Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Jargonaphasia covers the different forms of posterior aphasia and the relations of these pathological states to focal brain lesions. The book presents the behavior of eight patients with full-blown jargonaphasia. The text then describes the components and analysis of the neologism, the conditions under which it can appear, and its possible functions; the localization of lesions in jargonaphasia and the utilization of IS and CT localization; and the gestures and lexical processes in jargonaphasia. The aphasic jargon and the speech acts of naming and judging; the behavioral aspects of jargonaphasia; and the associative processes in semantic jargon and in schizophrenic language are also considered. The book further tackles case reports of semantic jargon; a case with phonemic jargon; and the vowel timing and linguistic organization of articulatory sequences in jargonaphasia. The text also looks into the therapy with the jargonaphasic. Psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, speech therapists, psychologists, and linguistics will find the book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Paris in 1954, a young man named André Baudry founded Arcadie, an organization for “homophiles” that would become the largest of its kind that has ever existed in France, lasting nearly thirty years. In addition to acting as the only public voice for French gays prior to the explosion of radicalism of 1968, Arcadie—with its club and review—was a social and intellectual hub, attracting support from individuals as diverse as Jean Cocteau and Michel Foucault and offering support and solidarity to thousands of isolated individuals. Yet despite its huge importance, Arcadie has largely disappeared from the historical record. The main cause of this neglect, Julian Jackson explains in Living in Arcadia, is that during the post-Stonewall era of queer activism, Baudry’s organization fell into disfavor, dismissed as conservative, conformist, and closeted. Through extensive archival research and numerous interviews with the reclusive Baudry, Jackson challenges this reductive view, uncovering Arcadie’s pioneering efforts to educate the European public about homosexuality in an era of renewed repression. In the course of relating this absorbing history, Jackson offers a startlingly original account of the history of homosexuality in modern France.

Book The French Defeat of 1940

Download or read book The French Defeat of 1940 written by Joel Blatt and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why France, the major European continental victor in 1918, suffered total defeat in six weeks at the hands of the vanquished power of 1918 only two decades later remains moot. Why the stunning reversal of fortunes? In this volume thirteen prominent scholars reexamine the French debacle of 1940 in interwar perspectives, utilizing fresh analysis, original approaches, and new sources. Although the tenor of the volume is critical, the contributors also suggest that French preparations for war knew successes as well as failures, that French defeat was not inevitable, and that the Battle of France might have turned out differently if different choices had been made and other paths been followed.

Book Gender Based Differences in Exposure to and Usage of Camfranglais in Yaound

Download or read book Gender Based Differences in Exposure to and Usage of Camfranglais in Yaound written by Gardy Stein and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-18 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly engaging and innovative book about the Cameroonian youth language Camfranglais explores gender-based differences in exposure to, and usage of, the variety through a comparative study. It thus adopts a rare gender-based approach to the highly complex linguistic phenomenon Camfranglais, a mix of French, Verlan, English, Pidgin and Cameroonian languages. While youth language studies flourish in sociolinguistic research, this book’s explicit focus on female speakers, their linguistic attitudes and experiences of exclusion, is unique. It investigates which factors influence language choice among young, urban speakers and especially what contributes to the overall male dominance in the usage of Camfranglais. To achieve this goal, the attitudes of both adolescents and adults as well as the channels of reproduction and distribution of the variety are examined. A special focus is laid on the processes of conscious transformation and exclusion by which male speakers try to restrict the access for female speakers. The book will appeal to academic scholars from a wide variety of fields, such as (African) linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and gender-studies, as well as the general reader who wants to learn about an exciting language contact scenario and its outcome.

Book Clarissa on the Continent

Download or read book Clarissa on the Continent written by Thomas O. Beebee and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1990-08-15 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Clarissa" on the Continent defines and explores two strategies of literary translation—creative vs. preservative and strong vs. weak—as they transform one of the most influential English novels. Thomas Beebee compares the two opposing strategies as they influence the French translation of Clarissa by the novelist Antione François de Prévost and the German translation by the Göttingen Orientalist Johann David Michaelis, and in doing so he demonstrates that each translator found authority for his procedure within the text itself. Each translation is also examined in light of Richardson's other writings and placed in its literary and cultural context. This study uses translations in order to interpret Clarissa, to show how the basis for the novel's reception on the Continent was laid, and to explore the differences and interactions among three literary and cultural systems of the eighteenth century. The close examination of these two important translations enable the formulation of not only a theory of creative vs. preservative translation but also the interconnections between literary theory and translation theory. Beebee also looks at later translations of Clarissa as products of literary and historical change and at Prévostian strategies of the novel.
