This book was released on 2022-12-14 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the complex relationship between religion and business in twentieth-century America. It is the story of how Christianity’s most basic institution, the local church, wrestled with the challenges and compromises of competing in the modern marketplace through adopting the advertising, public relations, and marketing methods of business. It follows these sacred promoters, and their critics, as they navigated between divinely inspired and consumer demanded. Amid an animated and contentious battleground for principles, practices and parishioners, John C. Hardin explores the landscape of selling religion in America and its evolution over the twentieth century.

Book The Professionalization of Pastoral Care

Download or read book The Professionalization of Pastoral Care written by T. Dale Johnson Jr. and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the organization and structure of the church in America was altered in the early 1900s to meet modern demands, the role of the pastorate became more specialized to adapt to the burdens of the new, "efficient" structure. In 1920, Gaines Dobbins utilized the business efficiency model at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary to formulate a distinct ecclesiology. Discontent with traditional methods of instruction in theological education, Dobbins sought to implement theories and methodologies from modern educationalists. He adopted a psychologized educational methodology and utilized the psychology of religion as an empirical measure of the soul, human nature, and human behavior. Use of the social sciences seemed to grant Dobbins, as a practitioner, academic respectability within the realm of theological education. Both the professionalization that resulted from Dobbins's efficiency standards, and a working theory of human nature derived from psychological models, were synthesized into a specialized system of pastoral care. Dobbins followed the new shape of pastoral theology in America, adopting Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) as the model for pastoral training. As a result, CPE became an integral part of the curriculum at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary for over sixty years, and spread to influence many other SBC entities.

Book excerpt: The mission and purpose of a church needs to reflect the current context for which it is called and located. Fifty years ago was a high growth period as many churches were established, populated and developed within the suburban housing boom expecially outside of Los Angeles in the mid-sixties. While the demographics of suburban communities have changed, and young families have grown older, suburban churches have hung onto the same style and habits of ministrry that shaped its identity. For a church to re-envision God's future and its calling for a new day, it needs to develop new habits for intentional and directed mission as opposed to reacting to the latest concern with no long term plan. This project uses Appreciative Inquity to set mission goals based upon the strenths God has gifted the congretation. System and group processes are implemented to empower forward thinking that takes advantage of the church's strengths and where the church needs to develop skills to be ready for ongoing changes that will continue to rapidly occur. Appreciative Inquity is the method utilized to aid the congregation to tell its own story and discover its identity. This happens through an all-church one-day retreat to involve the whole church. This is followed by the compilation of data gathered at the retreat, a summary report, and dialogue groups that use the data to creatively design and implement innovative proposals for the future. This process is to engage and inspire the congregation to discover where God is leading. AI helps shape the pattern of conversation toward the positive, strenghts, and the ways the church has been at its best. It is not a process of "problem solving" but highlighting the story of the church based on successes rather than failures; to appreciate the gifts of this church community in its history and present context. This will then help the church to create an accurate picture to use as a backdrop for the current issues facing the church, and innovative approaches for the future. This project initiated new approaches for this church to vision the future. It describes and evaluates five creative proposals (experiments) that were based on the information gathered from the conversations within the congregation. The members of the church felt free to experiment and even risk failure within a lesser area of impact rather than an overwhelming number of changes. This project helped the church gain confidence to handle change for the future. However, it was discovered that AI did not provide the framework for change starategies. The church did develop a better sense of identity and strengh, but then fell into the default pattern by seeking "fixes" for problems rather than developing ways to make adaptations to the changes happening around them. This has led to launching a new program to redefine the mission of the church.

Download or read book Meeting Jesus the Christ Again written by Robert Chesnut and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The religion of Jesus or the religion about Jesus? The cross as Christ's atoning sacrifice or as a courageous, prophetic martyrdom? With a pastoral/prophetic voice and insights derived from a lifetime in parish ministry and theological education, Meeting Jesus the Christ Again encourages the reader to rethink these and other hotly disputed issues of Christian faith. Taking a big-picture perspective and seeking common ground, Chesnut points us toward a "neo-classical" faith. This engaging book calls us back to the vital center of historic Christian faith.

Book A Study on Alternatives for Next Generation Through Vitalizing Family Worship

Download or read book A Study on Alternatives for Next Generation Through Vitalizing Family Worship written by Eun Jick Cha and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis aims to highlight the necessity of family worship for the succession of the next generation's faith by studying the effect of the revitalization of family worship on the transmission of faith to the next generation. The growth of Korean churches in the past has grown so rapidly that it is hard to find in the history of churches around the world. However, despite the fact that there are various forms of worship and training programs, in the 21st century, Korean churches are experiencing a slowdown in church growth along with the stagnation of Sunday School. There may be various causes, but one of the causes is the negligence of family worship, which can be seen as the basis for teaching and transmitting the Word in the home. This researcher analyzes and synthesizes programs for revitalization of family worship and family worship conducted by churches including one church centering on Daegil Church, as well as conducting family worship for the transmission of faith to the next generation. It focused on providing family worship. This study aims to inform the Korean churches of the need and effective family worship, and suggests what directly affects the transmission of faith to the next generation through family worship.
