Book Volumetric Analysis of Uranium Metal

Download or read book Volumetric Analysis of Uranium Metal written by J. L. Long and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A precise and rapid method for the volumetric assay of uranium metal has been developed. The method consists of dissolving a weighed sample in an aqueous mixture of hydrochloric, sulfuric, and fluosilicic acids. The resulting uranium solution is titrated without a subsequent reduction step.

Book The Metallurgy of Nuclear Fuel

Download or read book The Metallurgy of Nuclear Fuel written by V. S. Yemel'Yanov and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Metallurgy of Nuclear Fuel: Properties and Principles of the Technology of Uranium, Thorium and Plutonium is a systematic analysis of the metallurgy of nuclear fuel, with emphasis on the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties as well as the technology of uranium, thorium, and plutonium, together with their alloys and compounds. The minerals and raw material sources of nuclear fuel are discussed, along with the principles of the technology of the raw material processing and the production of the principal compounds, and of the pure metals and alloys. Comprised of three parts, this volume begins with an introduction to the history of the discovery of uranium and its position in the periodic system; its use as a nuclear fuel; radioactivity and isotopic composition; alloys and compounds; and physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. The effect of mechanical and thermal treatment, thermal cycling and irradiation on the physicochemical properties of uranium is also examined. The next two sections are devoted to thorium and plutonium and includes chapters dealing with their uses, alloys and compounds, and methods of recovery and purification. This book is written for university students, but should also prove useful to young production engineers and scientific workers who are concerned with problems in the metallurgy of nuclear fuel.

Carbon dioxide must also be separately determined. The following analyses are of commercial prepared originally by reducing the chloride with potassium, and this process, or some modification of it, was the only one available until a few years ago. Moissan prepared "cast uranium" by submitting an intimate mixture of the oxide and sugar charcoal, contained in a coke crucible, to the electric current. He isolated a crystallized carbide (C3U2) whose melting point is much higher than that of platinum, and he prepared samples of the metal containing less than i per cent, of impurities. On this latter metal and other samples prepared by the electrolysis of the double uranium-sodium chloride (UCl4.2NaCl) he determined some of its properties. Ferro-uranium alloys are formed by the last-mentioned process when iron electrodes are used. The metal and some of its alloys have been prepared by various modified forms of the alumino-thermic process: the author, however, found this method to yield poor and very uncertain results. Pure uranium is a white non-magnetic metal, and can be easily filed; it does not scratch glass, is easily carbonized, and may be tempered. Its specific gravity is said to be about 187, but the carbonized metal usually met with has a specific gravity of about 12 only. When in fine powder the metal burns at a comparatively low tempera ture (170 in pure oxygen), and also very readily combines with nitrogen. It tarnishes on exposure to air, and also decomposes water to some extent, particularly if heated. Metallic uranium is decomposed by dilute hydrochloric acid, but black flocks of carbide persist until a few drops of nitric acid have been added. With ferro-uranium alloys or uranium steels it is advisable to filter off this...

Book The Volumetric Determination of Uranium After Reduction by Lead in Dilute Perchloric Acid Solution

Download or read book The Volumetric Determination of Uranium After Reduction by Lead in Dilute Perchloric Acid Solution written by and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rapid and convenient volumetric method is described for determining uranium; it is suitable for high-grade ores and oxide concentrates. A dilute boiling solution of the sample in perchloric acid is reduced with granular lead and cooled under an atmosphere of carbon dioxide; after decanting the solution and adding ferric perchlorate, it is titrated with standard potassium dichromate solution. An intensive study has been made to determine the nature of the interference caused by certain elements. The elements found to interfere can be removed by precipitation with cupferron in the perchloric acid solution. Several features of this separation have been investigated. The results obtained for uranium oxide samples by the proposed method are compared with those by a standard gravimetric method.
