Hamilton explores writing and reading practices that engage this notion in a range of poetic enterprises and theoretical reflections. By pressing the notion of philology as “love” (philia) for the “word” (logos), Hamilton’s readings investigate the breadth, depth, and limits of verbal styles that are irreducible to mere information. While a philologist of the body might understand words as corporeal vessels of core meaning, the philologist of the flesh, by focusing on the carnal qualities of language, resists taking words as mere containers. Book excerpt: In this major new study, the philosopher and cultural theorist Fredric Jameson offers a new reading of Hegel's foundational text Phenomenology of Spirit. In contrast to those who see the Phenomenology as a closed system ending with Absolute Spirit, Jameson's reading presents an open work in which Hegel has not yet reconstituted himself in terms of a systematic philosophy (Hegelianism) and in which the moments of the dialectic and its levels have not yet been formalized. Hegel's text executes a dazzling variety of changes on conceptual relationships, in terms with are never allowed to freeze over and become reified in purely philosophical named concepts. The ending, on the aftermath of the French Revolution, is interpreted by Jameson, contra Fukuyama's "end of history," as a provisional stalemate between the political and the social, which is here extrapolated to our own time.

Book excerpt: Death still comes to Everyman, but this study of three twentieth-century German plays shows the harder challenge of living without salvation in an age of war and unprecedented mass destruction. Death comes to everyone, and in the late-medieval morality play of Everyman the familiar skeleton forces the universalized central figure to come to terms with this. Only his inner resources, in the forms of Good Deeds and Knowledge, ensure that he repents and is redeemed. Three important twentieth-century German plays echo Everyman - Toller's Hinkemann, Borchert's The Man Outside, and Frisch's The Arsonists/Firebugs - but the unprecedented scale of killing in the First and Second World Wars changed the view of death, while in the Cold War the nuclear destruction literally of everyone became a possibility. Brian Murdoch traces the heritage of Everyman in the three plays in terms of dramatic effect, changes in the image of Death, and especially the problem of living with existential guilt. Death, now over-fed, still has to be faced, but Everyman has the harder problem of living with the awareness of human wickedness without the possibility of salvation. All three plays have tended to be viewed in their specific historical contexts, but by viewing them less rigidly and as part of a long dramatic tradition, Murdoch shows that all present a message of lasting and universal significance. They pose directly to the theater audience questions not just of how to cope with death, but how to cope with life.

Book excerpt: Examines a variety of texts from late Enlightenment Germany to provide a nuanced rethinking of women's roles as wives, mothers, and housekeepers, creators of the cultural spaces of the home. Domesticity, a set of practices, emotions, and values culminating in a nourishing emotional and physical ambience - the "feel" of being at home and belonging - connects one's subjective experience to the material environment. In late Enlightenment Germany, writers from Joachim Heinrich Campe and Theodor von Hippel to Sophie La Roche imagined the home as a space where true "humanity" would be realized. The high-stakes cultural formation of domesticity was part of a complex discourse on the pursuit of happiness as a life well lived. As domesticity became a surrogate for the lost religious certainties of the vanishing pre-modern world, an obsessive anxiety concerning its delineation in discourse suggested its importance but also its fragility and the consequences of its failure. Karin A. Wurst examines didactic novels by female authors, autobiographical texts, popular philosophy, advice literature, periodicals, pedagogical tracts, and household manuals in pursuit of a nuanced rethinking of the relationship between women's roles as wives, mothers, and housekeepers and as creators of the cultural spaces of the home. She finds that the high-value imaginary of domesticity encouraged women's agency insofar as they were tasked with turning theoretical ideals into everyday practice. At the same time, her book shows the under-illuminated contribution of women's work to social and political change from within the patriarchal structures of eighteenth-century Germany.

He created the Cosmos - the region of the distinctions that have intelligibility to the intelligence of human awareness (Ge-wahr-sein). They belong to the human power of knowing through simultaneity, due to God's generosity. Plato affirms, in his "Timaeus" (36d-41b) the importance of the 'psyche' - the soul. It means in Greek originally 'breath' , this affirms the reality of 'self-movement' - 'Eigenbewegung. It is the power whose ability to change depends on the person's own accord, its own intention.. It is the anti-dote to Newton's 'understanding', of the 'law' of the physical, material bodies, which demand another power to change their movement . The reality of psyche justifies the concept of 'auto-kinesis' - as cause.We can understand that God created the world as good as possible. He was good and the good is never jealous! He told us that He is our Father, of the creation that is indissoluble, if 'He wills it so'. All that is bound may be undone, but you shall not be liable to the fate of death, having in His will a greater and mightier bond than those with which you were bound. The writings of the British philosopher Alfred A.E. Taylor gave me better understanding of the validity to acknowledge our human contact with eternal reality, culminating in the concept of "Creator God", which our contemporary academicians consider spurious. LaPlace had assured Napoleon already that we do not need the concept of God any longer; he was not aware that the 'sciences of physics' were under the veil of dubious numbers. accepting that : "Minus times Minus is plus" "The Reason for this we do not discuss"!! Pascal was one of the most out-spoken to reject as 'pure nonsense' the teaching of the 'subtraction of 'four' from '0'. Some tried to understand that to take four from zero remains 'zero'. Yet there never was 'any thing' to be taken! Nietzsche had warned us, that "the numbers had put a 'veil' over our thoughts".The Arabic number system was soo 'handy'!. The 'death of God' was soon proclaimed. The asthonishing fact that the oldest societies in the Euphrat-Tigres triangle had concepts of "Paradise lost" in their memory- langua≥ in their -Sumerian, Indo-Persian Lore. The trilingual text could finally be decipher achieved in 1844 by Rawlinson, when he achieved to decipher the ancient form of writing used in Mesopotamia for many languages in the millennia leading to the first century A.D. He could copy relief sculptures and their accompanying cuneiform inscriptions in Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian. He could decipher their meaning. They became as the Rosetta Stone for the Hieroglyphics. In 1857 a contest sponsored by the London Royal Asiatic society, pitting Him against other Scholars, proved that he had broken the code. The concept of Paradise was known to these societies, 4000-3000 years prior to Hebrew report. It is worth-while to remember. Brigitte Dehmelt Cooper tried to keep these distinctions in her attention.
