Book excerpt: Walt Whitman (1819 – 1892) was an American poet, essayist, and journalist, considered by many as the "father of free verse" and the great poet of the American Revolution, just as Mayakovsky would be the great poet of the Russian Revolution. The innovative technique of his poems, in which the idea of totality was translated into free verse, influenced not only later American literature but all of modern lyricism, including the Portuguese poet and essayist Fernando Pessoa. In Walt Whitman; Selected Stories, the reader will find a significant and curated portion of Whitman's work and will be captivated by the immense talent and sensitivity of this great American poet.

Book excerpt: From the highly controversial Leaves of Grass, with its overt sexual imagery and delight of sensual pleasures, to the iconic Captain, oh my captain immortalised in the film Dead Poets Society, this short collection is the ideal introduction to the poetry of Walt Whitman. One of the greats, he was celebrated both during his lifetime and ever since - he is widely considered to be the father of free verse. During the American Civil War he worked in hospitals caring for the wounded, and his own funeral in 1892 was a public event. In the words of the modernist poet Ezra Pound, Walt Whitman was 'America's poet . . . he is America'.

Book Walt Whitman s Leaves of Grass

Download or read book Walt Whitman s Leaves of Grass written by Walt Whitman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-04-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As featured in AMC's Breaking Bad, given by Gale Boetticher to Walter White and discovered by Hank Schrader. "I celebrate myself, And what I assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you. I loafe and invite my soul, I lean and loafe at my ease....observing a spear of summer grass." So begins Leaves of Grass, the first great American poem and indeed, to this day, the greatest and most essentially American poem in all our national literature. The publication of Leaves of Grass in July 1855 was a landmark event in literary history. Ralph Waldo Emerson judged the book "the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom America has yet contributed." Nothing like the volume had ever appeared before. Everything about it--the unusual jacket and title page, the exuberant preface, the twelve free-flowing, untitled poems embracing every realm of experience--was new. The 1855 edition broke new ground in its relaxed style, which prefigured free verse; in its sexual candor; in its images of racial bonding and democratic togetherness; and in the intensity of its affirmation of the sanctity of the physical world. This Anniversary Edition captures the typeface, design and layout of the original edition supervised by Whitman himself. Today's readers get a sense of the "ur-text" of Leaves of Grass, the first version of this historic volume, before Whitman made many revisions of both format and style. The volume also boasts an afterword by Whitman authority David Reynolds, in which he discusses the 1855 edition in its social and cultural contexts: its background, its reception, and its contributions to literary history. There is also an appendix containing the early responses to the volume, including Emerson's letter, Whitman's three self-reviews, and the twenty other known reviews published in various newspapers and magazines. This special volume will be a must-have keepsake for fans of Whitman and lovers of American poetry.

Book Drum Taps

  • Author : Walt Whitman
  • Publisher : New York Review of Books
  • Release : 2015-04-07
  • ISBN : 1590178637

Download or read book Drum Taps written by Walt Whitman and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walt Whitman worked as a nurse in an army hospital during the Civil War and published Drum-Taps, his war poems, as the war was coming to an end. Later, the book came out in an expanded form, including “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd,” Whitman's passionate elegy for Lincoln. The most moving and enduring poetry to emerge from America’s most tragic conflict, Drum-Taps also helped to create a new, modern poetry of war, a poetry not just of patriotic exhortation but of somber witness. Drum-Taps is thus a central work not only of the Civil War but of our war-torn times. But Drum-Taps as readers know it from Leaves of Grass is different from the work of 1865. Whitman cut and reorganized the book, reducing its breadth of feeling and raw immediacy. This edition, the first to present the book in its original form since its initial publication 150 years ago, is a revelation, allowing one of Whitman’s greatest achievements to appear again in all its troubling glory.
