Book excerpt: Whether on the seashore or on the trails between clumps of Haworth heather, let us walk with Anne Brontë and listen to her discussing the kind of truth that “always conveys its own moral to those who are able to receive it.” Please join us in our academic and personal celebratory reflections on “gentle” Anne’s inner “core of steel,” her strong sense of family duty, and her enduring courage. Anne was the most underrated and least understood of the famous Brontë sisters for the better part of a century after she died in May 1849. Walking with Anne Brontë adds gravitas and personality to the growing chorus of academic and other voices now honoring the youngest Brontë sibling’s inspirational life and literary legacy.

Book excerpt: As the daughter of a modest minister, Agnes Grey has low prospects in life. After her father loses most of the family’s savings, Agnes is determined to help out and takes a position as governess for a wealthy family. Being a governess turns out to be more challenging than she could have predicted as she has to manage spoiled children and petty parents, while dependent on their approval for her livelihood. Agnes Grey is the first novel by Anne Brontë, published in 1847, and today considered an everlasting classic. Like the famous Jane Eyre, by Anne’s sister Emily Brontë, it deals with the precarious position of the governess and how the young women taking on that role were treated. It is a poignant and insightful novel that explores rigid class structures and the challenges it poses to women. ANNE BRONTË [1820-1849] was an English poet and novelist. She was the youngest of the three Brontë authors, her older sisters being Emily and Charlotte. Anne died young, probably from tuberculosis, having published the novels Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, the latter hailed today as one of the first feminist novels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The British coast is where journeys begin and where journeys end, where sun rises and where sun sets.” In John Chatterton’s A Walk by the Sea, John tells the story of his journey from Land’s End to circumnavigate an island with a longer coastline than France or India with an infinite variety of landscapes, seascapes and cultures. After having always wanted to walk the coastline of Great Britain and returning to normality after the foot and mouth epidemic was declared over in 2001, John started his epic journey around Great Britain. He quickly realised that this was not just a walk, and this book is certainly not a walker’s handy guidebook to the periphery of Blake’s ‘green and pleasant land,’ but something much deeper and meaningful. For John, walking gets the most out of travel, but this was a ‘journey’ not a walk. The journey is a reflection of Britain in the first millennium of the 21st century - its events its places and its people. Walking, unlike other forms of travel, allows time for expansion of thoughts and ideas, and reflections on life and times. This journey uses Britain as a backdrop to explore philosophical, social, political, geographical and cultural issues that spring to mind on the way. Although these thoughts and ideas are physically separate from the journey, John explains how they are also a deeply intrinsic part of it too. “A Walk by the Sea is much more than a usual guidebook but, instead, is a psycho-geographical journey around the Great British coastline in thefirst decade of the new millennium,” comments John.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CHAPTER I The Leeds and Skipton railway runs along a deep valley of the Aire; a slow and sluggish stream, compared to the neighbouring river of Wharfe. Keighley station is on this line of railway, about a quarter of a mile from the town of the same name. The number of inhabitants and the importance of Keighley have been very greatly increased during the last twenty years, owing to the rapidly extended market for worsted manufactures, a branch of industry that mainly employs the factory population of this part of Yorkshire, which has Bradford for its centre and metropolis. Keighley is in process of transformation from a populous, old-fashioned village, into a still more populous and flourishing town. It is evident to the stranger, that as the gable-ended houses, which obtrude themselves corner-wise on the widening street, fall vacant, they are pulled down to allow of greater space for traffic, and a more modern style of architecture. The quaint and narrow shop-windows of fifty years ago, are giving way to large panes and plate-glass. Nearly every dwelling seems devoted to some branch of commerce. In passing hastily through the town, one hardly perceives where the necessary lawyer and doctor can live, so little appearance is there of any dwellings of the professional middle-class, such as abound in our old cathedral towns.

Book The Tenant of Wildfell Hall

Download or read book The Tenant of Wildfell Hall written by Bronte A. and published by Рипол Классик. This book was released on 1926 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne Bronte was an English novelist and poet, the youngest member of the Bronte literary family. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is her the second and final novel. It was first published in 1848 under the pseudonym Acton Bell. Probably the most shocking of the Brontes' novels, it had an instant and phenomenal success, but after Anne's death her sister Charlotte prevented its re-publication. The novel is framed as a series of letters from Gilbert Markham to his friend and brother-in-law about the events connected with the meeting of his wife. He is deeply intrigued by Helen Graham, a beautiful and secretive young widow who has moved into nearby Wildfell Hall with her young son. He is quick to offer Helen his friendship, but when her reclusive behavior becomes the subject of local gossip and speculation, Gilbert begins to wonder whether his trust in her has been misplaced.
