Declines in memory and decision-making abilities may trigger fears of Alzheimer's disease or other neurodegenerative diseases. However, cognitive aging is a natural process that can have both positive and negative effects on cognitive function in older adults - effects that vary widely among individuals. At this point in time, when the older population is rapidly growing in the United States and across the globe, it is important to examine what is known about cognitive aging and to identify and promote actions that individuals, organizations, communities, and society can take to help older adults maintain and improve their cognitive health. Cognitive Aging assesses the public health dimensions of cognitive aging with an emphasis on definitions and terminology, epidemiology and surveillance, prevention and intervention, education of health professionals, and public awareness and education. This report makes specific recommendations for individuals to reduce the risks of cognitive decline with aging. Aging is inevitable, but there are actions that can be taken by individuals, families, communities, and society that may help to prevent or ameliorate the impact of aging on the brain, understand more about its impact, and help older adults live more fully and independent lives. Cognitive aging is not just an individual or a family or a health care system challenge. It is an issue that affects the fabric of society and requires actions by many and varied stakeholders. Cognitive Aging offers clear steps that individuals, families, communities, health care providers and systems, financial organizations, community groups, public health agencies, and others can take to promote cognitive health and to help older adults live fuller and more independent lives. Ultimately, this report calls for a societal commitment to cognitive aging as a public health issue that requires prompt action across many sectors.

Book excerpt: The Neural Theory of Visual Attention of Bundesen, Habekost, and Kyllingsbæk (2005) was proposed as a neural interpretation of Bundesen’s (1990) theory of visual attention (TVA). In NTVA, visual attention functions via two mechanisms: by dynamic remapping of receptive fields of cortical cells such that more cells are devoted to behaviorally important objects than to less important ones (filtering) and by multiplicative scaling of the level of activation in cells coding for particular features (pigeonholing). NTVA accounts for a wide range of known attentional effects in human performance and a wide range of effects observed in firing rates of single cells in the primate visual system and thus provides a mathematical framework to unify the 2 fields of research. In this Research Topic of Frontiers in Psychology, some of the leading theories of visual attention at both the cognitive, neuropsychological, and neurophysiological levels are presented and evaluated. Impaired perception, such as that resulting from hearing loss or reduced visual or tactile resolution, increases demands on ‘higher-level’ cognitive functions to cope or compensate. It is possible, for example, to use focused attention to overcome perceptual limitations. Unfortunately, cognitive functions also decline in old age. This can mean that perceptual impairments are exacerbated by cognitive decline, and vice versa, but also means that interventions aimed at one type of decline can lead to improvements in the other. Just as improved cognition can ameliorate perceptual deficits, improving the stimulus can help offset cognitive deficits. For example, making directions and routes easy to follow can help compensate for declines in navigation abilities. In this Topic, we bring together papers from both auditory and visual researchers that address the interaction between perception and cognition in the ageing brain. Many of the studies demonstrate that a broadening of representations or increased reliance on gist underlie perceptual and cognitive age-related declines. There is also clear evidence that impaired perception is associated with poor cognition although, encouragingly, it can also be seen that good perception is associated with better cognition. Compensatory cognitive strategies were less successful in improving perception than might be expected. We also present papers which highlight important methodological considerations that are required when studying the older brain.

Emerging evidence that the prevalence of dementia is declining in high-income countries offers hope that public health interventions will be effective in preventing or delaying cognitive impairments. Until recently, the research and clinical communities have focused primarily on understanding and treating these conditions after they have developed. Thus, the evidence base on how to prevent or delay these conditions has been limited at best, despite the many claims of success made in popular media and advertising. Today, however, a growing body of prevention research is emerging. Preventing Cognitive Decline and Dementia: A Way Forward assesses the current state of knowledge on interventions to prevent cognitive decline and dementia, and informs future research in this area. This report provides recommendations of appropriate content for inclusion in public health messages from the National Institute on Aging.

A rapid serial visual processing (RSVP) task was adapted from Li et al. (2002). Twelve participants (N=6 young, 6=old) completed 4 sessions across two weeks. Results verified that older adults manage attentional capacity by achieving global precedence in visual processing. Indeed, older adults showed a larger global precedence effect than did younger adults. Animal trials (whole objects) from natural scenes (Task 1) aided accuracy of letter discrimination (Task 2) in a dual task scenario, but no such advantage occurred for component features of geometric shapes. In lieu of these findings the decision complexity advantage theory is discussed in which greater processing efficiency can be achieved through the use of progressively larger perceptual units of analysis. This suggests a compensatory model for age maintenance in higher order visual processing despite age-related sensory and motor declines. Quite simply, it appears that a large part of what we think of as skill is really learning to use larger perceptual units ("chunking"), and that over the life span, older adults become progressively better at chunking perceptual information.

An important scientific problem is that cognitive control is disrupted in aging and a variety of clinical conditions, including clinically asymptomatic cerebrovascular disease (CVD), but we only have limited evidence and understanding of the mechanisms underlying these processes. We know based on previous evidence that CVD can impact cognitive control through white matter injury along connections of the frontal lobe with its network targets, leading to further cognitive dysfunction. To examine relations between age, CVD and cognitive control, we investigated the effects of white matter injury on measures of processing speed (a resource to cognitive control) and visual attentional control (a component of cognitive control). Previous research suggests that white matter injury is associated with differences in processing speed, which may affect the function of distributed networks, and that visual attention mechanisms utilize a distributed frontal-parietal network, connected by white matter tracts often affected by age-related vascular injury. White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are one measure of CVD-related white matter injury, and the contributions of WMH to age-related cognitive deficits were examined here by determining behavioral and brain functional characteristics of older adult individuals with varied WMH volume, compared to young adult controls, on tasks tapping processing speed and search performance. We found that age and white matter injury were associated with search performance differences independent from perceptual processing speed differences, and were also associated with dysfunctional activation of frontal-parietal regions important to attentional control, and with altered attention network functional connectivity, in support of dedifferentiation models described in the cognitive aging literature. This systems-based approach to the study of white matter damage is part of a systematic approach to understand the role of white matter integrity and cognitive differences in aging and CVD, which may provide insight into one of the mechanisms of normal cognitive aging. As CVD-related white matter changes may be preventable and treatable, identification of cognitive aging mechanisms is a first step towards developing interventions to prevent damage to white matter tracts and sustain cognitive health.
