Download or read book Investigating the Origin of the Asteroids and Early Findings on Vesta written by Clifford J. Cunningham and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the origin of asteroids by analyzing the discovery of Vesta in 1807. Wilhelm Olbers, who discovered Vesta, suggested that the asteroids were the result of a primordial planet’s explosion. Cunningham studies that idea in detail through the writings of Sir David Brewster in Scotland, the era's most prolific writer about the asteroids. He also examines the link between meteorites and asteroids, revealing a synergy between Ernst Chladni, Romantic symbolism, and the music of the spheres. Vesta was a lightning rod for controversy throughout the nineteenth century with observers arguing over its size and color, and the astounding notion that it was self-luminous. It was also a major force for change, as new methods in the field of celestial mechanics were developed to study the orbital perturbations it is subject to. A large selection of private correspondence and scientific papers complete the first comprehensive historical study of Vesta ever published. With a synoptic look at the four asteroids, Ceres, Pallas, Juno and Vesta, Cunningham provides a valuable resource on asteroid origins and explains how they were integrated into the newly revealed solar system of the early nineteenth century.

Download or read book Serial Forms written by Clare Pettitt and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serial Forms: The Unfinished Project of Modernity, 1815-1848 proposes an entirely new way of reading the transition into the modern. It is the first book in a series of three which will take the reader up to the end of the First World War, moving from a focus on London to a global perspective. Serial Forms sets out the theoretical and historical basis for all three volumes. It suggests that, as a serial news culture and a stadial historicism developed together between 1815 and 1848, seriality became the dominant form of the nineteenth century. Through serial newsprint, illustrations, performances, and shows, the past and the contemporary moment enter into public visibility together. Serial Forms argues that it is through seriality that the social is represented as increasingly politically urgent. The insistent rhythm of the serial reorganizes time, recalibrates and rescales the social, and will prepare the way for the 1848 revolutions which are the subject of the next book. By placing their work back into the messy print and performance culture from which it originally appeared, Serial Forms is able to produce new and exciting readings of familiar authors such as Scott, Byron, Dickens, and Gaskell. Rather than offering a rarefied intellectual history or chopping up the period into 'Romantic' and 'Victorian', Clare Pettitt tracks the development of communications technologies and their impact on the ways in which time, history and virtuality are imagined.
Download or read book An Everyday Life of the English Working Class written by Carolyn Steedman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns two men, a stockingmaker and a magistrate, who both lived in a small English village at the turn of the nineteenth century. It focuses on Joseph Woolley the stockingmaker, on his way of seeing and writing the world around him, and on the activities of magistrate Sir Gervase Clifton, administering justice from his country house Clifton Hall. Using Woolley's voluminous diaries and Clifton's magistrate records, Carolyn Steedman gives us a unique and fascinating account of working-class living and loving, and getting and spending. Through Woolley and his thoughts on reading and drinking, sex, the law and social relations, she challenges traditional accounts which she argues have overstated the importance of work to the working man's understanding of himself, as a creature of time, place and society. She shows instead that, for men like Woolley, law and fiction were just as critical as work in framing everyday life.

Download or read book Index and Finding List of Serials Published in the British Isles 1789 1832 written by William S. Ward and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth of interest in the periodical literature of the past has emphasized increasingly the need for specialized hand lists, a need which the American Union List of Serials, the British Union Catalogue of the Periodical Publications in the University Libraries of the British Isles, and other existing indexes cannot answer. To satisfy one area of this need, William S. Ward has compiled a near-definitive index and finding list of periodicals and newspapers of the English Romantic period. In it are reflected the holdings of almost eleven hundred American, Canadian, and British libraries and newspaper offices. The volume is also the first to list titles and library locations of all the newspapers, magazines, and other serials published in the British Isles during the years between the French Revolution and the Great Reform Bill.
