Book excerpt: Few figures have had an impact as important on our understanding of artistic production after the turn of the millennium as Wade Guyton, whose practice has widely prompted reconsiderations of longstanding models of medium-specificity, appropriation, and critical engagement--and, perhaps more provocatively, performativity and readymade gesture--in art. This volume takes stock of critical perspectives on Guyton's work over the course of the artist's career, assembling both expansive, scholarly essays and more concise, journalistic assessments by an international array of authors including Daniel Baumann, Kirsty Bell, Bettina Funcke, Tim Griffin (editor), and John Kelsey.Just as significantly, this book holds up a mirror to the rapidly changing context for Guyton's work, which in a few short years shifted from discussions of the widespread use of modernist motifs in art during the early 2000s to others revolving around the artwork, anticipating its continuous circulation as digital media became ubiquitous in art and culture alike.Published with the Kunsthalle Zrich. This book is part of the JRP Ringier Documents series.

  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Seeing Slowly written by Michael Findlay and published by Prestel Verlag. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to viewing art, living in the information age is not necessarily a benefit. So argues Michael Findlay in this book that encourages a new way of looking at art. Much of this thinking involves stripping away what we have been taught and instead trusting our own instincts, opinions, and reactions. Including reproductions of works by Mark Rothko, Paul Klee, Joan Miró, Jacob Lawrence, and other modern and contemporary masters, this book takes readers on a journey through modern art. Chapters such as “What Is a Work of Art?”, “Can We Look and See at the Same Time?”, and “Real Connoisseurs Are Not Snobs,” not only give readers the confidence to form their own opinions, but also encourages them to make connections that spark curiosity, intellect, and imagination. “The most important thing for us to grasp,” writes Findlay, “is that the essence of a great work of art is inert until it is seen. Our engagement with the work of art liberates its essence.” After reading this book, even the most intimidated art viewer will enter a museum or gallery feeling more confident and leave it feeling enriched and inspired.

Book Strategic Vandalism The Legacy of Asger Jorn s Modification Paintings

Download or read book Strategic Vandalism The Legacy of Asger Jorn s Modification Paintings written by Axel Heil and published by Petzel Gallery. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive catalogue of the exhibition Strategic Vandalism: The Legacy of Asger Jorn’s Modifications Paintings on view at Petzel Gallery in New York from March 5th to April 13th, 2019. With texts written and edited by the curators as well as reprinted articles on the subjects of détournement, vandalism, and the relationship between modifications and appropriation art in the late 1970s. If you have old paintings, do not despair. Retain your memories but detourn them so that they correspond with your era. Why reject the old, if one can modernize it? —Asger Jorn Published on the occasion of the exhibition Strategic Vandalism: The Legacy of Asger Jorn’s Modifications Paintings at Petzel Gallery in New York (March 5 – April 13, 2019) – this historical group show of over 30 prominent international artists investigates multifarious appropriation methods situated in the context of the first thrift store paintings altered by Danish artist Asger Jorn. Spanning from the mid-1960s to the flourishing techniques of the 1980s, up to the present day. In Paris, 1959, Asger Jorn exhibits a group of paintings at the prominent Galerie Rive Gauche. Not only has he re-worked these found paintings with his own brush, modifying their respective surfaces, but he also writes a text describing his technique as a recovery of certain iconographic archetypes. Instead of making a mockery of these kitsch paintings, he articulates some of their inherent folk-art values. The exhibition is not well received. However, it has since become legendary. Jorn’s modifications have long been a neglected chapter in the Danish artist’s biography. Yet from today’s perspective these high/low hermaphrodites are recognized by keen-eyed viewers as mirrors reflecting the historicity of modern painting. Such “Modifications” are a painterly version of “détournement,” a Situationist technique, described in 1956 by Guy Debord and Gil Wolman as the systematic revaluation of “prefabricated aesthetic products.” For Jorn, who co-founded and financially supported the Situationist International, the 1959 Galerie Rive Gauche exhibition, showcased his implementation of a fundamental aesthetic critique in which he appropriates a relatively discredited artistic source as “his” own material, then applies his iconography, and his language to that particular prefabricated model. Strategic Vandalism: The Legacy of Asger Jorn’s Modification Paintings features works by Enrico Baj, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Vidya Gastaldon, Wade Guyton/Stephen Prina, Rachel Harrison, Ray Johnson, Jacqueline de Jong, Asger Jorn, Mike Kelley, Martin Kippenberger, Per Kirkeby, Lee Krasner, Albert Oehlen, Francis Picabia, Stephen Prina, R.H. Quaytman, Arnulf Rainer, Julian Schnabel, Jim Shaw, Gedi Sibony, Alexis Smith, Daniel Spoerri, John Stezaker, Betty Tompkins, and David Wojnarowicz.

