Book Void Formation and Solute Segregation in Ion irradiated Niobium base Alloys

Download or read book Void Formation and Solute Segregation in Ion irradiated Niobium base Alloys written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The void-volume fraction in unalloyed Nb and Nb-base binary alloys containing either approx. 2.4 a/o Mo, Ti, Zr, Hf, Ni, Fe, V, or Ta has been determined following 3.0-MeV 58Ni/sup +/ ion irradiation at 1225 K to approx. 50 dpa. also, the thermal- and irradiation-induced segregation of these substitutional-atom solutes and the intrinsic, interstitial-O impurity (approx. 0.06 a/o) to the specimen surface and within the irradiation-damaged layer have been determined. The void-volume fraction and the segregation of solutes have been shown to be correlated by the solute diffusivity and the relative chemical affinity of the substitutional solutes for O. The correlated diffusion of vacancy defects and O atoms is postulated to explain the experimental results.

Book Effects of Neutron Irradiation on the Microstructure and Microhardness of Niobium Base Alloys

Download or read book Effects of Neutron Irradiation on the Microstructure and Microhardness of Niobium Base Alloys written by DJ. Michel and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microstructure and microhardness of several niobium-base binary and ternary alloys were investigated following fast neutron irradiation to a fluence of 18 dpa (4.8 x 1022 n/cm2, >0.1 MeV) at 650°C. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) procedures were employed to observe the microstructure of the alloy specimens following neutron irradiation and in the unirradiated condition. Microhardness measurements were made on irradiated and unirradiated specimens to obtain information on the effects of irradiation on mechanical properties. Neutron irradiation of the Nb-1Mo and Nb-5Mo-1Zr alloys produced voids and a high density of dislocation loops. No voids were observed in the irradiated Nb-1Zr alloy. Microhardness measurements of the irradiated alloys indicated that the effect of the fast neutron irradiation was to increase the microhardness of all the niobium-base alloys. The magnitude of the microhardness increase was found to be a function of the alloy composition, with the smallest increase observed in the Nb-5Mo-1Zr alloy. The observations in this study are in agreement with the previous work, which has shown that molybdenum and zirconium additions were effective in suppressing void formation in niobium-base alloys for irradiation temperatures up to ?1100°C.

Book Effects of Neutron Irradiation on the Microstructure of Niobium and Niobium Base Alloys

Download or read book Effects of Neutron Irradiation on the Microstructure of Niobium and Niobium Base Alloys written by DJ. Michel and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microstructure and microhardness of niobium and commercial prototype niobium-base alloys have been investigated following fast neutron irradiation to a fluence of 1.1 x 1022 neutrons (n)/cm2 (0.1 MeV), 4 displacements per atom (dpa), at 482°C. The purpose of this work was to determine the effects of molybdenum and zirconium alloy additions on the resistance of niobium-base alloys to neutron irradiation. Neutron irradiation of the niobium and Nb-1Mo alloy produced very small voids whose mean diameters were in the range of 30 to 35 Å. In all other alloys, however, no voids were observed and the principal effect of the neutron irradiation was to form a high density of 30 to 40 Å diameter dislocation loops which are believed to be primarily of interstitial character. The effect of fast neutron irradiation was to increase the microhardness of both niobium and all its alloys, with the largest increase in the Nb-1Zr alloy and the smallest increase in the ternary Nb-5Mo-1Zr alloy. Previous work on niobium and Nb-1Zr alloy has shown that a vacancy trapping mechanism is particularly effective at irradiation temperatures up to 600°C for fast neutron fluences of 2.5 x 1022 n/cm2 (0.1 MeV). The observation from the present experiments that molybdenum and zirconium additions were effective in the suppression of void formation suggests that a vacancy trapping mechanism was operative in the present alloys. The smaller hardness increase observed for the ternary alloys suggests that these alloys may maintain good engineering properties in addition to their improved resistance to void formation.

Book Radiation Processes in Crystal Solid Solutions

Download or read book Radiation Processes in Crystal Solid Solutions written by Gennadi Gladyshev and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2012-03-31 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation Processes In Crystal Solid Solutions is a monograph explaining processes occurring in two classes of crystal solids (metal alloys and doped alkali halides) under irradiation by various types of radiation (alpha, beta, gamma, X-radiations, ions). While metal alloys may differ in high radiation stability, solid solutions based on alkali halides are very radiation-sensitive materials. Radiation defect production mechanisms, intrinsic and extrinsic radiation defects, a role of complexes an impurity-radiation defect which explain distinction in radiating stability of the specified classes of solid solutions are discussed in this e-book. To describe radiation induced phase transformations, two approaches are highlighted: kinetic and thermodynamic. This e-book also includes research on the effect of small radiation doses in a structurally solid phase state of a solution along with a semi-quantitative estimation of radiation effects with respect to temperature changes. This e-book should be a useful reference for advanced readers interested in the physics of radiation and solid state physics.

Book Comprehensive Nuclear Materials

Download or read book Comprehensive Nuclear Materials written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2020-07-22 with total page 4871 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials in a nuclear environment are exposed to extreme conditions of radiation, temperature and/or corrosion, and in many cases the combination of these makes the material behavior very different from conventional materials. This is evident for the four major technological challenges the nuclear technology domain is facing currently: (i) long-term operation of existing Generation II nuclear power plants, (ii) the design of the next generation reactors (Generation IV), (iii) the construction of the ITER fusion reactor in Cadarache (France), (iv) and the intermediate and final disposal of nuclear waste. In order to address these challenges, engineers and designers need to know the properties of a wide variety of materials under these conditions and to understand the underlying processes affecting changes in their behavior, in order to assess their performance and to determine the limits of operation. Comprehensive Nuclear Materials, Second Edition, Seven Volume Set provides broad ranging, validated summaries of all the major topics in the field of nuclear material research for fission as well as fusion reactor systems. Attention is given to the fundamental scientific aspects of nuclear materials: fuel and structural materials for fission reactors, waste materials, and materials for fusion reactors. The articles are written at a level that allows undergraduate students to understand the material, while providing active researchers with a ready reference resource of information. Most of the chapters from the first Edition have been revised and updated and a significant number of new topics are covered in completely new material. During the ten years between the two editions, the challenge for applications of nuclear materials has been significantly impacted by world events, public awareness, and technological innovation. Materials play a key role as enablers of new technologies, and we trust that this new edition of Comprehensive Nuclear Materials has captured the key recent developments. Critically reviews the major classes and functions of materials, supporting the selection, assessment, validation and engineering of materials in extreme nuclear environments Comprehensive resource for up-to-date and authoritative information which is not always available elsewhere, even in journals Provides an in-depth treatment of materials modeling and simulation, with a specific focus on nuclear issues Serves as an excellent entry point for students and researchers new to the field
