Book excerpt: One of the most amazing 'events' of the last 25 or so years has been the complete transformation of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, their transition from communist rule and central planning to various forms of market-type economy. Ten of the countries have now joined the EU as full members, and for them this accession marks the real end of the Cold War, the end of the postwar divide between East and West. As a professional economist - initially as a PhD student, eventually as an economics professor based in Scotland - I have worked on the region since the late 1960s, travelling to diverse places in many countries, getting to know the people, observing the economic system both under central planning and as it was transformed to a market system. This book is not a technical academic work of the sort I normally write. It is a mix of economic history; short accounts of what I do or have done as a professional economist working in an endlessly fascinating part of the world; and travel tale, since my work has taken me to some quite obscure and not at all well known places. Everything in the book is based on my own observations and experiences, supported in places by extensive background knowledge and reading.

Book Vodka and Pickled Cabbage

Download or read book Vodka and Pickled Cabbage written by Paul Hare and published by New Generation Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many decades, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union lived under communist rule, their economies governed by central planning. Suddenly the Berlin Wall was opened in 1989, the Iron Curtain was torn down; the communist system collapsed and soon the whole region was in a ferment, politically and economically. What happened to industry and businesses in the post-communist era? The travails of transition economics is Professor Hare's chosen subject in this highly informative and delightfully readable economic odyssey. His travels take him all over, from Vorkuta in Northern Russia to Almaty in Kazakhstan and Chisinau in Moldova. In Budapest, St Petersburg and Moscow, we are on more familiar ground: dimly lit hotels, vodka and pickled cabbage, rationed toilet paper and pickpockets... but there are wonderful moments, too, of international hospitality and close encounters of a reconstructionist kind (a banya is great at disinhibiting). Professor Hare's analysis of the emerging market-type economies of the former Soviet bloc, their accession to the EU and the prospects for the CIS countries is superb. An apostle of change, he also explains for the layperson what economists actually do. With a sly dig at academic dirigisme, he unmasks with a deft touch a science which is as protean as the political system it upholds. Here is an academic text with a human face. Paul Hare has been Professor of Economics at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, since 1985. He has researched, travelled in and written about Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union for nearly four decades, and wrote the present book to bring this fascinating region to a wider audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few decades, many of us have become sophisticated about food, but we have not given the same attention to what we drink. In How to Drink, Victoria Moore aims to redress the balance, by showing how to drink well throughout the seasons and at all times of day. She explains how to make the most delicious coffee and juices; how to choose wine that complements your food; and how to make cocktails for every occasion--whether to serve a garden barbecue, as a cold weather aperitif, or just to unwind with at the end of the day. Here are recipes for mint juleps in the spring, sloe gin in the autumn, hot buttered rum in the winter, and year-round showstoppers including the world's best gin and tonic. Moore is also an impassioned advocate of unfairly maligned drinks such as sherry, Campari and saki, and gives fascinating historical background on different spirits as well as invaluable advice on creating your home bar. How to Drink is a hugely readable, browseable and authoritative handbook, whose aim is to inform, entertain and crucially, make sure you can find the right drink at the right time. "It doesn't need to be either difficult or expensive to drink as well as you eat, it just requires a little care..." "A splendid book. Victoria Moore is quite right--it's not how much you drink but how you drink." --Fergus Henderson, chef and co-owner, St. Johns Restaurant "I loved How to Drink. For the first time in years I have broken open a bottle of vodka for a Bloody Mary, remembered how much better mulled cider is than mulled wine, drawn a fresh kettle for tea..." --Joanna Weinberg, author of How to Feed Your Friends with Relish "Anyone who loves their food should heed this unmatchable tutorial in the art of enjoying drink; Victoria Moore succinctly puts every sip in lively context, banishing the guilt from the pleasure of it all." --Rose Prince, author of The New English Kitchen

Having survived a dangerous covert mission in The Devil's Own the man known to his comrades as 'Fancy Jack' now faces new horrors at the Battle of Balaclava. In the confusion of the conflict Jack witnesses the carnage during the hopeless and tragic charge of the Light Brigade when more than six hundred British cavalry troops charged Russian gun emplacements, mistakenly following orders that, as they were passed down the chain of command, had been misinterpreted. Kilworth's rousing narrative of courage on the field and his vivid descriptions of the horrifying realities of the Crimean campaign are related with verve and meticulous historical detail, in the spirit of the great military adventures.

