Book excerpt: From death back to life, in the darkness, the consumption of her life was inevitable through thoughts of despair, fear, lost opportunities, neglect, and pure anguish. Who knew that despite her addictions, her lack of faith, and fear of love, and ultimately an almost fatal car accident, God would save her from the pit and bring her back to life into one with purpose and divine interpretation? Documenting the hardest years of her life, under the fire of trials and tribulations, her story reveals nothing less than a miracle. From death back to life, she reveals hope through faith and through her metaphorical stroke of poetry and descriptive essays, that love can and will be your world in Jesus Christ.

Book excerpt: What Does It Mean to Be in the World but Not of It? The Answer May Surprise You. Christ-followers are supposed to be the most liberated people ever to walk the face of the earth—with a message powerful enough to cause the dead to rise and the blind to see. We’re supposed to have God living inside of us. We’re supposed to know how to be in the world but not of it. Does that describe your life? Author Kary Oberbrunner suspects the answer is no, but not because you aren’t passionate about Christ. Rather, it’s because the church has been ripped apart and reassembled into two main camps that, at best, casually tolerate each other. The first camp separates itself from people, society, and culture for the main purpose of remaining unstained by the world. While the second camp conforms itself to the ideals, philosophies, and goals of the world in an attempt to be all things to all people. So what’s the alternative? A growing number of people believe in a different way and a different world. They are transformists. And they have the power to change the world. Care to join them?

Book excerpt: At once joyous and somber, this thoughtful gathering of new and selected essays spans Kathleen Dean Moore's distinguished career as a tireless advocate for environmental activism in the face of climate change. In this meditation on the music of the natural world, Moore celebrates the call of loons, howl of wolves, bellow of whales, laughter of children, and shriek of frogs, even as she warns of the threats against them. Each group of essays moves, as Moore herself has been moved, from celebration to lamentation to bewilderment and finally to the determination to act in defense of wild songs and the creatures who sing them. Music is the shivering urgency and exuberance of life ongoing. In a time of terrible silencing, Moore asks, who will forgive us if we do not save nature's songs?

I tease my kids, “If this works it will be a miracle”. That is exactly what happened. A miracle was born on an old central valley California ranch. This is a true story of great moments with big challenges. If it all sounds like a fantasy or just pure luck I would encourage you to read my story. Maybe you will recognize yourself inside my journey. The Entrepreneur.

Book Truth v Justice

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert I. Rotberg
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2010-07-01
  • ISBN : 1400832039
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Truth v Justice written by Robert I. Rotberg and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truth commission is an increasingly common fixture of newly democratic states with repressive or strife-ridden pasts. From South Africa to Haiti, truth commissions are at work with varying degrees of support and success. To many, they are the best--or only--way to achieve a full accounting of crimes committed against fellow citizens and to prevent future conflict. Others question whether a restorative justice that sets the guilty free, that cleanses society by words alone, can deter future abuses and allow victims and their families to heal. Here, leading philosophers, lawyers, social scientists, and activists representing several perspectives look at the process of truth commissioning in general and in post-apartheid South Africa. They ask whether the truth commission, as a method of seeking justice after conflict, is fair, moral, and effective in bringing about reconciliation. The authors weigh the virtues and failings of truth commissions, especially the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, in their attempt to provide restorative rather than retributive justice. They examine, among other issues, the use of reparations as social policy and the granting of amnesty in exchange for testimony. Most of the contributors praise South Africa's decision to trade due process for the kinds of truth that permit closure. But they are skeptical that such revelations produce reconciliation, particularly in societies that remain divided after a compromise peace with no single victor, as in El Salvador. Ultimately, though, they find the truth commission to be a worthy if imperfect instrument for societies seeking to say "never again" with confidence. At a time when truth commissions have been proposed for Bosnia, Kosovo, Cyprus, East Timor, Cambodia, Nigeria, Palestine, and elsewhere, the authors' conclusion that restorative justice provides positive gains could not be more important. In addition to the editors, the contributors are Amy Gutmann, Rajeev Bhargava, Elizabeth Kiss, David A. Crocker, André du Toit, Alex Boraine, Dumisa Ntsebeza, Lisa Kois, Ronald C. Slye, Kent Greenawalt, Sanford Levinson, Martha Minow, Charles S. Maier, Charles Villa-Vicencio, and Wilhelm Verwoerd.

Book Curatopia

  • Author : Philipp Schorch
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2018-11-30
  • ISBN : 1526118211
  • Pages : 534 pages

Download or read book Curatopia written by Philipp Schorch and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the future of curatorship? Is there a vision for an ideal model, a curatopia, whether in the form of a utopia or dystopia? Or is there a plurality of approaches, amounting to a curatorial heterotopia? This pioneering volume addresses these questions by considering the current state of curatorship. It reviews the different models and approaches operating in museums, galleries and cultural organisations around the world and discusses emerging concerns, challenges and opportunities. The collection explores the ways in which the mutual, asymmetrical relations underpinning global, scientific entanglements of the past can be transformed into more reciprocal, symmetrical forms of cross-cultural curatorship in the present, arguing that this is the most effective way for curatorial practice to remain meaningful. International in scope, the volume covers three regions: Europe, North America and the Pacific.

Book excerpt: “It rained cats and dogs”, “I know where his shoe pinches”, “Yes, it was really a blessing in disguise”… These idioms are often used in common language in our day to day talk or even correspondence. Their usage makes the communication and message to be conveyed quite effective. Dictionary defines idiom as “a group of words whose meaning is different from the meaning of the individual words.” Idiom is a combination of words with figurative meanings. It often creates a picturesque image and that image conveys the meaning. For e.g. ‘where the shoe pinches’ the image automatically creates the image of pain and trouble and the place where there is trouble. Similarly, ‘add fuel to the fire’—it creates the image of fire blazing more and the meaning of aggravation comes out. The following example is widely employed to illustrate the point. Book Healing at the Borderland of Medicine and Religion

Download or read book Healing at the Borderland of Medicine and Religion written by Michael H. Cohen and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2007-09-06 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the transformations facing health care in the twenty-first century is the safe, effective, and appropriate integration of conventional, or biomedical, care with complementary and alternative medical (CAM) therapies, such as acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy, herbal medicine, and spiritual healing. In Healing at the Borderland of Medicine and Religion, Michael H. Cohen discusses the need for establishing rules and standards to facilitate appropriate integration of conventional and CAM therapies. The kind of integrated health care many patients seek dwells in a borderland between the physical and the spiritual, between the quantifiable and the immeasurable, Cohen observes. But the present environment fails to present clear rules for clinicians regarding which therapies to recommend, accept, or discourage, and how to discuss patient requests regarding inclusion of such therapies. Focusing on the social, intellectual, and spiritual dimensions of integrative care and grounding his analysis in the attendant legal, regulatory, and institutional changes, Cohen provides a multidisciplinary examination of the shift to a more fluid, pluralistic health care environment.
