Book excerpt: Much attention and condemnation has been directed towards the tragedy of the African slave trade, which took place between the 16 th and the 19 th centuries. However, another equally despicable trade in humans was taking place around the same time in the Mediterranean. It is estimated that up to 1.25 million Europeans were enslaved by the so-called Barbary corsairs, and their lives were just as pitiful as their African counterparts. They have come to be known as the white slaves of Barbary. This story starts from this time where some never heard of such a place ,others have known but kept quiet, this not talked about world called Vice Versa.

Book The Accidental Masterpiece

Download or read book The Accidental Masterpiece written by Michael Kimmelman and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2006-07-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller—a dazzling and inspirational survey of how art can be found and appreciated in everyday life Michael Kimmelman, the prominent New York Times writer and a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books, is known as a deep and graceful writer across the disciplines of art and music and also as a pianist who understands something about the artist's sensibility from the inside. Readers have come to expect him not only to fill in their knowledge about art but also to inspire them to think about connections between art and the larger world - which is to say, to think more like an artist. Kimmelman's many years of contemplating and writing about art have brought him to this wise, wide-ranging, and long-awaited book. It explores art as life's great passion, revealing what we can learn of life through pictures and sculptures and the people who make them. It assures us that art - points of contact with the exceptional that are linked straight to the heart - can be found almost anywhere and everywhere if only our eyes are opened enough to recognize it. Kimmelman regards art, like all serious human endeavors, as a passage through which a larger view of life may come more clearly into focus. His book is a kind of adventure or journey. It carries the message that many of us may not yet have learned how to recognize the art in our own lives. To do so is something of an art itself. A few of the characters Kimmelman describes, like Bonnard and Chardin, are great artists. But others are explorers and obscure obsessives, paint-by-numbers enthusiasts, amateur shutterbugs, and collectors of strange odds and ends. Yet others, like Charlotte Solomon, a girl whom no one considered much of an artist but who secretly created a masterpiece about the world before her death in Auschwitz, have reserved spots for themselves in history, or not, with a single work that encapsulates a whole life. Kimmelman reminds us of the Wunderkammer, the cabinet of wonders - the rage in seventeenth-century Europe and a metaphor for the art of life. Each drawer of the cabinet promises something curious and exotic, instructive and beautiful, the cabinet being a kind of ideal, self-contained universe that makes order out of the chaos of the world. The Accidental Masterpiece is a kind of literary Wunderkammer, filled with lively surprises and philosophical musings. It will inspire readers to imagine their own personal cabinet of wonders.

Download or read book Pure Inductive Logic written by Jeffrey Paris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pure inductive logic is the study of rational probability treated as a branch of mathematical logic. This monograph, the first devoted to this approach, brings together the key results from the past seventy years plus the main contributions of the authors and their collaborators over the last decade to present a comprehensive account of the discipline within a single unified context. The exposition is structured around the traditional bases of rationality, such as avoiding Dutch Books, respecting symmetry and ignoring irrelevant information. The authors uncover further rationality concepts, both in the unary and in the newly emerging polyadic languages, such as conformity, spectrum exchangeability, similarity and language invariance. For logicians with a mathematical grounding, this book provides a complete self-contained course on the subject, taking the reader from the basics up to the most recent developments. It is also a useful reference for a wider audience from philosophy and computer science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I could have written stories, fables, anecdotes, etc., like so many authors have. But when I am reading fiction, I often wish I knew what the author was really trying to say. I didnt want a long distance runaround. Rather I wanted the plain and simple directions to the destination s/he had in mind. I dont believe the genius is in the details, but in getting the message across. So I wrote down what I know, not what my imagination could spin or weave with it. I tried to be clear and to stay on the subject. I tried to be lyrical, heavy and familiar. In this book, A Schizophrenics Notes, I often write about inner space, and the risks inherent to connecting with others, or of failing to connect with others, with our inner space. As much as I would have liked to have given the reader a handle or steering wheel to hold on to, that didnt happen. I certainly dont have a handle. One of my favorite lines in my writing is a Buddhist one, The way that can be described isnt the Way.
