Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Gentle Legions, Richard Carter analyzed the large voluntary health organizations in America. He set out to analyze the impact of this “humanitarian and social movement” and the struggle between the health organization movement to maintain independent campaigns and the United Fund movement to incorporate these organizations into a single community campaign. The issues he identified in the late 1950s are still major issues today. Carter believes that voluntary activity is crucial to American democracy.

Book Voluntary Health Agency Support of Health Research and Development

Download or read book Voluntary Health Agency Support of Health Research and Development written by Mary Ann Hoff and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on the role of voluntary health agencies in support of medical and health-related research and development. Health voluntaries are associations which solicit financial support from the general public to carry on activities which benefit the health of the community. Such program activities include medical and health-related R&D, health education, and medical services activities. Voluntary health agencies are among the organizations which meet the tax exemption standards of Section 501(C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, allowing them a status as nonprofit organizations which operate for charitable, scientific, religious, or educational purposes. To the layman, voluntary health agencies are charities. The study reported here provides a profile of Voluntary Health Agency support of health R&D. The early sections provide descriptions of several major features of such support. The last section summarizes a test of the feasibility of using regression analysis for estimating Voluntaries' expenditures for years in the immediate future. The study was written in the early months of 1975 before final figures for 1974 expenditures of the health agencies were available. Projections, therefore, focus on 1974 and 1975.

Book Exploring Challenges Progress and New Models for Engaging the Public in the Clinical Research Enterprise

Download or read book Exploring Challenges Progress and New Models for Engaging the Public in the Clinical Research Enterprise written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-07-25 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a summary of a workshop focused on exploring the role of the public in the Clinical Research Enterprise. The Clinical Research Enterprise depends upon practitioners, policy makers, and others for participation in trials, ethical review of research, and continued support of research funding. However, the role of the public has expanded beyond this traditional model as consumers have begun to demand a role in the formulation of the research agenda and in the design, review, and pursuit of research. This report identifies four major challenges to the Clinical Research Enterprise: enhancing public participation in clinical research, which includes making the system safer and faster; developing the necessary information systems that are needed to make the clinical research enterprise a coordinated and seamless whole; fostering an adequately trained workforce; and ensuring adequate funding for clinical research. In addition, the report identifies two translational blocks-from basic science into clinical practice and from the clinical identification of things that work into broader application to improve medical care and the public's health. This workshop summary addresses the contribution of the public to overcoming these obstacles.

Book The Social Impact of AIDS in the United States

Download or read book The Social Impact of AIDS in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe's "Black Death" contributed to the rise of nation states, mercantile economies, and even the Reformation. Will the AIDS epidemic have similar dramatic effects on the social and political landscape of the twenty-first century? This readable volume looks at the impact of AIDS since its emergence and suggests its effects in the next decade, when a million or more Americans will likely die of the disease. The Social Impact of AIDS in the United States addresses some of the most sensitive and controversial issues in the public debate over AIDS. This landmark book explores how AIDS has affected fundamental policies and practices in our major institutions, examining: How America's major religious organizations have dealt with sometimes conflicting values: the imperative of care for the sick versus traditional views of homosexuality and drug use. Hotly debated public health measures, such as HIV antibody testing and screening, tracing of sexual contacts, and quarantine. The potential risk of HIV infection to and from health care workers. How AIDS activists have brought about major change in the way new drugs are brought to the marketplace. The impact of AIDS on community-based organizations, from volunteers caring for individuals to the highly political ACT-UP organization. Coping with HIV infection in prisons. Two case studies shed light on HIV and the family relationship. One reports on some efforts to gain legal recognition for nonmarital relationships, and the other examines foster care programs for newborns with the HIV virus. A case study of New York City details how selected institutions interact to give what may be a picture of AIDS in the future. This clear and comprehensive presentation will be of interest to anyone concerned about AIDS and its impact on the country: health professionals, sociologists, psychologists, advocates for at-risk populations, and interested individuals.

Book Who Will Keep the Public Healthy

Download or read book Who Will Keep the Public Healthy written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-04-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioterrorism, drug-resistant disease, transmission of disease by global travel . . . there's no shortage of challenges facing America's public health officials. Men and women preparing to enter the field require state-of-the-art training to meet these increasing threats to the public health. But are the programs they rely on provide the high caliber professional training they require? Who Will Keep the Public Healthy? provides an overview of the past, present, and future of public health education, assessing its readiness to provide the training and education needed to prepare men and women to face 21st century challenges. Advocating an ecological approach to public health, the Institute of Medicine examines the role of public health schools and degree-granting programs, medical schools, nursing schools, and government agencies, as well as other institutions that foster public health education and leadership. Specific recommendations address the content of public health education, qualifications for faculty, availability of supervised practice, opportunities for cross-disciplinary research and education, cooperation with government agencies, and government funding for education. Eight areas of critical importance to public health education in the 21st century are examined in depth: informatics, genomics, communication, cultural competence, community-based participatory research, global health, policy and law, and public health ethics. The book also includes a discussion of the policy implications of its ecological framework.
