They discussed gravely the error, as they held it, of the Government allowing a black man to marry a white woman, but no one said anything about the Government's toleration of the Cohabitation of white men with black women. Soon after this an incident occurred in the main town which also illustrates the distinction that is made in this matter by white men between themselves and white women. Two white prostitutes, who lived together in a small house, were reported to have failed to observe the colour line, which even in their profession is insisted upon by the whites in Africa, wherefore it was decided that these women should undergo the punishment of being tarred and feathered deemed fitting in such cases, and so thoroughly was this done that the unfortunate creatures had to run stark naked, save for the feathers plastered down their backs, to the central police station where the officer on duty took pity on them and gave them some rags to cover themselves with while they were being escorted back to their place admonishing them at the same time to behave themselves in future and not to forget to draw the colour-line where it ought to be drawn. Ten Eyck, Esq. who moved the adjournment of the Courts. Mr. Ten Eyck said - May it please your Honors - I hardly know why it is that I have been selected to perform this, one of the saddest acts of my professional life. Since the last adjournment of this Court, the head, the father, the patriarch of our little bar, if not of the bar of the Stale, has fallen. Garret D. Wall died last night, at his residence, in the city of Burlington, "full of years and of honors." His voice, so cheering in the social circle, so frank and kindly in his daily intercourse, so familiar to our halls of slate and justice, - his voice, that has so often filled this very room with eloquence and wisdom, is hushed and mute in death! His manly form, once erect and dignified, and always winning - that filled us all with joy at his approach, now lowly lies, heavy and cold and still. His sun has gone down forever! and may I not say, with it has set the sun and centre of our own afflicted brotherhood. His course has been long, and useful, and honorable. He was not perfect; no man is perfect; but he was a pure patriot, a true Jerseyman, an able statesman, a sound lawyer, and a finished gentleman. Before I came to the bar, his fame had reached its height; with Stockton and Ewing, and Griffith and Southard, and Hornblower and Frelinghuysen, and Scott and Wood and Williamson, he was esteemed amongst the "noblest of them all."
