Book excerpt: The turbulent mixing layer between two streams of different velocities continues to play a central role in research aimed at improved understanding of turbulent shear flows in general. At present, not all researchers are in agreement as to what various experiments imply about the structure of mixing layers at high Reynolds number. The views which are held differ on the question as to how and to what extent three dimensionality develops in these flows and whether the characteristic spanwise organized large vortex structures (rollers) continue to be a dominant feature. The traditional view, as extended to the contemporary scene, is that ultimately (i.e., sufficiently far downstream or at sufficiently high Reynolds number) the flow will be completely disorganized. The view put forward by 'eddy chasers' is that such vortex structures are primary elements, characteristic of the underlying mean vorticity field, which is particularly simple for the mixing layer, and that, as long as the velocity difference is maintained, there is a mechanism to regenerate these primary structures by what, for convenience, may be called a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The heart of the controversy then is whether, or to what extent, secondary and higher instabilities will ultimately break down, completely disorganize or prevent formation of organized primary structures. In a plane mixing layer, the primary structures would, ideally, be two dimensional, containing the basic single component of vorticity while secondary and higher modes of instability would introduce three dimensionality and the other two components of vorticity into the flow. Book excerpt: In the last 25 years, one of the most striking advances in Fluid Mecha nics was certainly the discovery of coherent structures in turbulence: lab oratory experiments and numerical simulations have shown that most turbulent flows exhibit both spatially-organized large-scale structures and disorganized motions, generally at smaller scales. The develop ment of new measurement and visualization techniques have allowed a more precise characterization and investigation of these structures in the laboratory. Thanks to the unprecedented increase of computer power and to the development of efficient interactive three-dimensional colour graphics, computational fluid dynamicists can explore the still myste rious world of turbulence. However, many problems remain unsolved concerning the origin of these structures, their dynamics, and their in teraction with the disorganized motions. In this book will be found the latest results of experimentalists, theoreticians and numerical modellers interested in these topics. These coherent structures may appear on airplane wings or slender bodies, mixing layers, jets, wakes or boundary-layers. In free-shear flows and in boundary layers, the results presented here highlight the intense three-dimensional character of the vortices. The two-dimensional large scale eddies are very sensitive to three-dimensional perturbations, whose amplification leads to the formation of three-dimensional coherent vorti cal structures, such as streamwise, hairpin or horseshoe vortex filaments. This book focuses on modern aspects of turbulence study. Relations between turbulence theory and optimal control theory in mathematics are discussed. This may have important applications with regard to, e. g. , numerical weather forecasting.

Book excerpt: This program focused on fundamental investigations of mixing, chemical-reaction, and combustion processes, in turbulent, subsonic, and supersonic free-shear flows. The program was comprised of an experimental effort; an analytical, modeling, and computational effort; and a diagnostics, instrumentation, and data-acquisition-development effort, with significant progress in each. With regard to gas-phase shear-layer mixing and combustion, effects of inflow/initial conditions, compressibility, and Reynolds number were experimentally investigated and, to a large extent, clarified. New measures to characterize level sets in turbulence were developed and successfully employed to characterize experimental data of liquid-phase turbulent-jet flows as well as three-dimensional direct-numerical-simulation data of Rayleigh-Taylor-instability flows. The computational effort has added to our understanding of the (H2+NO)/F2 chemical system employed in the shear-layer-mixing investigations as well as mixing in high-speed flows, along with further developments in Riemann-Invariant-Manifold gasdynamic simulation techniques and their application to unsteady detonation phenomena. On the diagnostic front, developments in digital imaging and Image Correlation Velocimetry have continued, and been used to investigate turbulent-jet mixing, the unsteady flow over an accelerating airfoil, to mitigate aliasing problems in the computer reconstruction of (2+1)-dimensional isosurface data, and in other applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental studies have been conducted in a curved mixing layer in which both the velocity ratio and the density ratio were variable. Flow visualization studies and profile measurements covered a wide range of experimental conditions. The structures observed experimentally were examined in the light of three different instability mechanisms which can exist in the same mean flow. For the case of mixing layers with uniform density, it was found that the normal large spanwise vortex structures can be weakened or inhibited by Taylor-Goertler instability if the inner stream is faster than the outer stream. For the case of mixing layers with different densities, three-dimensionality is greatly enhanced by Rayleigh-Taylor instability if the inner stream is heavier than the outer stream, and especially if the inner stream is also faster. In the former case the growth rate of the mixing layer was found to be insensitive to changes in the velocity ratio. The effects of curvature on the structure of the curved turbulent mixing layer were explored in terms of length scales and celerity for the large spanwise structures where these structures could be observed. Other things being equal, the celerity of the large structres was found to depend on density ratio and velocity ratio but not on the sense of the mean streamline curvature. (Author).
