Book The Structure of Wages

Download or read book The Structure of Wages written by Edward P. Lazear and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution of income, the rate of pay raises, and the mobility of employees is crucial to understanding labor economics. Although research abounds on the distribution of wages across individuals in the economy, wage differentials within firms remain a mystery to economists. The first effort to examine linked employer-employee data across countries, The Structure of Wages:An International Comparison analyzes labor trends and their institutional background in the United States and eight European countries. A distinguished team of contributors reveal how a rising wage variance rewards star employees at a higher rate than ever before, how talent becomes concentrated in a few firms over time, and how outside market conditions affect wages in the twenty-first century. From a comparative perspective that examines wage and income differences within and between countries such as Denmark, Italy, and the Netherlands, this volume will be required reading for economists and those working in industrial organization.

Book The Role of Firms in Wage Inequality Policy Lessons from a Large Scale Cross Country Study

Download or read book The Role of Firms in Wage Inequality Policy Lessons from a Large Scale Cross Country Study written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-09 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though firms play a key role in shaping wages, wage inequality and the gender wage gap, firms have so far only featured to a limited extent in the policy debates around these issues. The evidence in this volume shows that around one third of overall wage inequality can be explained by gaps in pay between firms rather than differences in the level and returns to workers’ skills.

Book Corporatism Or Competition

Download or read book Corporatism Or Competition written by Coen Teulings and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-17 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present important research showing that corporatist institutions generate smaller non-competitive wage differentials than a decentralized system. A theoretical explanation is developed based on the hold-up problem in investments, arguing that corporatist institutions solve the problem by specifying ex ante nominal contracts that remove the necessity of ex post bargaining over the surplus of an employment relationship. The authors also argue that such institutions allow sufficient flexibility to accommodate aggregate shocks, even more so than decentralized systems. Corporatism or Competition? is the first book to bring together the mass of research on comparative wage differences, wage movements and employment behaviour in different countries with different institutional frameworks, in an organized and coherent fashion.

Book Differences and Changes in Wage Structures

Download or read book Differences and Changes in Wage Structures written by Richard B. Freeman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades, wages of skilled workers in the United States rose while those of unskilled workers fell; less-educated young men in particular have suffered unprecedented losses in real earnings. These twelve original essays explore whether this trend is unique to the United States or is part of a general growth in inequality in advanced countries. Focusing on labor market institutions and the supply and demand forces that affect wages, the papers compare patterns of earnings inequality and pay differentials in the United States, Australia, Korea, Japan, Western Europe, and the changing economies of Eastern Europe. Cross-country studies examine issues such as managerial compensation, gender differences in earnings, and the relationship of pay to regional unemployment. From this rich store of data, the contributors attribute changes in relative wages and unemployment among countries both to differences in labor market institutions and training and education systems, and to long-term shifts in supply and demand for skilled workers. These shifts are driven in part by skill-biased technological change and the growing internationalization of advanced industrial economies.

Book The Global Wage System

Download or read book The Global Wage System written by Gernot Kohler and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International wage differences are important at a time of globalisation; their social and economic consequences are vast, if not devastating. It is astonishing, therefore, that the origins, causes, and determinants of international wage differences are hardly ever discussed. According to a widely held half-truth, international wage differences reflect international productivity differences. This study challenges that belief and shows that international wage differences are due to a mixture of discrimination and various economic factors, just like wage differences between the sexes. The approach of this study is influenced by two strands of socio-economic analysis, namely, by world-system analysis and by the feminist. critique of gender wage differences. The central theme is discrimination versus productivity. Are international wage differences due to productivity differences or are they due to discrimination? The following issues are examined: Data on international wage differences; long-term changes of national wage rates; wage differences due to gender, race, ethnicity, culture, and region; the relationship between wages and GDP per capita; and more.
