Book excerpt: With the smart suspense of Emma Donoghue’s Room and the atmospheric claustrophobia of Grey Gardens, this “bizarrely unsettling, yet compulsively readable” (Iain Reid, internationally bestselling author of I’m Thinking of Ending Things) thriller explores the twisted realities that can lurk beneath even the most serene of surfaces. What becomes of a child who grows up without love? Marion Zetland lives with her domineering older brother John in a crumbling mansion on the edge of a northern seaside resort. A timid spinster in her fifties who still sleeps with teddy bears, Marion does her best to live by John’s rules, even if it means turning a blind eye to the noises she hears coming from behind the cellar door...and to the women’s laundry in the hamper that isn’t hers. For years, she’s buried the signs of John’s devastating secret into the deep recesses of her mind—until the day John is crippled by a heart attack, and Marion becomes the only one whose shoulders are fit to bear his secret. Forced to go down to the cellar and face what her brother has kept hidden, Marion discovers more about herself than she ever thought possible. As the truth is slowly unraveled, we finally begin to understand: maybe John isn’t the only one with a dark side....

So when a mysterious man and his daughter move into isolated Dog Cottage, Flora is curious. What could have brought these strangers to the island? The man is seductive but radiates menace, while Flo finds a kindred spirit in his daughter, Ailsa. Meanwhile, several of the men on Bancree have disappeared, unnerving the community. When a body washes ashore, suspicion turns to the newcomers. But Flo suspects something else, even though it seems impossible: She asks local residents for anything they know about”selkies,” the mythical women who can turn from seal to human and back again. Convinced of her new neighbors’ innocence, Flo is fiercely determined to protect her friend Ailsa. Can the answer to the disappearances, and to the pull of her own heart, lie out there, beyond the waves?

Book Visitors to Ancient America

Download or read book Visitors to Ancient America written by William F. McNeil and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers in American anthropology and archaeology from the late seventeenth century to the present--including Cotton Mather, John Wesley Powell, Thor Heyerdahl, and Betty Meggers, among others--all had discoveries that lead to the following conclusion: America was visited by Europeans well before the time of Christopher Columbus. Divided into two main parts, this work is a comprehensive study of the evidence suggesting that ancient European and Asian mariners visited the United States more than 1000 years ago. The first section is an historical overview of the external evidence that would support the theory of ancient incursions to America. A review of ancient ships and the currents in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans is offered. The experiences of several seagoing peoples (such as Polynesians and Vikings) are explored. Both legendary voyages and modern adventures of mariners are discussed. Ancient transoceanic stories are also examined. From mammoth stone chambers of New York and New England to inscribed stones found in ancient graves from Minnesota to West Virginia, the second half of the work focuses on the American evidence for ancient visitations to the U.S., primarily in the northeast section of the country. Several alleged ancient sites are also explored in this richly illustrated work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truth of life well lived is simple; it always has been. Throughout humankind's history, the Father/Mother God's guiding light has shone through a band of humble yet powerful brothers and sisters, masters all. The Great Brother-/Sisterhood of Light has shone the light of its love throughout the world during all of its evolution. Most of its loving membership has remained beyond the shadowy veil of human consciousness, but here and there, its presence has been felt directly on the Earth plane. Usually hidden away from the chaos and darkness of the world's busy highways and byways, the masters have remained anonymous to all but a few worthy souls who have dedicated themselves selflessly to the laws of love and truth, and have served humanity humbly in a thousand different ways throughout history. These are the disciples of the masters, souls who act as instruments stepping down the powerful frequencies of pure love into digestible portions that humanity can use to brighten its way