Book excerpt: Founded in 2004, Guyton\Walker--the artist duo of Wade Guyton (born 1972) and Kelley Walker (born 1969)--is a partnership that has remained virtually without parallel in contemporary art, in that both artists work and exhibit individually. This volume examines all facets of their output, both singly and together. Essays by Sam Pulitzer and Quinn Latimer discuss individual authorship and joint techniques, while Jack Bankowsky's text examines Guyton\Walker within a broad art-historical context. Yilmaz Dziewior's introductory essay outlines the distinctive concept of the Kunsthaus Bregenz exhibition this book accompanies, and addresses the relationship between individual and joint artistic practices. Each section on the three artistic positions features photographs of the installation in Kunsthaus Bregenz.

Book Painting at the Edge of the World

Download or read book Painting at the Edge of the World written by Douglas Fogle and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What becomes clear is that painting's traditional function as a window on the world has been circumvented, or rather that someone has left the window open and a number of things have crawled in. As Yve-Alain Bois so eloquently paraphrases Robert Musil: "If some painting is still to come, if painters are still to come, they will not come from where we expect them to." Painting at the Edge of the World looks beyond our expectations and provides a broad context for understanding painterly practice today."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Reinventing Abstraction

    Book Details:
  • Author : Raphael Rubinstein
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 9780985141080
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Reinventing Abstraction written by Raphael Rubinstein and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinventing Abstractionlooks at 15 painters born between 1939 and 1949: Carroll Dunham, Louise Fishman, Mary Heilmann, Bill Jensen, Jonathan Lasker, Stephen Mueller, Elizabeth Murray, Thomas Nozkowski, David Reed, Joan Snyder, Pat Steir, Gary Stephan, Stanley Whitney, Jack Whitten and Terry Winters. Challenging official accounts of the decade, which tend to ignore the individualistic abstraction exemplified by these painters in favor of more easily identifiable movements and styles, Rubinstein chronicles how, around 1980, a generation of New York painters embraced elements that had been largely excluded from the radical, deconstructive abstraction of the late 1960s and 1970s, which had influenced many of them. In a long, informative essay titled "The Lure of the Impure," Rubinstein seeks to uncover the "street history" of painting, and redress past, sometimes race-based exclusions. Although many of the artists in Reinventing Abstractionare well known, their collective history has not yet been addressed by art history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking Through Painting' is an on-going investigation of contemporary painting since 2009 involving numerous discussions and studio visits. The book was initiated after a discussion between Swedish artist Jan Rydén and curator Jonatan Habib Engqvist about how the contemporary institutional and theoretical art scene often seems to be uneasy, and at times even lost in its relationship to painting. Together with the artists Kristina Bength and Sigrid Sandström, they embarked on a project that would investigate painting as a way of thinking with a group composed of a curator/philosopher and three theoretically minded painters who all have different points of departure and dissimilar painting practices. Taking the artist's perspective as a point of departure, the book collects over 400 pages of commissioned texts and transcribed conversations between artists, theorists, curators and critics active in Stockholm, Oslo and New York.

Book Matisse s Garden

Download or read book Matisse s Garden written by Samantha Friedman and published by Museum of Modern Art. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One day, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) cut a small bird out of a piece of white paper. It was a simple shape, but he liked the way it looked and didn't want to throw it away, so he pinned it to the wall of his room. But the bird looked lonely all by itself, so he cut out more shapes to join it, and before he knew it, he had transformed his walls into larger-than-life gardens filled with brightly coloured plants and animals and shapes of all sizes. Featuring colourful cut-paper illustrations and Matisse's own cut-outs, Matisse's Garden is the inspiring story of how the artist's never-ending curiosity and continuous process of trying new things helped turn a small experiment into a radical new form of art. Children will see how Matisse used nothing but paper and scissors to create simple shapes like squares, leaves and birds, and experimented with scraps of leftover paper and new colour combinations to create lush gardens on his studio walls.
