Book Versions of Virginity in Late Medieval England

Download or read book Versions of Virginity in Late Medieval England written by Sarah Salih and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2001 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval virginity theory explored through study of martyrs, nuns and Margery Kempe. This study looks at the question of what it meant to be a virgin in the Middle Ages, and the forms which female virginity took. It begins with the assumptions that there is more to virginity than sexual inexperience, and that virginity may be considered as a gendered identity, a role which is performed rather than biologically determined. The author explores versions of virginity as they appear in medieval saints' lives, in the institutional chastity of nuns, and as shown in the book of Margery Kempe, showing how it can be active, contested, vulnerable but also recoverable. SARAH SALIH teaches in the Department of English at King's College London.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sodomy in Early Modern Europe is a collection of essays that reflect closely the main areas of debate within gay historiography. In particular, for the last twenty years scholars have questioned the nature of early modern sodomy. The contributors have responded to these questions in a number of different and often apparently contradictory ways, and the essays which make up this collection reflect this diversity of approach. The volume includes essays on sodomy in English Protestant history writing, and sodomy in Calvin’s Geneva and early modern Venice.

Book The Culture of Food in England 1200 1500

Download or read book The Culture of Food in England 1200 1500 written by C. M. Woolgar and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this revelatory work of social history, C. M. Woolgar shows that food in late-medieval England was far more complex, varied, and more culturally significant than we imagine today. Drawing on a vast range of sources, he charts how emerging technologies as well as an influx of new flavors and trends from abroad had an impact on eating habits across the social spectrum. From the pauper’s bowl to elite tables, from early fad diets to the perceived moral superiority of certain foods, and from regional folk remedies to luxuries such as lampreys, Woolgar illuminates desire, necessity, daily rituals, and pleasure across four centuries.

Book Conciliarism and Heresy in Fifteenth Century England

Download or read book Conciliarism and Heresy in Fifteenth Century England written by Alexander Russell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general councils of the fifteenth century constituted a remarkable political experiment, which used collective decision-making to tackle important problems facing the church. Such problems had hitherto received rigid top-down management from Rome. However, at Constance and Basle, they were debated by delegates of different ranks from across Europe and resolved through majority voting. Fusing the history of political thought with the study of institutional practices, this innovative study relates the procedural innovations of the general councils and their anti-heretical activities to wider trends in corporate politics, intellectual culture and pastoral reform. Alexander Russell argues that the acceptance of collective decision-making at the councils was predicated upon the prevalence of group participation and deliberation in small-scale corporate culture. Conciliarism and Heresy in Fifteenth-Century England offers a fundamental reassessment of England's relationship with the general councils, revealing how political thought, heresy, and collective politics were connected.
