Book Faith Culture and the Dual System

Download or read book Faith Culture and the Dual System written by Bernadette O'Keeffe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986, this book is based on research carried out in 102 County secondary and Church of England secondary and primary schools in London, the North West Region and the West Midlands. It analyses data collected from interviews with 102 headteachers, 67 religious education teachers and 139 parents whose children were attending Church schools. The book is divided into four main areas. First it examines pupil admission policies, illustrating their effect both with the schools and on the neighbourhood. Second, it outlines the policies and practices adopted by Church school governors in appointing teaching staff and discusses the implications of these policies. The third area deals with school worship, assemblies and religious education and their place in the life of the school. The study highlights important issues and challenges facing schools especially where there is considerable religious diversity among pupils. It discusses some of the difficulties of implementing the law relating to the daily act of worship and why some schools observe the law while others disregard it. Key issues are explored which are central to the teaching of religious education: How RE teachers respond to religious diversity; why Christianity may or may not be given a central place in RE classes; what parents and RE teachers hope RE classes will achieve for pupils by the time they leave school. The fourth area focusses on multicultural education and illustrates the divergent views of headteachers on the aims, purposes and relevance on multicultural education.

Book Religion and Volunteering

Download or read book Religion and Volunteering written by Lesley Hustinx and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is considered a key predictor of volunteering: the more religious people are, the more likely they are to volunteer. This positive association enjoys significant support in current research; in fact, it could be considered the ‘default perspective’ on the relationship between both phenomena. In this book, the authors claim that, although the dominant approach is legitimate and essential, it nonetheless falls short in grasping the full complexity of the interaction between religion and volunteering. It needs to be recognized that there are tensions between religion and volunteering, and that these tensions are intensifying as a result of the changing meaning and role of religion in society. Therefore, the central aim and contribution of this book is to demonstrate that the relationship between religion and volunteering is not univocal but differentiated, ambiguous and sometimes provocative. By introducing the reader to a much wider landscape of perspectives, this volume offers a richer, more complex and variable understanding. Apart from the established positive causality, the authors examine tensions between religion and volunteering from the perspective of religious obligation, religious change, processes of secularization and notions of post-secularity. They further explore how actions that are considered altruistic, politically neutral and motivated by religious beliefs can be used for political reasons. This volume opens up the field to new perspectives on religious actors and on how religion and volunteering are enacted outside Western liberal and Christian societies. It emphasizes interdisciplinary perspectives, including theology, philosophy, sociology, political science, anthropology and architecture.

Book Voluntary Religious Activities in Public Schools

Download or read book Voluntary Religious Activities in Public Schools written by Jan C. Robbins and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet was written to help school officials understand the law concerning public forums and voluntary religious activities in public schools. Compliance dilemmas arising from the First Amendment establishment of religion clause and the accompanying free speech and free expression clauses, along with 14th Amendment equal protection provisions, are discussed in the introductory first chapter. The United States Supreme Court has often frowned on government actions appearing to advance religion in schools. Two opposing interpretations, "separation" and "accommodation," are thoroughly discussed in the next two chapters. The "Lemon v. Kurtzman" case (1971), while avoiding definitions, offers a three-part establishment-clause test that looks at secular legislative purpose, primary effect that neither advances nor inhibits religion, and avoidance of excessive government entanglement in determining the constitutionality of state actions. Chapter 3 details a complex District Court decision ("Bender v. Williamsport"), overruled by the Third Circuit Court, that essentially accommodates students' voluntary afterschool religious meetings as part of a school's "limited public forum." This decision was further strengthened by Congress's passage of the Equal Access Act (1984) discussed in a later chapter. Apparently, the free speech clause may protect students' right to pursue voluntary religious activities in school, while the free exercise of religion clause denies this right! To help administrators sift through the confusion, the final chapter suggests policy guidelines defining the public forum status of school facilities. (MLH)
