Book The NUM and British Politics

Download or read book The NUM and British Politics written by Andrew Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its formation in 1944, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) was one of the most powerful and important players on the British political and industrial stage. Whilst the nation relied upon coal for its electricity production, domestic heating and railway transportation, the miners and their unions would always play a central role in national politics with the ability to cause massive disruption to the nation, should they decide to strike, as they did in 1972 and 1974. However, as the country began to move towards other forms of energy, such as oil and gas, the power of the mineworkers correspondingly decreased, leaving the once mighty union to come to terms with a very different world by the early eighties. The NUM and British Politics makes use of union material and party and government archives as well as oral testimony, much of it highly confidential, to present the first overall account of the evolving nature of the tripartite relationship between the miners, the NUM and the state.

Book The Shadow of the Mine

Download or read book The Shadow of the Mine written by Huw Beynon and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one personified the age of industry more than the miners. The Shadow of the Mine tells the story of King Coal in its heyday – and what happened to mining communities after the last pits closed. The Shadow of the Mine tells the story of King Coal in its heyday, the heroics and betrayals of the Miners’ Strike, and what happened to mining communities after the last pits closed. No one personified the age of industry more than the miners. Coal was central to the British economy, powering its factories and railways. It carried political weight, too. In the eighties the miners risked everything in a year-long strike against Thatcher’s shutdowns. Their defeat doomed a way of life. The lingering sense of abandonment in former mining communities would be difficult to overstate. Yet recent electoral politics has revolved around the coalfield constituencies in Labour’s Red Wall. Huw Beynon and Ray Hudson draw on decades of research to chronicle these momentous changes through the words of the people who lived through them. This edition includes a new postscript on why Thatcher’s war on the miners wasn’t good for green politics. ‘Excellent’ NEW STATESMAN ‘Brilliant’ TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT ‘Enlightening’ GUARDIAN

Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed assessment of the current UK energy situation, future needs and energy policies. Past policies have often taken too little account of uncertainty, and have therefore quickly become outdated. The book concludes that the need for a positive energy policy is increasingly urgent. The book is in three parts. The first part sets the UK in the world energy context, reviews the history of UK energy policy and institutions, and describes the current pattern of fuel use. The second part contains detailed analysis and discussion of UK energy demand and supply. The third part of the book reviews policies for energy conservation and discusses the overall energy prospects for the UK. The concluding chapter examines energy policy objectives, relating them to the problems and issues identified in the book. The authors are amongst the leading authorities on UK energy, and are co-authors of Energy Economics (also published by Cambridge University Press).

Download or read book Strikes and Solidarity written by Roy A. Church and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-09 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important contribution to the study of industrial relations, Roy Church and Quentin Outram present research into the strike activity of British coalminers from the late nineteenth century to the mid-1960s. The authors consider not only the major national strikes and lock-outs which made the industry a byword for industrial militancy, but also the multitude of small-scale strikes which formed a routine part of British colliery lifes. Strikes and Solidarity, first published in 1998, is multi-disciplinary in approach and views coalfield conflict from the perspectives offered by sociologists, industrial relations specialists, and economists, as well as social and economic historians. Church and Outram have successfully blended quantitative and qualitative investigations to explain the long-standing issues presented by industrial relations in the coalfields.
