Book Genetic Toxicology of the Diet

Download or read book Genetic Toxicology of the Diet written by Ib Knudsen and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genotoxic compounds in the diet represent a truly international problem. This problem was recognized in Japan and the United States of America only a few years ago by the application of in vitro mutagenicity tests to prepared and unprepared components of our diet. Now new discoveries are appearing every day concerning genotoxic compounds in our food supply from all over the world. It seems likely that naturally occurring genotoxic compounds in the diet as well as genotoxic compounds formed during storage, preparation, and digestion of the food are important for the induction of cancer in humans and of hereditary changes in human germ cells. Other scientific data indicate that dietary constituents have the potential to modify the genotoxic effect of these compounds in humans. These findings indicate new possibilities for the prevention of human diseases of genotoxic origin through relevant changes in the composition of the diet. With this background, and due to the rapid accumulation of new data in the field, it was approved by the Board of the International Association of Environmental Mutagen Societies that one of the satellite meetings of the Fourth International Conference on Environmental Mutagens in Scandinavia 1985 should cover the aspects of mutagens and carcinogens in the diet. The satellite symposium on "Genetic Toxicology of the Diet" took place in Copenhagen, June 19-22, 1985. The present volume contains the proceedings of this symposium.

Book Carcinogens and Anticarcinogens in the Human Diet

Download or read book Carcinogens and Anticarcinogens in the Human Diet written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-03-12 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite increasing knowledge of human nutrition, the dietary contribution to cancer remains a troubling question. Carcinogens and Anticarcinogens assembles the best available information on the magnitude of potential cancer riskâ€"and potential anticarcinogenic effectâ€"from naturally occurring chemicals compared with risk from synthetic chemical constituents. The committee draws important conclusions about diet and cancer, including the carcinogenic role of excess calories and fat, the anticarcinogenic benefit of fiber and other substances, and the impact of food additive regulation. The book offers recommendations for epidemiological and diet research. Carcinogens and Anticarcinogens provides a readable overview of issues and addresses critical questions: Does diet contribute to an appreciable proportion of human cancer? Are there significant interactions between carcinogens and anticarcinogens in the diet? The volume discusses the mechanisms of carcinogenic and anticarcinogenic properties and considers whether techniques used to evaluate the carcinogenic potential of synthetics can be used with naturally occurring chemicals. The committee provides criteria for prioritizing the vast number of substances that need to be tested. Carcinogens and Anticarcinogens clarifies the issues and sets the direction for further investigations into diet and cancer. This volume will be of interest to anyone involved in food and health issues: policymakers, regulators, researchers, nutrition professionals, and health advocates.

Book Soybean and Health

Download or read book Soybean and Health written by Hany El-Shemy and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide, soybean seed proteins represent a major source of amino acids for human and animal nutrition. Soybean seeds are an important and economical source of protein in the diet of many developed and developing countries. Soy is a complete protein, and soy-foods are rich in vitamins and minerals. Soybean protein provides all the essential amino acids in the amounts needed for human health. Recent research suggests that soy may also lower risk of prostate, colon and breast cancers as well as osteoporosis and other bone health problems, and alleviate hot flashes associated with menopause. This volume is expected to be useful for student, researchers and public who are interested in soybean.

Download or read book Diet Nutrition and Cancer written by Takamatsu no Miya Hi Gan Kenkyū Kikin. International Symposium and published by VSP. This book was released on 1986-12 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As data is accumulated life-style characteristics are shown to be major determinates of cancer risk in humans. Of these, diet is the most ubiquitous. Food constituents have been identified which can cause or enhance the likelihood of cancer and, conversely, protect against it. Such data encourage the hope that a full understanding of the impact of dietary constituents on carcinogenesis will lead to important means of cancer control. This international symposium coincided with an increasing awareness of the major impact diet can have on the occurrence of cancer, and at a time when the evaluation of existing data was critical for developing approaches to a complicated and important area of cancer research. The participating scientists represented a variety of disciplines ranging from epidemiology to molecular biology and the papers cover a diversity of subjects to provide a valuable state-of-the-art review of this topic. The presentations give rise to a sense of cautious optimism that future productive research on the relationship between diet, nutrition and cancer is feasible, and could result in the development of useful strategies for cancer prevention.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Helmut K. Seitz
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642859305

Download or read book Colorectal Cancer written by Helmut K. Seitz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 20 years have seen a surge of research into colorectal cancer, which is a reflection of the need to improve our methods of treating patients suffering from this increasingly common form of cancer. Greater knowledge of the basic mechanisms involved in colorectal carcinogenesis is an essential prerequisite to improvements in cancer prevention. In this volume the editors have brought together an impressive list of experts to cover the epidemiology, pathophysiology, morphology and basis for new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to early detection and prevention. This broad scientific approach provides the reader with up-to-date review of our current state of knowl edge of colorectal carcinogenesis and indicates how this information can be used to generate more research and create new opportunities for diagnosis and treatment. This is a book of knowledge and ideas, some of them still at the stage of theoretical interest, but others with practical potential for the care of patients. I recommend it to those who have a research interest in colorectal carcinogenesis, as well as to readers who wish to know just how far medical scientists have progressed in their efforts to achieve the ideal of cancer prevention.

Book Role of the Gut Flora in Toxicity and Cancer

Download or read book Role of the Gut Flora in Toxicity and Cancer written by I Rowland and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Role of the Gut Flora in Toxicity and Cancer examines the relationship between the gut microflora and its host. The aim is to provide a comprehensive view of the contribution of the gut flora to foreign compound metabolism in man and laboratory animals. The object has been to relate this bacterial metabolism to toxic events occurring in mammals and to consider the interrelationships of bacterial and mammalian metabolic pathways. The early chapters are set the scene and provide a background to the sections on metabolism of specific groups of compounds which follow. Subsequent chapters encompass the bacterial metabolism of both xenobiotics and food components, and concentrate on those reactions which have actual or potential toxicological and/or clinical importance. The concluding chapters provide assessments of the role of the gut flora in the etiology of cancer, in particular from the point of view of the formation of carcinogens, mutagens, and promotors within the large bowel.
