Over the years, Dahi has heard many stories of other migrants and how their lives were before they embarked on their arduous journeys to make it to the US. They had often talked to her about the reasons for their migration, such as the systematic injustices in their own countries, fear of persecution, family situations, or poverty. In this book, Dahi decides to give voices to those people by writing fictionalized stories that represent similar aspects of those experiences and journeys. Professor Dahi highlights the power of education and having a good support system in each of the stories as ways to overcome obstacles and to dream bigger. Even though most characters in these stories face a contradictory reality to their idea of what living in America entails, some of them find ways to assimilate and settle down, and others continue to do whatever it takes to succeed in accomplishing what they had initially set out to do. The author hopes to broaden the reader’s understanding of migrants’ situations and their reasons for choosing to come to America as well as what struggles they must overcome and what difficulties they must endure in order to find better lives for them and their families. Each story in this book is followed with activities that promote vocabulary building, grammar and critical thinking. This reader can be used for language learners and young readers because it compels them to reminisce about their own initiation into a new culture or new life situations in general. In each story, there are lessons to be learned or voices with which to identify.

Book excerpt: The 'reparational turn' in the field of law has resulted in the increased use of so-called 'informal' approaches to conflict resolution, including primarily the three mechanisms considered in this book: mediation, restorative justice and reparations. While proponents of these mechanisms have acclaimed their communicative and democratic promise, critics have charged that mediation, restorative justice and reparations all potentially serve as means for encouraging citizens to internalize and mimic the rationalities of governance. Indeed, the critics suggest that informal justice's supposed oppositional relationship to formal justice is, at base, a mutually reinforcing one, in which each system relies on the other for its effective operation, rather than the two being locked in a struggle for dominance. This book contributes to the discussion of the confluence of informal and formal justice by providing a clearer picture of the justice 'field' through the notion of the 'informal/formal justice complex.' This term, adapted from Garland and Sparks (2000), describes a cultural formation in which adversarial/punitive and conciliatory/restorative justice forms coexist in relative harmony despite their apparent contradictions. Situating this complex within the context of neoliberalism, this book identifies the points of rupture in the informal/formal justice complex to pinpoint how and where a truly alternative and 'transformative' justice (i.e. a justice that challenges and counters the hegemony of formal legal practices, opening the field of law to a broader array of actors and ideas) might be established through the tools of mediation, restorative justice and reparations.

In one direction lies the reproduction of oppression and marginalization, continued distrust, and further fragmentation. In the other, a route toward healing, compassion, and fairness. How then do we prepare our leaders of tomorrow to walk the path of justice rather than take the road to ruin? Changing the dominant narratives in society involves preparing skilled social critics and knowledgeable advocates for positive and sustainable change through education. However, when leadership education fails to consider social justice issues, or when social justice education omits leadership learning, both fall short of their goals. This texts links issues of social justice, equity, and equality, to leadership knowledge, skills, and values, with the intent of offering theoretical, practical, and policy recommendations to improve the work of educators charged with preparing undergraduates for the complexities of leadership in all its forms.
