Book Tom Cruise

Download or read book Tom Cruise written by Ruth O'Donnell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Cruise is a Hollywood superstar like no other. World famous since his debut in the 1980s, he remains among the highest paid actors. Why has his persona resonated so powerfully with millions of viewers? Using psychoanalytic theory, "Tom Cruise: Performing Masculinity in Post Vietnam Hollywood" demonstrates how his star persona sublimates anxieties about masculinity. Amid Reagan-era military jingoism and concern over declining industrial labour, he represented a new model of American masculinity based on white-collar upward mobility. Spanning blockbuster films such as Risky Business (1983), Jerry Maguire (1996) and the Mission: Impossible series (1996 - 2011), this book illustrates how his characters exemplify entrepreneurialism, charisma, technological gadgetry and verbal acuity to redefine male success. His newly emotive type - 'help me help you' - also successfully overcomes interpersonal conflicts with patriarchal authority and senior women in the workplace, and navigates race relations. The first scholarly study of Tom Cruise's celebrity, this book surveys his entire career and builds on Richard Dyer's 'star theory.' It develops the core dynamic of his star persona, a mix of projected character traits and 'real life' trivia or gossip, and establishes that his box office success reflects his persona's ability to work through the psychodynamic preoccupations of his films. This exceptional appeal evolved, at times characterised by complicity with 1980s materialistic hedonism (Taps, 1981), male spectacle (Magnolia, 1999), or his use of martial technology (War of the Worlds, 2005), and their attendant psychic meanings. Recent shifts in American culture, however, in tandem with Tom Cruise's growing evangelism for the Church of Scientology, may be threatening his appeal. Ultimately, this book offers a picture of how stars reflect the values and crises of their societies, and fills a substantial gap in scholarship on celebrity studies, critical cultural analysis, masculinity studies, and film theory.

Book Dynamic Secularization

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Sims Bainbridge
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2017-05-11
  • ISBN : 3319565028
  • Pages : 268 pages

Download or read book Dynamic Secularization written by William Sims Bainbridge and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses secularization, arguing that it may be more complex and significant than is generally recognized. Using a number of online exploration methods, the author provides insights into how religion may be changing, and how information technology might be energized in this process. Working from the premise that the relationship between science and religion is complex, the author demonstrates that while science has contradicted some specific religious beliefs, science itself may have been facilitated by beliefs formed many centuries ago. Science assists engineers in the development of powerful new technologies, and asserts that the universe is based on a set of fundamental principles that can be understood by humans through the assistance of mathematics. The challenging ideas discussed will benefit readers through sharing a variety of Internet-based research methods and cultural discoveries. The book provides a balance between quantitative methods, illustrated by 24 tables of statistics, and qualitative methods, illustrated by 30 screenshots of computer-generated virtual worlds. Analysis interweaves with description, creating a sense of involvement in the experience of exploring online realities at the same time as radical insights are shared.

It led me up a blind alley and now there’s no signal... Cleaning Up in the Valkyrie Suite follows the journey of protagonist, Prudence Baxter, who loses her long-standing job as a P.A, in the wake of the 2008 banking crisis. Hitting a brick wall, how will she manage when her life takes a dramatic turn, leaving Prudence feeling lost and alone? If you’re single, 55 and unemployed you’re a nobody, right? Taking on this new persona, Prudence believes there is only one way to go: watching daytime T.V. in her pyjamas, sifting through the items in the close-to-sell-by-date tubs in the supermarkets and resisting the offers of pay-day loan sharks. Life has become grim. Making matters worse, she learns she might even be forced to sell her family home. Everything seems to be out of control... After searching relentlessly for work, Prudence eventually finds a new job, a role her previous self would have turned her delicate nose up at! She begins work as a chamber maid in a newly opened hotel. Dressed in her unflattering uniform, she feels her self-esteem and social status have disappeared off the scale. What’s more, her salary will leave no margin to set aside for all those little disasters that life frequently throws at her and expects her to pay for. However, during her time cleaning the Valkyrie Suite, she begins to suspect that the new hotel, and its T.V. personality owner, are not really what they seem to be... Although her natural nosy self draws her into an investigation and suddenly her daily cleaning round is interrupted by bizarre encounters, threats and even personal danger, Prudence finally has the chance to realise one of her long-held dreams...

Book Being Wagner

Download or read book Being Wagner written by Simon Callow and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simon Callow, the celebrated author of Orson Welles, delivers a dazzling, swift, and accessible biography of the musical titan Richard Wagner and his profoundly problematic legacy--a fresh take for seasoned acolytes and the perfect introduction for new fans. Richard Wagner's music dramas have never been more popular or more divisive. His ten masterpieces, created against the backdrop of a continent in severe political and cultural upheaval, constitute an unmatched body of work. A man who spent most of his life in abject poverty, inspiring both critical derision and hysterical hero-worship, Wagner was a walking contradiction: belligerent, flirtatious, disciplined, capricious, demanding, visionary, and poisonously anti-Semitic. Acclaimed biographer Simon Callow evokes the intellectual and artistic climate in which Wagner lived and takes us through his most iconic works, from his pivotal successes in The Flying Dutchman and Lohengrin, to the musical paradigm shift contained in Tristan and Isolde, to the apogee of his achievements in The Ring of the Nibelung and Parsifal, which debuted at Bayreuth shortly before his death. Being Wagner brings to life this towering figure, creator of the most sublime and most controversial body of work ever known.

Book William Alwyn

Download or read book William Alwyn written by Ian Johnson and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ian Johnson's evaluation of Alwyn's film music places his achievement in the context of wider movements within the film industry. William Alwyn was a leading composer of British film music in the 1940s and '50s, a time when the British film industry was at its peak. His scores ranged from documentaries to almost 80 full-length feature films, including classics such as Fires were Started, Desert Victory, Odd Man Out, The Fallen Idol, and The History of Mr Polly; he was adept at any musical genre, from classical to cartoon slapstick, and in the process worked with legendary directors, including Carol Reed, David Lean, Humphrey Jennings, and Anthony Asquith. Alone with Vaughan Williams he was granted the distinction of a separate title credit; columnists mentioned him alongside Bliss, Bax and Walton. However, as the reputation of the British film industry declined in the 1950s, so musical snobbery against those who were its leading lights became unpleasantly raw. In recent years, however, with sensitive performances of hisfilm and concert music available on CD, this most appealing of composers has enjoyed something of a renaissance. In this long overdue reassessment, Alwyn's films are analysed and put into the context of his biography, the film industry, and of society at large: the author shows in particular this remarkably versatile composer developed a hitherto unrecognised grammar of film music which enhanced every film on which he worked. He also examines his work for war propaganda, radio, and the concert hall. The volume is enhanced by the most complete filmography, discography, and bibliography of the composer's works yet published, as well as listings of his concert and radio music.
