Every child who completes the sixth grade will know something of being accurate and business-like about his own earning, spending, and saving. Download or read book Walsh Suzzallo Arithmetics written by John Henry Walsh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walsh-Suzzallo Arithmetics, Vol. 1 These books are designed to give an elementary school child all the arithmetical power necessary to cope with the situations of common everyday life. A social survey of the usual responsibilities of men has determined omissions and additions. The methods of learning and teaching employed have been indicated by an analysis of thousands of typical arithmetical errors collected in ordinary schools. Because a standard of social efficiency has been applied throughout, it is expected that the immediate competency of the pupil leaving school will be greatly increased. Because a standard of pedagogical economy has likewise been rigidly observed, it is also expected that the pupils will develop this competency one to two years earlier. In consequence, this series has been so arranged that a child may acquire an easy and accurate command over all fundamental processes, both simple and complex, by the end of the sixth year. The seventh and eighth school years are thus left free for a study of those business institutions and practices, the understanding of which is vital to an extended use of arithmetic in practical life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walsh-Suzzallo Arithmetics, Vol. 7: By Grades In the upper grammar grades, the child comes to feel at ease in performing the fundamental processes, only to find their applications more complex than ever. Hence the pressing responsibility of the grammar grades is to teach the children to think. They must be taught to understand the important social institutions With which arithmetical processes are associated, for, without this comprehension, they cannot reason out the successive steps to be taken in solving practical problems. Hence a large part of this text is devoted to the simple social and economic applications of mathematics. Since the dominant problem in these higher grades is different from that of the lower years, it is necessary that the teacher modify the traditional spirit of mathematical teaching. The work should be formal only in the slight est degree. It would contribute greatly to effective in struction if the teacher would constantly remember that economic, as contrasted with formal, arithmetic deals chiefly With applications, and these should be kept vital to the children taught. While many arithmetical proc esses are very important to all pupils the whole country over, their applications are not. Each process has many varied uses. Every child may need to know every funda mental operation, but not every application of the same. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Every child may need to know every funda mental operation, but not every application of the same. Recent investigations show that two urgent demands are being made by practically all school superintendents (1) that fundamental processes be emphasized in the lower grades in order that early efiicienoy may result, and (2) that the social and economic applications of arithmetic be taught in the upper grades so that gram mar school children Will have an insight into the typical business practices of modern life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walsh-Suzzallo Arithmetics, Vol. 3: Business and Industrial Practice The distribution of topics through the various grades has been greatly influenced by the fact that many children leave school before they have mastered the fundamental processes in arithmetic. It has come to be recognized that essentials should be taught as soon as possible. The most important arithmetical facts and skills should come first and the least significant last. By applying these two principles to the organization of these books, it has been easy to achieve that much-desired end, the completion of the fundamentals of arithmetic in six school years.
