Book Voices from the Prostate Underground

Download or read book Voices from the Prostate Underground written by Dave Pratt and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Voices from the Prostate Underground offers excellent insight into the experiences of men and their families who have dealt with and survived prostate cancer. Their testimonies provide a great encouragement for those facing treatment." J. Lynn Martell, Director of Special Services, Radiation Medicine, Loma Linda University Medical Center Men don't talk about Prostate Cancer, so who is a guy supposed to talk to about treatment options and other "guy" issues when he is diagnosed with prostate cancer? Talk to a urologist, and they generally recommend surgery. Talk to a radiation oncologist, and radiation is the best approach. Others health care providers prescribe hormones, "watchful waiting", laparoscopic surgery, cryosurgery, brachytherapy, and more. What doctors recommend is based on their own experiences, training, and professional bias. The "whole story" is not generally available from any one specialist and what you hear from your doctor generally results in more questions than answers. "Voices from the Prostate Underground" includes the stories of men and their families, who have survived prostate cancer through a variety of treatments. The stories are told in their own, unique voices as each man answers the five questions that newly diagnosed men most often ask those who have survived the disease: How were you diagnosed? What did you decide to do? What treatment did you decide on? How did things work out? How did the experience affect your life? All funds raised from the sale of this book will be donated to UsToo and the Slater Research Chair at the Loma Linda University Medical Center to support cancer research and treatment.

Book excerpt: This fine art monograph/faux underground comic facsimile is a psychedelic trip through the hippie movement. In 2017, Gary Panter created an art installation, Hippie Trip, inspired by his first visit to a head shop in 1968. It expanded his mind to the possibilities of psychedelic art and music, analog crafts and drug culture. Crashpad is an extension of that installation and a riff on underground comics creators such as Zap's R. Crumb, Victor Moscoso, Robert Williams, and other icons of that era.

Book The Hitler Kiss

Download or read book The Hitler Kiss written by Radomir Luza and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gripping autobiography is at once a heart-pounding adventure story, a moving recollection of a larger-than-life father, and an important account of the Czech resistance. Radomir Luza's father was a revered army general when the Nazis stormed into Czechoslovakia. After his father went underground to avoid arrest and torture, the nineteen-year-old Radomir spent weeks in a Gestapo prison. Upon his release, he joined his father in hiding. General Luza became the military commander of the Czech resistance, while Radomir secretly helped organize the country's largest resistance network. Luza's narrative makes palpable the terror of being constantly hunted and nearly snared by betrayals and Gestapo raids. The Hitler Kiss is a portrait of courage, tenderness, optimism, and sheer survival.

Book Castration and Culture in the Middle Ages

Download or read book Castration and Culture in the Middle Ages written by Larissa Tracy and published by DS Brewer. This book was released on 2013 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays exploring medieval castration, as reflected in archaeology, law, historical record, and literary motifs. Castration and castrati have always been facets of western culture, from myth and legend to law and theology, from eunuchs guarding harems to the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century castrati singers. Metaphoric castration pervadesa number of medieval literary genres, particularly the Old French fabliaux - exchanges of power predicated upon the exchange or absence of sexual desire signified by genitalia - but the plain, literal act of castration and its implications are often overlooked. This collection explores this often taboo subject and its implications for cultural mores and custom in Western Europe, seeking to demystify and demythologize castration. Its subjects includearchaeological studies of eunuchs; historical accounts of castration in trials of combat; the mutilation of political rivals in medieval Wales; Anglo-Saxon and Frisian legal and literary examples of castration as punishment; castration as comedy in the Old French fabliaux; the prohibition against genital mutilation in hagiography; and early-modern anxieties about punitive castration enacted on the Elizabethan stage. The introduction reflects on these topics in the context of arguably the most well-known victim of castration in the middle ages, Abelard. LARISSA TRACY is Associate Professor of Medieval Literature at Longwood University. Contributors: Larissa Tracy, Kathryn Reusch, Shaun Tougher, Jack Collins, Rolf H. Bremmer Jr, Jay Paul Gates, Charlene M. Eska, Mary A. Valante, Anthony Adams, Mary E. Leech, Jed Chandler, Ellen Lorraine Friedrich, Robert L.A. Clark, Karin Sellberg, LenaWånggren

Book Engagements with Aim C saire

Download or read book Engagements with Aim C saire written by Jason Allen-Paisant and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-12 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimé Césaire is due a major critical reinterpretation and that is exactly what this book carries out. Through an in-depth grasp of the trajectory and core significance of Césaire's work, Jason Allen-Paisant highlights a set of links it makes between 'spirit,' 'poetry,' and 'knowing'. These explications, setting Césaire's work in relation to a rigorously accounted for set of influences, reframe how we understand his writings, enhancing their philosophical, rather than merely political, aspects. Engagements with Aimé Césaire: Thinking with Spirits is about more than Negritude (which has come to mean something less than a deep poetic sensibility with its own aspirational aesthetics and metaphysics, and rather something more like a fantasy-ridden iteration of pan-Africanism). It shows an Aimé Césaire deeply relevant to today: to the crises of ecological collapse, capitalist dystopias, and ideologies predicated upon fear and the threat of foreigners; and to contemporary chatter around interspecies collaboration and the need to rethink the entrepreneurial subject of Western political thought. Recasting Césaire's work is not just a matter of transforming a significant figure. It is also about rethinking legacies. This book is an engagement in the truest sense—the work of a contemporary Black poet who expounds the ways in which Césaire's work articulates for him a new politics of the self.
