Book Virtually Disastrous

Download or read book Virtually Disastrous written by Gary Thomas and published by assist publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you lead virtual teams to high performance? Globalisation is here to stay - yet no one is really prepared. Many teams tasked with managing globalisation are clearly out of their depth. This is primarily because these teams work virtually and internationally over great distances. The team members no longer sit face to face in their offices, instead they communicate across countries and continents via modern communication media. Leading a conventional team to top performance is difficult enough, not least because of the inevitable group dynamic involved. When the context becomes virtual, this all too often leads to management failure. This book describes the art of leading virtual teams in an entertaining style including practical tips, helpful suggestions, and numerous illustrative examples that span many industries and countries along the four core challenges of virtual team leadership today. Gary Thomas is a trainer, consultant and managing director at assist International Human Resources, an internationally operating HR organisation based in Germany. As many of his clients are international organisations and corporations, he has been assisting intercultural and virtual teams and leaders for over 20 years to develop their full potential.

Book Crafting the Future of International Higher Education in Asia via Systems Change and Innovation

Download or read book Crafting the Future of International Higher Education in Asia via Systems Change and Innovation written by Angela Yung Chi Hou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-29 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses the most essential topics in understanding the development and changes of higher educational systems in Asia after the outbreak of the pandemic, and explores the transformative, international and innovative moves from an Asian perspective. The topics covered in the book are timely in that higher education in Asia was severely limited during the tumultuous time of the pandemic, including three themes- 1. How the pandemic drives system reform and quality management; 2. How can universities maintain transnational partnerships and attract global talent; 3. How would faculty members innovate teaching pedagogy and reassess student learning experiences. This timely and well-researched book provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities for national, regional, and international higher education created by the recent pandemic as well as technological and geopolitical changes. The lucid analysis of key issues and trends will be useful to academics, policymakers, and researchers within Asia and beyond. Professor Jane Knight, Ontario Institute for studies in Education, University of Toronto This book sets out important thinking for the post-pandemic era in Asian higher education. Based on valuable experience across a diverse region, this book highlights the opportunity to reimagine the future trajectory for higher education. As more of the Asia-Pacific moves toward mass and even universal systems of higher education, it exerts greater influence on higher education around the world. This book offers practical analysis that is culturally grounded in the rich civilizations of Asia about ubiquitous issues in higher education, including social equity, human agency, program quality, innovative pedagogy, academic governance, private sector initiative, knowledge building, and a new form of internationalization. It offers a sensible launchpad for a policy agenda. Professor Gerard Postiglione, Emeritus Professor, The University of Hong Kong

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than half a century after the Holocaust, in countries where Jews make up just a tiny fraction of the population, products of Jewish culture (or what is perceived as Jewish culture) have become very viable components of the popular public domain. But how can there be a visible and growing Jewish presence in Europe, without the significant presence of Jews? Ruth Ellen Gruber explores this phenomenon, traveling through Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, and elsewhere to observe firsthand the many facets of a remarkable trend. Across the continent, Jewish festivals, performances, publications, and study programs abound. Jewish museums have opened by the dozen, and synagogues and Jewish quarters are being restored, often as tourist attractions. In Europe, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, klezmer music concerts, exhibitions, and cafes with Jewish themes are drawing enthusiastic--and often overwhelmingly non-Jewish--crowds. In what ways, Gruber asks, do non-Jews embrace and enact Jewish culture, and for what reasons? For some, the process is a way of filling in communist-era blanks. For others, it is a means of coming to terms with the Nazi legacy or a key to building (or rebuilding) a democratic and tolerant state. Clearly, the phenomenon has as many motivations as manifestations. Gruber investigates the issues surrounding this "virtual Jewish world" in three specific areas: the reclaiming of the built heritage, including synagogues, cemeteries, and former ghettos and Jewish quarters; the representation of Jewish culture through tourism and museums; and the role of klezmer and Yiddish music as typical "Jewish cultural products." Although she features the relationship of non-Jews to the Jewish phenomenon, Gruber also considers its effect on local Jews and Jewish communities and the revival of Jewish life in Europe. Her view of how the trend has developed and where it may be going is thoughtful, colorful, and very well informed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern over the relationship between human rights, social justice and international trade competitiveness has led to the inclusion of the issue of the rights of workers in the agenda of leading international organizations. International labour issues once seen as a monopoly preoccupation of the ILO (International Labour Organization) have now become important issues in other international organizations, as well as within regional trading blocs. This original study examines the extent to which international labour issues have become issue of concern within the European Union, the ILO, the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development), and the WTO (World Trade Organization). The internationally known authors of this book have been long-time observers of the work of international organizations on labour rights and globalisation and have been leaders in the effort to bring issue of social justice onto the international agenda. Social Issues, Globalisation and International Institutions: Labour Rights and the EU, ILO, OECD and WTO is the culmination of a project of the Program for the Study of International Organization(s) (PSIO) at the Graduate Institute of Institute of International Studies, Geneva, Switzerland (HEI), supported by a grant from the Ford Foundation. Book Expatriates and Managing Global Mobility

Download or read book Expatriates and Managing Global Mobility written by Soo Min Toh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-23 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multinational enterprises continue to rely heavily upon expatriates as part of their global workforce. These expatriates, whose exact employment contract may take different forms, are assigned to help them develop global skills as well as to foster knowledge transfer. But managing this expatriate workforce is extremely complex, requiring a questioning of assumptions and sensitivity to new social and cultural dynamics. This book sets out to examine the problem of expatriate management through an I/O Psychology lens. Each chapter draws upon the expertise of scholars from around the world to provide insights into the latest research findings and remaining needs, pertaining to a wide variety of issues. The contributors of this book review the current state of the research of the issue at hand and then make recommendations for where the new frontiers of the research should be in the coming decades. This volume covers four sets of issues pertaining to expatriate management and global mobility in depth. First, the different decision points organizations must make about assigning someone to an overseas location for some period of time; second the different categories of employees in the multinational corporation and their unique characteristics and challenges; third, the various issues and implications of managing a globally mobile workforce; and fourth, the unique contexts of global mobility. Overarching future research themes are identified that lay out the research agenda for the coming decades. By bringing together key research, this book aims to help I/O psychologists understand, explore, and identify new ways of contributing to the understanding of the issues involved in managing an expatriate workforce. Incorporating state-of-the art I/O psychology research in this unique context bears the promise of yielding important new paradigms and practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses how Western universities have constructed themselves as global providers of education, and are driven to be globally competitive. It examines how the term ‘international’ has been exploited by the market in the form of government educational policies and agencies, host institutions, academia and the mass media. The book explores matters relating to the role of the English language in international education in general and the field of TESOL in particular. It demonstrates how English and TESOL have exercised their symbolic power, coupled with the desire for international education, to create convenient identities for international TESOL students. It also discusses the complexity surrounding and informing these students’ painful yet sophisticated appropriation of and resistance to the convenient labels they are subjected to.
