Book excerpt: Vivian Grey Volume 2 By Benjamin Disraeli Originally published anonymously, ostensibly by a so-called "man of fashion," the first part caused a considerable sensation in London society. Contemporary reviewers, suspicious of the numerous solecisms contained within the text, eventually identified the young Disraeli (who did not move in high society) as the author. The book is a frequent touchstone for discussions of Disraeli's political and literary career. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: First published in 1966, Robert Blake's biography of Disraeli is one of the supreme political biographies of the last hundred years. An outsider, a nationalist, a European, a Romantic and a Tory - Disraeli's story is an extraordinary one. Born in 1804, the grandson of an immigrant Italian Jew, he became leader of the Conservative Party and was twice Prime Minister. Famous for the 1867 Reform Act, his purchasing of the Suez Canal and his diplomatic triumphs at the Congress of Berlin, he was also the creator of the political novel and, in Sybil, wrote the major 'Condition of England' work of fiction. 'An outstandingly successful biography . . . Disraeli has never been brought so vividly to life.' Sir Philip Magnus, Daily Telegraph 'A huge, scholarly and remarkably readable work which makes us revise vast tracts of our assumptions about nineteenth-century politics.' Sir Michael Howard, Sunday Times 'A book that people will still be reading in fifty years' time and long after.' Times Literary Supplement

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vivian Grey, Vol. 1 of 2 The Young Duke or Henrietta Temple. Even Dis raeli's satiric squibs, in the manner of Lucian and Swift, which seem to us among the most durable ornaments of light literature in the days of William IV., were read and were laughed at, but were not critically appraised. So, too, at the middle period of Disraeli's literary life, such books as Com'ngsby and Tancred were looked upon as amusing commentaries on the prog ress of a strenuous politician, not by any means, or by any responsible person, as possible classics of our language. And at his third period, the ruling criti cism of the hour was aghast at faults which now entertain us, and was blind to sterling merits which we are now ready to acknowledge. Shortly after his death, perhaps his most brilliant apologist was fain to admit that if Disraeli had been undistinguished as a speaker, his novels would have been as the flowers of the field, charming for the day which was passing over them, and then forgotten. It is only within the last decade that a conviction has been gaining ground that some of these books were in themselves durable, not because they were the work of a man who be came Prime Minister of England and made his sover eign Empress of India, but as much or as little as if they had been composed by a recluse in a hermitage. This impression has now become so general with en lightened critics that the danger seems to be that we should underrate certain excesses of rhetoric and the Corinthian mode, the errors of which used to be over emphasized, but should not, in a comparative survey of Victorian literature, be overlooked as serious draw backs to our perfect enjoyment of the high-spirited. Book The Social Novel in England 1830 1850 RLE Dickens

Download or read book The Social Novel in England 1830 1850 RLE Dickens written by Louis Cazamian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first English translation of Le Roman social en Angleterre by Louis Cazamian, which is widely recognized as the classic survey of Victorian social fiction. Starting from the eighteenth century, Cazamian traces the ways in which rationalism and romanticism intertwined and competed, particularly in relation to radical political philosophy. He shows how industrialization polarized England, setting the industrial bourgeoisie in the van of progress in the first decades of the nineteenth century, until their political and economic triumph stirred up a passionate reaction against them. This reaction propelled novelists such as Charles Dickens who lies at the centre of his discussion. For this translation Martin Fido has provided a substantial foreword, and has revised and completed the bibliographical references and corrected the footnotes to assist the present-day reader.
