Book Association Between VLF Emissions and Flickering Aurora

Download or read book Association Between VLF Emissions and Flickering Aurora written by Stanford University. Stanford Electronics Laboratories and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a VLF experiment at Fairbanks, Alaska, an unusual chorus type of emission with a warbling or fluttering sound was heard on four different occasions. An example of the spectrum of the emission is presented which shows a series of bursts in the 1000- to 1800-cps range. Some of the bursts, which last for 1 to 3 sec, show a welldeveloped fine structure with several sharply rising tones at irregular spacing, each lasting about 0.1 sec. The emission bursts were associated with active periods in the aurora where groups of flashes or flickerings took place and, in the opinion of the observer, each of the short, sharply rising tones was associated with a flash in the aurora. Also presented is a band of hiss in the 600- to 1200-cps range.

Book Source Variation and Ground Accessibility of Magnetospheric Mid latitude ELF VLF Chorus and Hiss

Download or read book Source Variation and Ground Accessibility of Magnetospheric Mid latitude ELF VLF Chorus and Hiss written by Daniel Irving Golden and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution of relativistic electrons that form the Earth's radiation belts is extremely variable, with the trapped flux changing by several orders of magnitude on timescales of a few hours to days. These energetic particles pose a significant hazard to satellites and astronauts in the near-Earth space environment. The dynamic evolution of the radiation belts is believed to be controlled in large part by two separate but related classes of naturally occurring plasma waves: extremely low frequency/very low frequency (ELF/VLF) chorus and hiss. This dissertation explores characteristics of chorus and hiss observed at Palmer Station, Antarctica with the goal of improving our ability to differentiate between variations in emission generation and the effects of emissions' propagation to the ground. Results are presented from a two-part study, consisting of both observations and modeling, which explores the manner in which the plasmapause affects the propagation of chorus from its magnetospheric source to the ground. Results indicate that the observed chorus propagates in a non-ducted mode, which is contrary to a long-standing belief that guiding structures are necessary for chorus to propagate to the ground. This newly-explored mode of ground propagation indicates that ground stations may be able to observe a larger portion of waves than previously thought and provides for a more accurate interpretation of ground-observed waves and their influence on energetic particle distributions. Following this, an automated system of detecting chorus and hiss in broadband ELF/VLF data using neural networks is discussed. Results of running the automated detector on ten years of data are discussed including diurnal, seasonal and solar cyclical variations of emissions.

Book Observation of VLF Phenomena Inside the Auroral Zone

Download or read book Observation of VLF Phenomena Inside the Auroral Zone written by Daniel W. Swift and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the results of a three-year program of observations and analysis of very low frequency (VLF) radio emissions in the auroral zone. The particular VLF emissions which are the subject of the study are VLF hiss, VLF chorus and extra low frequency (ELF) hiss. All of these emissions occur in the audio frequency range, and the nomenclature of these various emissions is derived from the sounds generated when the undetected signal is fed into a loudspeaker. Book Some Relationships Between Aurora and Natural VLF and LF Noise at Plateau Station Antarctica

Download or read book Some Relationships Between Aurora and Natural VLF and LF Noise at Plateau Station Antarctica written by Stanford University. Stanford Electronics Laboratories and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various relationships between aurora as observed in all-sky photographs and natural noise at frequencies of 1.5, 8, 50, and 110 kHz are found from data taken at Plateau Station, Antarctica, during the austral winter of 1966. The investigation is carried out in two parts: diurnal variations in occurrence are found for aurora and noise, and a minute-by-minute examination of relationships is made for a one-week period. Diurnal occurrence of noise at 110 kHz peaks before magnetic midnight at about the same time as a peak occurs in the more familiar diurnal curves of occurrence of noise at 8 kHz and of aurora. Examples are shown of several events in which associations between variations in noise and variations in auroral elevation, intensity, form, and rate of change can be found from detailed comparison of the data. The majority of all noise changes during the week is found to coincide with changes in the aurora. (Author).

Book Low Frequency Waves and Irregularities in the Ionosphere

Download or read book Low Frequency Waves and Irregularities in the Ionosphere written by N. D'Angelo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last week of September 1968, ESRIN (the European Space Research Institute) held the ESRIN-ESLAB Symposium on 'Low-Frequency Waves and Irregularities in the Ionosphere' in Frascati, near Rome. The symposium was attended by about 60 participants, including speakers from most of the ESRO member states, the U.S.A., the U.S.S.R., and Peru. The main topics covered were: (a) observations of ionospheric irregularities by radar scattering, (b) scintillations of satellite signals, (c) geomagnetic micropulsations, and (d) whistlers. Both theoretical and observational aspects were treated. In addition, laboratory results on low-frequency waves in plasmas were discussed, emphasis being given to their possible relevance to low-frequency ionospheric phenomena. Finally, a brief presentation (not included in these proceedings) of the ESRO rocket and satellite program was given by Dr. Pedersen of ESLAB. The symposium provided an exchange of information among workers in closely related fields. It was also valuable in bringing together people whose experience is predominantly in ionospheric observations with others whose field of interest is mainly in plasma physics (theoretical or laboratory) - a combination that seemed particularly appropriate to ESRIN's program and functions.
