Book excerpt: Discovering the Gospel in Everyday Living Walmart, Jesus and You is a challenging invitation to hear Jesus speak to you personally about the importance and significance of everyday events in your life. Today, many have failed to grasp the reality that Jesus has not changed His method of teaching. In the past, His use of parables helped people understand and apply God’s truth to their own life. Today, through Scripture and your own life experiences, Jesus can do the same. Have you read the Parable of the Buzzard, the Parable of Elvis, or the Parable of Walmart? You can find them and many more as the subject matter of this book. When Scripture is laid alongside a trip to Walmart, frustration with computers, ordering a hamburger, and other everyday experiences, you will know subject matter for parables is all around us. Then as you read the true life experiences of the author and what Jesus says about these experiences, you will recognize and learn how Jesus can speak to you using every day events in your life. You will develop a greater understanding of God’s word and grow closer to the master teacher. Walmart, Jesus, and You is easy to understand but will powerfully touch your spirit. With each chapter teaching a different life principle, the book is excellent for small groups and is useful to pastors, teachers, and others in the local church. Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to assist Southern Baptist international missions efforts through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering®.

Book Jesus Jacinto and Granny s Bottom

Download or read book Jesus Jacinto and Granny s Bottom written by Brenda Duncan Johns and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was fifteen years old, I married the boy that I had fallen in love with when I was just thirteen. Gerald was the only boy I ever truly loved, and after we married, we had to leave our little "ghost town" of Jacinto and move to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to make a living. I had never been more than twenty-five miles from home until then. My parents raised me in the Methodist religion, but after moving to Kenosha, I quit church completely and went deep into sin. The nightlife in the juke joints really got a hold of me, and I was lured into a life I never thought I'd live. I found out that that kind of life only leads to despair and heartbreak, and I began to wonder if God was real. Would He help a poor sinner like me? What life had in store for me proved that God is real and that He gave his only son, Jesus, so that I could have everlasting life. On my journey to find this truth, I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly in religion. I've seen false prophets, cults, and self-loving preachers. Come walk with me on my journey. I think in the end, you will have to agree with an old Baptist preacher who once said, "I do believe that old gal is real for God!"

Book To Serve God and Wal Mart

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bethany Moreton
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2010-09-07
  • ISBN : 0674256468
  • Pages : 396 pages

Download or read book To Serve God and Wal Mart written by Bethany Moreton and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades after World War II, evangelical Christianity nourished America’s devotion to free markets, free trade, and free enterprise. The history of Wal-Mart uncovers a complex network that united Sun Belt entrepreneurs, evangelical employees, Christian business students, overseas missionaries, and free-market activists. Through the stories of people linked by the world’s largest corporation, Bethany Moreton shows how a Christian service ethos powered capitalism at home and abroad. While industrial America was built by and for the urban North, rural Southerners comprised much of the labor, management, and consumers in the postwar service sector that raised the Sun Belt to national influence. These newcomers to the economic stage put down the plough to take up the bar-code scanner without ever passing through the assembly line. Industrial culture had been urban, modernist, sometimes radical, often Catholic and Jewish, and self-consciously international. Post-industrial culture, in contrast, spoke of Jesus with a drawl and of unions with a sneer, sang about Momma and the flag, and preached salvation in this world and the next. This extraordinary biography of Wal-Mart’s world shows how a Christian pro-business movement grew from the bottom up as well as the top down, bolstering an economic vision that sanctifies corporate globalization. The author has assigned her royalties and subsidiary earnings to Interfaith Worker Justice (www.iwj.org) and its local affiliate in Athens, GA, the Economic Justice Coalition (www.econjustice.org).

Book Wal Mart The Bully of Bentonville

Download or read book Wal Mart The Bully of Bentonville written by Anthony Bianco and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2009-03-12 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest company in the world by far, Wal-Mart takes in revenues in excess of $280 billion, employs 1.4 million American workers, and controls a large share of the business done by almost every U.S. consumer-product company. More than 138 million shoppers visit one of its 5,300 stores each week. But Wal-Mart’s “everyday low prices” come at a tremendous cost to workers, suppliers, competitors, and consumers. The Bully of Bentonville exposes the zealous, secretive, small-town mentality that rules Wal-Mart and chronicles its far-reaching consequences. In a gripping, richly textured narrative, Anthony Bianco shows how Wal-Mart has driven down retail wages throughout the country, how their substandard pay and meager health-care policy and anti-union mentality have led to a large scales exploitation of workers, why their aggressive expansion inevitably puts locally owned stores out of business, and how their pricing policies have forced suppliers to outsource work and move thousands of jobs overseas. Based on interviews with Wal-Mart employees, managers, executives, competitors, suppliers, customers, and community leaders, The Bully of Bentonville brings the truths about Wal-Mart into sharp focus.

Book Sex Jesus and the Conversations the Church Forgot

Download or read book Sex Jesus and the Conversations the Church Forgot written by Mo Isom and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex. In a world overwhelmingly obsessed with it, why is the church so silent about it? While our secular culture twists, perverts, cheapens, and idolizes sex, there are gaping holes in the church's guidance of young people. The result is generations of sexually illiterate people drowning in the repercussions of overwhelming sin struggles. Enough is enough, says Mo Isom. With raw vulnerability and a bold spirit, she shares her own sexual testimony, opening up the conversation about misguided rule-following, virginity, temptation, porn, promiscuity, false sex-pectations, sex in marriage, and more and calling readers back to God's original design for sex--a way to worship and glorify him. This book is for the young person tangled up in an addiction to pornography, for the girlfriend feeling pressured to go further, for the "good girl" who followed the rules and saved herself for marriage and then was confused and disappointed, for the married couple who use sex as a bargaining tool, for every person who casually watches sex play out in TV and movies and wonders why they're dissatisfied with the real thing, and for every confused or hurting person in-between. Sex was God's idea. It's time we invited him back into the bedroom.

