Book excerpt: Legal lexicography or jurilexicography is the most neglected aspect of the discipline of jurilinguistics, despite its great relevance for translators, academics and comparative lawyers. This volume seeks to bridge this gap in legal literature by bringing together contributions from ten jurisdictions from leading experts in the field. The work addresses aspects of legal lexicography, both monolingual and bilingual, in its various manifestations in both civilian and common law systems. It thus compares epistemic approaches in a subject that is inextricably bound up with specific legal systems and specific languages. Topics covered include the history of French legal lexicography, ordinary language as defined by the courts, the use of law dictionaries by the judiciary, legal lexicography and translation, and a proposed multilingual dictionary for the EU citizen. While the majority of contributions are in English, the volume includes three written in French. The collection will be a valuable resource for both scholars and practitioners engaging with language in the mechanism of the law.

Book Les Cadiens et leurs anc tres acadiens

Download or read book Les Cadiens et leurs anc tres acadiens written by Shane K. Bernard and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cajuns and Their Acadian Ancestors: A Young Reader's History traces the four-hundred-year history of this distinct American ethnic group. In its original English, the book proved a perfect package, comprehensible to junior-high and high-school students, while appealing to and informing adult readers seeking a one-volume exploration of these remarkable people and their predecessors. It is now available for the first time translated into French. The narrative follows the Cajuns' early ancestors, the Acadians, from seventeenth-century France to Nova Scotia, where they flourished until British soldiers expelled them in a tragic event called Le Grand Dérangement (The Great Upheaval)—an episode regarded by many historians as an instance of ethnic cleansing or genocide. Up to one-half of the Acadian population died from disease, starvation, exposure, or outright violence in the expulsion. Nearly three thousand survivors journeyed through the thirteen American colonies to Spanish-controlled Louisiana. There they resettled, intermarried with members of the local population, and evolved into the Cajun people, who today number over a half-million. Since their arrival in Louisiana, the Cajuns have developed an unmistakable identity and a strong sense of ethnic pride. In recent decades they have contributed their lively cuisine and accordion-and-fiddle dance music to American popular culture. Les Cadiens et leurs ancêtres acadiens: l'histoire racontée aux jeunes includes numerous images and over a dozen sidebars on topics ranging from Cajun music and horse racing heroes to Mardi Gras. Shane K. Bernard's welcomed and cherished history of the Cajun people is translated into French by Faustine Hillard. The book offers a long-sought immersion text, ideal for the young learner and adult alike. Intended to appeal to both native French-speakers as well as to English-speaking students who are learning French, this French translation of Shane K. Bernard's Cajuns and Their Acadian Ancestors: A Young Reader's History is perfect for middle-school and high-school readers enrolled in conversational and French Immersion classes. Adult readers of French will also find it a useful primer of Acadian and Cajun history.

Book Analyse Comparative Des Objectifs D apprentissage de Quatre Programmes D enseignement de Base Du Fruneais Langue Seconde Au Canada Comparative Analysis of the Learning Objectives of Four French as a Second Language Teaching Programs in Canada Publication B 185

Download or read book Analyse Comparative Des Objectifs D apprentissage de Quatre Programmes D enseignement de Base Du Fruneais Langue Seconde Au Canada Comparative Analysis of the Learning Objectives of Four French as a Second Language Teaching Programs in Canada Publication B 185 written by Lucie Giasson and published by Centre international de recherche en aménagement linguistique = International Center for Research on Language Planning. This book was released on 1992 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of their responsibilities and specific contexts in matters of teaching core French as a second language, the Canadian provinces sometimes face common problems such as having to adapt a single program to various schools when the level of basic knowledge of students of French varies. Several original solutions easily adaptable to other provinces are presented. The limited channels of information restrict the sharing of resources and experience. This research could contribute to the improvement of interprovincial dialogue because it aims at a comparative analysis of four official core French programs as second language programs used in Canada in 1989. The elements compared are the learning objectives qualified by De Landsheere and De Landsheere as "the key to the method of curriculum development." The analysis grid of objectives conceived by D'Hainaut has been adapted and applied to the objectives of the programs of British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario, in order to bring out their specific characteristics, resemblances, and differences. Download or read book R le des cong n res interlinguaux dans le d veloppement du vocabulaire r ceptif written by Marie-Claude Tréville and published by Centre international de recherche en aménagement linguistique = International Center for Research on Language Planning. This book was released on 1993 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the effects of systematic use of similarities between the native and second languages on the lexical competence of second language learners. Subjects were 209 first- and second-year English-speaking university students in French language classes. The students were pre- and post-tested for their visual recognition of cognates and grammatical inflections out of context, transfer and application of lexical rules across languages, identification of grammatical categories out of context and in limited contexts, derivation of French words, text comprehension, and appropriate use of given cognates. Six first-year and six second-year experimental groups and a like number of control groups were formed. Experimental groups were exposed to systematic instruction in cognates in the course of regular instruction; control groups were not. Analysis of the results suggest that such systematic, guided study of interlingual cognates improved receptive vocabulary in all areas tested. The study and its results are reported in detail. Appended materials include a 238-item bibliography, the seven-lesson cognate curriculum used with the experimental group, French lexical reference lists and tables, and the pre- and post-test.
