Book excerpt: When first published in 2004, Danger on Peaks was the poet's first new collection of poems in twenty years. Perhaps his most personal, autobiographical collection, it begins with the young poet ascending Mt. St. Helens in 1945, a climb accidentally timed with the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He was 15 years old. Almost sixty years later, after the great Buddhas at Bamiyan Valley were bombed and with the victims of the World Trade Center also "turned to dust," the poet composed a prayer while at Short Grass Temple in Senso–ji, a pilgrim on the path of Kannon, Goddess of Mercy. This remarkable collection was greeted with broad praise, and as Julia Martin proclaimed, "Moving between relative and absolute ways of seeing, [Snyder] responds to the experience of global conflict and personal pain by reminding readers of the continuity of wildness, affirming the value of art, and invoking an ancient practice of wisdom and compassion."

Book excerpt: A good fictional Christian book is hard to come by. A doctrinally sound, and biblically correct fictional Christian book that gives the full plan of salvation, and challenges believers on apologetics and evangelism is even harder to come by. This book has all of that. The Lord burdened my heart to write a story that will not only create a tool Christians can use to strengthen their faith and grow their understanding but also entertain by way of a genuinely good fictional narrative. We need good books. We need good books in our Christian homes. We need good books in our churches. We need good books in our teen groups. We need good books. This is a good book. When I started writing this book, it was just a hobby, but as it progressed I realized God was taking my hobby and turning it into a way to minister to people. I wasn’t looking to get published by anyone, get my name out there, or make a ton of money. I wasn’t even sure if anyone was going to read it, but as I felt that God was directing my path, I knew that I needed to follow. There are a lot of things I want this project to accomplish, but first and foremost, my prayer is that this book will bring glory to the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.

Book Singing in the Valley

Download or read book Singing in the Valley written by Pat Lennon and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Down in the valley of caring for my husband with Alzheimer's, the Lord comforted and encouraged me with thoughts that He helped me put into poems. God used poetry as my therapy. Each rhyme was such a blessing to me at the time that I want to share them in hopes they will be a blessing to others. We all have valleys of one kind or another, but God has a song for us in every one. This book contains some of the songs God gave me. Pat Lennon is the widow of Horace Lennon, a highly decorated World War II veteran. Upon moving to Taylors, SC, near their six children, she opened Grandmama's Day Care and cared for seven of their fourteen grandchildren. She has written poetry all her life, but two seemingly unrelated events lie behind the books she has authored. Those events were her husband's diagnosis with Alzheimer's and her learning how to use the computer. The poems are an extension of her worship of God and a God-given release from despondency. Physically active most of her life, she is now in a new season--advanced Osteoarthritis. Her books are a reminder that God often uses His people in different ways at different times of their lives. Her favorite hymn, Great Is Thy Faithfulness by Thomas Chisholm and William Runyan, is her testimony.

When God says, “Wait,” we can control only two things: how we wait, and who we become along the way. Author Elizabeth Laing Thompson invites you to walk alongside people of the Bible who had to wait on God. . .imperfect heroes like David, Miriam, Naomi, Sarah, Joseph, and others. Their stories will provide a roadmap for your own story, helping you navigate the painful, lonely territory of waiting, coming out on the other side with your faith, relationships, and sense of humor intact. Book excerpt: In 1999, Karyn Schad became the two hundreth woman in the world to be diagnosed with Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), a rare disease that mainly affects women of childbearing age. Muscle-like cells grew out of control in her lungs, stealing her breath away. She lived with the disease until finally receiving the gift of life, her new lungs on May 17, 2009, delivering her from the foggy line where life rubs shoulders with death. On their wedding day forty years before, neither Karyn nor Richard could possibly have foreseen the tremendous trial in their future. Together, they found the courage to brave LAM, and are truly grateful for the wisdom they've gained. In this memoir, Richard shares their story, combining his recollection of events with Karyn's diary entries. He considers the joy they have now and the lessons they have learned from the experience--how it opened their eyes to the beauty surrounding them. Although the disease exploded in Karyn's body, it never touched her heart, and that's where hope lives.