  • Pages : 317 pages

Download or read book Sensational Devotion written by Jill C Stevenson and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sensational Devotion examines contemporary Passion plays, biblical theme parks, Holy Land recreations, creationist museums, and megachurches in order to understand how they serve their evangelical believer-users while also shaping larger cultural and national dialogues. Jill Stevenson explores how performative media support specific theologies and core beliefs by creating sensual, live experiences for those who use them. The book explores evangelical performance across a range of media and sites, including film, television, theater, tourist attractions, museums, and places of worship. Using historical research coupled with firsthand experiences, it critically examines these spaces and events within their specific religious, cultural, and national contexts, while placing them within a long devotional tradition to suggest how they cultivate religious belief by generating vivid, sensual, affectively oriented, and individualized experiences. Stevenson’s analysis builds upon existing work on performance and cognition, as well as theories of affect, as it contributes to existing scholarship on American evangelicalism and evangelical Christian media.

Book The Wavering Knife

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian Evenson
  • Publisher : University of Alabama Press
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9781573661133
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book The Wavering Knife written by Brian Evenson and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brian Evenson's fifth story collection constructs a human landscape as unearthly as it is mundane. Replete with the brutality, primordial waste, and savage blankness familiar to readers of his earlier works, Evenson's Kafkaesque allegories entice the mind while stubbornly disordering it. In the title story an obsessive consciousness folds back on itself, creating a vertiginous m lange of Poe and Borges, both horrific and metaphysical. Here, as in "Moran's Mexico," and "Greenhouse," the solitary nature of reading and writing leads characters beyond human limits, making the act of putting words to paper a monstrous violation opening onto madness. In "White Square" the representation of humans by dimly colored shapes confirms our feeling that something lies behind these words, while seeming to mock us with the futility of seeking it. Evenson's enigmatic names-Thurm, Bein, Hatcher, Burlun-placeable landscapes, and barren rooms all combine to create a semblance of conceptual abstraction, as though the material universe had come to exist inside someone's head. Small wonder that Evenson's work has attracted so much attention among philosophers, literary critics, and other speculative intelligences, for it continuously projects a tantalizing absence, as though there were some key or code that, if only we knew it, would illuminate everything. However, the blade of discernment wavers, and we are left to our own groping interpretations.

Download or read book My Testimony written by Jewel Blackshear and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-04-24 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In My Testimony, I open my closet to give you a glimpse of some of the pitfalls, pain, and adversities that I experienced. I also share how I was victorious in overcoming adversity after I learned to take ownership for my actions. I share how I accepted my charge to make the appeal that folks stop doing wrong and calling it right. My heartfelt desire for you is that you exercise Godly wisdom to avoid some pitfalls that can cause much trauma and significant drama. The key to avoiding some of the major painful experiences is to completely trust God. He stands ready to grant us the desires of our hearts; however, we tie his hands through our willful acts of disobedience to his Word, his way, and his will. In some instances, it took me a long time to obtain wisdom because, for so long, I insisted on being stuck on stupid. For too long, I was determined to do things my way. I did not give any serious thoughts to the devastating consequences to me and to those connected to me. In My Testimony, I candidly reveal my exposure to major church hurt. There is no hurt like church hurt. But I survived it, and I want you to know that so can you. Those tests serve to make you better, not bitter! I learned that forgiveness is a matter of the heart. My experiences have given me the ability to be bold, real, transparent, and explicit in my appeal to encourage folks to abandon their evil and wicked ways. God is not mocked! The Word of God is clear in that we will reap what we sow! I share with you how I learned to allow God to come into my life and super rule, trusting him unconditionally with my life for he is my creator and he knows what is best for me. I want to encourage believers to be true followers of Christ—living a life that is pleasing and acceptable in the sight of God.

Book Super Center Savior

  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release : 2015-08-19
  • ISBN : 1490887059
  • Pages : 118 pages

Download or read book Super Center Savior written by Jeff Noble and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-08-19 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few areas of the country that have not been affected by Wal-Mart stores. In many communities, these stores serve not only as retail hubs but also as community centers. In Super Center Savior, Pastor Jeff Noble explores the similarities between the church and Wal-Mart and suggests how the church can become more influential in our lives and communities. Using stories, personal examples, and cultural events, Noble helps Christians connect their mission and identity with creative analogies to Wal-Mart. He issues a thoughtful challenge for Christians to rethink, reinvest, and repent of selfishness and nudges the western consumer to commit to a faith-filled, dynamic, and influential lifestyle. Super Center Savior shows what stores get right, what churches get wrong, and vice versa. It communicates how our world needs churches in which ministry happens 24/7 and the contagious joy that is revealed when Christians quit going to church and start being the church. When believers begin to live for Christ and others every day, and not just Sundays, our churches become as influential and important to our communities as Wal-Mart.