Book The Journals Of A White Sea Wolf

Download or read book The Journals Of A White Sea Wolf written by Mariusz Wilk and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1991 Mariusz Wilk, a Polish journalist long fascinated by the mysteries of the Russian soul, decided to take up residence in the Solovki islands, a lonely archipelago lost amid the far northern reaches of Russia's White Sea. For Wilk these islands represented the quintessence of Russia: a place of exile and a microcosm of the crumbling Soviet empire. On the one hand, they were a cradle of the Orthodox faith and home to an important monastery; on the other, it was here that the first experimental gulag was built after the 1917 revolution. Over the course of years Wilk came to know every single one of the islands' 1000 or so residents. From his remote home, from which he sent regular despatches to the Paris-based Polish newspaper Kultura, he attempted to observe and come to terms with the complexities and contradictions of Russian history, its glorious past and the cruelty of Soviet Communism. In the process, he has written a most unusual travel book, a beautifully descriptive work that belongs in the best tradition of writers such as Norman Lewis, Patrick Leigh Fermor and Claudio Magris.

Thank you comrade!” —Alton Brown From bright pickles to pillowy dumplings, ingenious vodka infusions to traditional homestyle dishes, and varied zakuski to satisfying sweets, Kachka the cookbook covers the vivid world of Russian cuisine. More than 100 recipes show how easy it is to eat, drink, and open your heart in Soviet-inspired style, from the celebrated restaurant that is changing how America thinks about Russian food. The recipes in this book set a communal table with nostalgic Eastern European dishes like Caucasus-inspired meatballs, Porcini Barley Soup, and Cauliflower Schnitzel, and give new and exciting twists to current food trends like pickling, fermentation, and bone broths. Kachka’s recipes and narratives show how Russia’s storied tradition of smoked fish, cultured dairy, and a shot of vodka can be celebratory, elegant, and as easy as meat and potatoes. The food is clear and inviting, rooted in the past yet not at all afraid to play around and wear its punk rock heart on its sleeve.

Book A Ransomed Dissident

    Book Details:
  • Author : Igor Golomstock
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2018-10-25
  • ISBN : 1786724499
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book A Ransomed Dissident written by Igor Golomstock and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1939, a ten-year-old Igor Golomstock accompanied his mother, a medical doctor, to the vast network of labour camps in the Russian Far East. While she tended patients, he was minded by assorted 'trusty' prisoners – hardened criminals – and returned to Moscow an almost feral adolescent, fluent in obscene prison jargon but intellectually ignorant. Despite this dubious start he became a leading art historian and co-author (with his close friend Andrey Sinyavsky) of the first, deeply controversial, monograph on Picasso published in the Soviet Union. His writings on his 43 years in the Soviet Union offer a rare insight into life as a quietly subversive art historian and the post-Stalin dissident community. In vivid prose Golomstock shows the difficulties of publishing, curating and talking about Western art in Soviet Russia and, with self-deprecating humour, the absurd tragicomedy of life for the Moscow intelligentsia during Khruschev's thaw and Brezhnev's stagnation. He also offers a unique personal perspective on the 1966 trial of Sinyavsky and Yuri Daniel, widely considered the end of Khruschev's liberalism and the spark that ignited the Soviet dissident movement. In 1972 he was given 'permission' to leave the Soviet Union, but only after paying a 'ransom' of more than 25 years' salary, nominally intended to reimburse the state for his education. A remarkable collection of artists, scholars and intellectuals in Russia and the West, including Roland Penrose, came together to help him pay this astronomical sum. His memoirs of life once in the UK offer an insider's view of the BBC Russian Service and a penetrating analysis of the notorious feud between Sinyavsky and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Nominated for the Russian Booker Prize on its publication in Russian in 2014, The Ransomed Dissident opens a window onto the life of a remarkable man: a dissident of uncompromising moral integrity and with an outstanding gift for friendship.

Book Last Call for the Dining Car

Download or read book Last Call for the Dining Car written by Michael Kerr and published by Aurum. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Paul Theroux embarked in London on the first train of his Great Railway Bazaar, railways have been a rich source for the best travel writing. This is truer than ever in the twenty-first century. As the environmental implications of relentless air travel cast an ominous shadow over the prospect of foreign adventure, the opportunity to jump on a train at St Pancras and be whisked straight to the continent offers a wonderful alternative. Train travel has assumed a new pragmatic importance as well as romance – which is no doubt why so many more tour companies are offering a great train ride as part of their holiday itineraries. Now, Michael Kerr, the Telegraph’s deputy Travel Editor, has burrowed deep in the newspaper’s archives and collected together the very best of its writings about the railway: here are journeys non-stop from London to Vladivostok; across the Canadian Rockies; the first train to traverse Australia from Darwin to Alice Springs; and on the teeming, crawling, travelling adventure of Indian railways. In scenes much more familiar to the British commuter, Boris Johnson discovers his “inner McEnroe” thanks to signal failure in the Midlands, and Michael Palin samples the delights of British Rail Inter-City. This is an anthology that will appeal to the railway buff and the armchair traveller alike; to anyone who has ever Inter-railed in their youth and everyone nostalgic for the days when the only way to cross a continent was by train.
