Book Visual Geography of California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Visual Geography of California Classic Reprint written by Herbert Edward Floercky and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Visual Geography of California Many hardy adventurers have come to California in their search for new lands, and the romantic story of their travels and hardships are mat ters that every dweller in this state will find of interest. The early dis coverers came by way of the sea, but after the discovery of gold all manner ner of men came overland. California's rich underground lakes of oil and the great numbers of persons who were attracted by the lure of acquiring fortunes in the oil fields have added another epoch to the history of this far western state. 'the 'climate, too, has been a source of attraction for people from colder parts of the world. This book attempts to tell some of the most important facts about California and the bearing these have had on the development of the state. Pictures, maps, charts, and graphs have been freely used in an effort to concentrate much information in a small space. Two types of graphs or charts are used. If the similarity between the circular graphs and a pie is pointed out to the children they will readily grasp the relationship between the slices and the whole and thus between the objects of com parison. Download or read book Rediscovering the Golden State written by William A. Selby and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its fourth edition, Rediscovering the Golden State: California Geography examines this unique state’s incredibly diverse landscapes, and how geography and geographic change influences everything from the state’s natural systems and cycles, to its agriculture and more advanced industries, to human migration, cultures, and urban planning. Exploring California through a geographic lens reveals how the field has evolved to cross traditional boundaries, connect local and global issues, and provide the insights that lead to practical solutions to problems new and old. Challenging the reader to look beyond stereotypes and assumptions, this book encourages active participation in planning the state’s dynamic future. And this project makes teaching and learning about the geography of California more convenient, exciting, and rewarding for instructors and students. Going beyond a scientific analysis of natural features and environmental processes, this book illustrates how social, political, and economic divides can be bridged through the study of geography and the connections it brings to light. From geology, weather and climate, biogeography, and hydrology, we cover the state’s physical geography. And from demography and migration, to cultures and economies, to rural and urban geography, we monitor the state’s human geography pulse and then make the vital connections. California continues to lead the nation in population, economics (5th largest in the world), agriculture, natural and cultural diversity, and a host of other categories. This powerful state has earned this powerful publication. This timely and versatile book will prove useful to Californians in business, education, government, and to concerned citizens and curious readers seeking to learn more about the Golden State.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Site-specific art installations are artworks intended and often designed for a specific space, which aid in the transformation of that space to a notable destination or place. The goal of this research is to explore this unique type of art in terms of locational patterning and placement within desert communities in Southern California. Due to the strong location-based aspect of this type of art along with its interconnectivity with the local culture, the space-to-place shift that site-specific art brings to the area leads to establishing pull factors for visitors as well as allowing for a centralized point of interest for local communities and tourism. This particular type of art begins to create a destination characteristic, local pride, area engagement, and in turn, regional stimulus. It also develops points of interest that may draw year-round visitors to local attractions and amenities in areas that may otherwise have seasonally dependent tourism economies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "The Mountains of California (With Original Drawings & Photographs)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Mountains of California is John Muir's tribute to the beauties of the Sierra, in the book form. When he came to California and finally settled in San Francisco, John Muir immediately left for a visit to Yosemite, a place he had only read about. Seeing it for the first time, Muir noted that "He was overwhelmed by the landscape, scrambling down steep cliff faces to get a closer look at the waterfalls, whooping and howling at the vistas, jumping tirelessly from flower to flower." He climbed a number of mountains, including Cathedral Peak and Mount Dana, and hiked the old Indian trail down Bloody Canyon to Mono Lake. He vividly described not only his journeys through the mountains, valleys andglaciersof Sierra, but also the nature and geology of the area. John Muir (1838 - 1914) was a Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, have been read by millions. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he founded, is a prominent American conservation organization.

Download or read book The Left Coast written by Philip L. Fradkin and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2011-06-21 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip L. Fradkin, one of California’s most acclaimed environmental historians, felt drawn to the coast as soon as he arrived in California in 1960. His first book, California: The Golden Coast, captured the wonder of the shoreline’s natural beauty along with the controversies it engendered. In The Left Coast, the author and his photographer son Alex Fradkin revisit some of the same places they explored together in the early 1970s. From their written and visual approaches, this father-son team brings a unique generational perspective to the subject. Mixing history, geography, interviews, personal experiences, and photographs, they find a wealth of stories and memorable sights in the multiplicity of landscapes, defined by them as the Wild, Agricultural, Residential, Tourist, Recreational, Industrial, Military, and Political coasts. Alex Fradkin’s expressive photographs add a layer of meaning, enriching the subject with their distinctive eloquence while bringing a visual dimension to his father’s words. In this way, the book becomes the story of a close relationship within a probing study of a varied and contested coastline.
