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is now firmly established as an important and often obligatory part of proposing or launching any development project. Delivering a successful EIA needs not only an understanding of the theory but also a detailed knowledge of the methods for carrying out the processes required. Peter Morris and Riki Therivel bring together the latest advice on best practice from experienced practitioners to ensure an EIA is carried out correctly. This new edition: • explains how an EIA works and how it should be carried out • demonstrates the relationship of the EIA to socio-economic, environmental and ecological systems • includes completely updated legislative and policy contexts • has added explanations of shared and integrative methods including a new chapter on EIA and sustainability. Invaluable to undergraduate and MSc students of EIA in planning, ecology, geography and environment courses, this third edition of Methods of Environmental Impact Assessment is also of great use to planners, EIA practitioners and professionals seeking to update their skills.

Book Lake and River Restoration

Download or read book Lake and River Restoration written by Gang Pan and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eutrophication has become one of the major environmental issues of global concern due to the adverse effects on water quality, public health, and ecosystem sustainability. Fundamental research on the restoration of eutrophic freshwaters, i.e., lakes and rivers, is crucial to supporting further evidence-based practical implementations. The 12 published research papers can be classified into to three major aspects of this topic, into which they provide valuable contributions. Firstly, a background investigation into the migration of nutrients and the characteristics of submerged biota will guide and assist understanding of the mechanisms of future restoration. Secondly, various restoration strategies are studied and evaluated, including control of both external and internal nutrient loading. Thirdly, an evaluation of field sites after restoration treatment is reported in order to support the selection of appropriate restoration approaches. We foresee that the papers will significantly contribute to eutrophication control, natural water sustainability, and ecological restoration.

Book Lake Restoration Handbook

Download or read book Lake Restoration Handbook written by David P. Hamilton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lakes across the globe require help. The Lake Restoration Handbook: A New Zealand Perspective addresses this need through a series of chapters that draw on recent advances in modelling and monitoring tools, citizen science and First Peoples’ roles, catchment and lake-focused restoration techniques, and policy implementation. New Zealand lakes, like lakes across the globe, are subject to multiple pressures that have increased in severity and scale as land use has intensified, invasive species have spread and global climate change becomes manifest. This books builds on the popular Lake Managers Handbook (1987), which provided guidance on undertaking investigations into, and understanding lake ecosystems in New Zealand. The Lake Restoration Handbook: A New Zealand Perspective synthesises contemporary issues related to lake restoration and rehabilitation, integrated with social science and cultural viewpoints, and complemented by authoritative topic-area summaries by renowned scientists and practitioners from across the globe. The book examines the progress of lake restoration and the new and emerging tools available to managers for predicting and effecting change. The book will be a valuable resource for natural and social scientists, policy writers, lake managers, and anyone interested in the health of lake ecosystems.

Book Progress Toward Restoring the Everglades

Download or read book Progress Toward Restoring the Everglades written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-04-28 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the first in a congressionally mandated series of biennial evaluations of the progress being made by the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), a multibillion-dollar effort to restore historical water flows to the Everglades and return the ecosystem closer to its natural state, before it was transformed by drainage and by urban and agricultural development. The Restoration plan, which was launched in 1999 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District, includes more than 40 major projects that are expected to be completed over the next three decades. The report finds that progress has been made in developing the scientific basis and management structures needed to support a massive effort to restore the Florida Everglades ecosystem. However, some important projects have been delayed due to several factors including budgetary restrictions and a project planning process that that can be stalled by unresolved scientific uncertainties. The report outlines an alternative approach that can help the initiative move forward even as it resolves remaining scientific uncertainties. The report calls for a boost in the rate of federal spending if the restoration of Everglades National Park and other projects are to be completed on schedule.

Book Phosphorus Biogeochemistry of Sub Tropical Ecosystems

Download or read book Phosphorus Biogeochemistry of Sub Tropical Ecosystems written by K. Ramesh Reddy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-04-29 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phosphorus is one of the major nutrients limiting the productivity of terrestrial, wetland and aquatic ecosystems. Over the last decade several research projects were conducted on Florida's ecosystems from state and federal agencies and private industry to address water quality issues, and to develop management practices to control nutrient loads. Phosphorus Biogeochemistry in Sub-Tropical Ecosystems is the first thorough study of the role of phosphorus in ecological health and water quality ever published. Because of its vast and extensively studied ecosystems, Florida has often served as a national laboratory on current and future trends in ecosystem management. The reader will find studies at all levels of biological organization, from the cellular to entire ecological communities. The book is a definitive study of the role and behavior of phosphorus deposition in the upland/wetland/aquatic environment. The papers presented in this book are organized in specific groups: ecological analysis and global issues, biogeochemical transformations, biogeochemical responses, transport processes, phosphorus management, and synthesis. Although Florida's ecosystems are used as a case study, the results presented have global applications.

Book The Interactions between Sediments and Water

Download or read book The Interactions between Sediments and Water written by Brian Kronvang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on sediments as a pollutant in natural freshwater and marine habitats, and as a vector for the transfer of chemicals such as nutrients and contaminants. Sediment-water research is carried out all over the world within a variety of disciplines. The selected papers cover three main topics relating to assessment and/or restoration of disturbed watersheds, sediment-water linkages in terrestrial and aquatic environments and evaluation of sediment and ecological changes in marine and freshwater habitats. Innovative research in both developed and less developed countries is included. Both fundamental research, insight into applied research and system management are covered. The volume will also appeal to readers involved in sediment geochemistry and dynamics, aquatic habitats, water quality, aquatic ecology, river morphology, restoration techniques and catchment management.
