Book Spiritual Temporalities in Late Medieval Europe

Download or read book Spiritual Temporalities in Late Medieval Europe written by Michael Foster and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, many take for granted that time is quantifiable and measurable; did the people of medieval Europe feel the same way? How was their perception of time influenced by their religious faith? How did their faith change over time? This book collects various attempts to trace changes to perceptions of time throughout medieval Europe by examining both how time was a spiritual experience for medieval people and how spiritual experiences changed over time in the Middle Ages. The essays in this volume demonstrate from a variety of perspectives that Christian faith was extremely malleable in the late-medieval period, and that various artists, scribes, and writers negotiated with their spiritual tradition. These are the “spiritual temporalities” of the medieval world, and by studying them we gain an understanding of how medieval culture was a dynamic gathering of different voices, movements, and beliefs, which constantly influenced and changed one another.

Book Merlin and Legendary Romance

Download or read book Merlin and Legendary Romance written by Carol Harding and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indepth work on the origins of the Merlin of Arthurian legend, this book examines early texts, thirteenth century romances focusing particularly on Merlin as a character, rather than those where Merlin is a background cast member. The outline here starts with looking at the genre and the place of fantasy, moving on to consider the attitudes towards magic and magic-users in medieval times. Main works considered are Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae and Vita Merlini; the Vulgate cycle, Suite du Merlin; and finally Malory’s work. The author asserts that each portrays a different approach to Merlin but all are tied to history and to the Christian religion.

Book St Katherine of Alexandria

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medievalists from the US and Britain examine evidence of the third- century saint's popularity across Europe throughout the Middle Ages, and suggest some reasons for it. Prominent questions they address are whether she was popular because she was powerful, or powerful because she was popular; and what made her image so much more open than that of other saints to appropriation by such a variety of medieval saints. The ten essays are from international gatherings in Kalamazoo and Leeds in 1999. Distributed in the US by The David Brown Book Company.
