He served 18 months as a curate of St. Andrews Church, Grimsey, Canada, returning to Georgia in 1868, where he served as Rector of St. John's Church in Savannah until 1876, when he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he served as Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was killed in an elevator accident in 1891 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
