Book excerpt: India has a great tradition of voluntary service and social welfare and in spite of rapid changes; the urge to serve fellowrnen is still strong and wide spread. Right through the ages this tradition has been accepted as social obligation on the part of the individual towards his less fortunate humans. Religion emphasized the virtue of 'dan' or alms i.e., free gift that encompassed different forms of social service. Institutions like 'maths' and temples were responsible for the religiously inspired forms of service, and social institution like caste and joint family were concerned with the care of the handicapped, the destitute, the widow and the aged. Religious considerations by and large, motivated acts of charity and service to please God and acquire 'Punya'. They also generated honest desire in a large number of people to help the needy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985 The Role of Voluntary Organisations in Social Welfare considers the voluntary sector as a provider of social welfare. The book asks the fundamental questions for those involved in social welfare: what should the role of this voluntary sector be, and what should its relationship be with the government sector? Reporting on extensive original research undertaken for the Joseph Rowntree Memorial Trust, the study examines the functions, staffing, funding and control of voluntary organisations. It looks at the relationship with the government sector, explores the increasingly important questions of accountability and discusses future prospects.
Download or read book Women in Social Work written by Ronald G. Walton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-24 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have always played an important, and dominant, role in social work. Originally published in 1975, their special contribution to the profession is the theme of this book, in which demographic data, biographical material and records of social work organizations are skilfully used to show how women shaped the development of social work from 1860 to the 1970s, often in the face of strong male resistance. Covering the earlier years of the period, Dr Walton examines the links with the general movement for women’s rights as well as differences in the attitudes of women social workers to those of the suffrage movement. He shows how the growing influx of men into social work in more recent times has affected the position of their female colleagues. He discusses variations in the proportion of sexes in probation, psychiatric social work, child welfare and medical social work, analyses typical patterns of employment for women social workers, and evaluates the appointment, in 1971, of directors of the social services. The author also looks into the future, exploring the potential contribution of women to the social work profession, with suggestions as to how the problems of women’s employment in social work might be overcome.

Download or read book Social Development written by James Midgley and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1995-08-03 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social development approach seeks to integrate economic and social policies within a dynamic development process in order to achieve social welfare objectives. This first comprehensive textbook on the subject demonstrates that social development offers critically significant insights for the developed as well as the developing world. James Midgley describes the social development approach, traces its origins in developing countries, reviews theoretical issues in the field and analyzes different strategies in social development. By adding the developmental dimension, social development is shown to transcend the dichotomy between the residualist approach, which concentrates on targeting resources to the most needy, and the institutional approach which urges extensive state involvement in welfare.
Download or read book The Challenge of Community Mental Health and Erich Lindemann written by David G. Satin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes make new contributions to the history of psychiatry and society in three ways: First, they propose a theory of values and ideology influencing the evolution of psychiatry and society in recurring cycles, and survey the history of psychiatry in recent centuries in light of this theory. Second, they review the waxing, prominence, and waning of Community Mental Health as an example of a segment of this cyclical history of psychiatry. Third, they provide the first biography of Erich Lindemann, one of the founders of social and community psychiatry, and explore the interaction of the prominent contributor with the historical environment and the influence this has on both. We return to the issue of values and ideologies as influences on psychiatry, whether or not it is accepted as professionally proper. This is intended to stimulate self-reflection and the acceptance of the values sources of ideology, their effect on professional practice, and the effect of values-based ideology on the community in which psychiatry practices. The books will be of interest to psychiatric teachers and practitioners, health planners, and socially responsible citizens.
