Download or read book Hymeneutics written by Marie H. Loughlin and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the socio-medical and anatomical construction of the virginal female body in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century texts in order to develop a historically and culturally specific understanding of virginity and chastity in early modern England. This investigation permits a reevaluation of a series of plays by John Fletcher and his collaborators approximately between 1609 and 1620 that concentrates heavily on the virginal and chaste woman. Instead of seeing Fletcher's frequent, violent interrogations of these women as springing from his personal, pornographic proclivities (a charge which has often been levelled), contemporary medical and anatomical discourses demonstrate that the uncertainty about women's virginity which fuels such interrogations is widespread in the early modern period.

Book Casanova s Women

Download or read book Casanova s Women written by Judith Summers and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-02-05 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Told from the perspective of his innumerable sexual conquests, Casanova's Women renders a vivid flesh-and-blood portrait of the famed philanderer, clearing away the myth while illuminating the lives of the women who have too long languished in the shadows. The eighteenth-century Venetian adventurer Giacomo Casanova used his magnetic personality to talk his way into the beds of more than two hundred women. Charming, brilliant, and devastatingly attractive, he claimed to like women and to understand their emotional and sexual needs. To those he truly loved, he was the perfect lover--thoughtful, generous, and imaginative. To others he could be ruthless, selfish, and dishonest. Judith Summers's exuberant and candidly erotic biography reveals how Giacomo Casanova, a sickly son of Venetian actors, went on to transcend the rigid social boundaries of the eighteenth century to keep company with kings and beguile beautiful women. With original research culled from period diaries, wills, correspondence, and memoirs, this unique look at the legendary lady-killer gives voice to the many women on whose naked backs Casanova's reputation was built.

Book Encyclopedia of Comparative Iconography

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Comparative Iconography written by Helene E. Roberts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 2586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998. The Encyclopedia of Comparative Iconography compares the uses of iconographic themes from mythology, the Bible and other sacred texts, literature, and popular culture in works of art through various periods, cultures, and genres. Art historians now tend to study narrative themes depicted in works of art in relation to such subjects as gender and sexuality, politics and power, ownership and possession, ceremony and ritual, legitimacy and authority. The Encyclopedia of Comparative Iconography reflects these new approaches by ordering the themes of various iconographic sources in particular biblical, mythological, and literary texts according to these new emphases. Each handsomely illustrated entry discusses the major relevant iconographic narratives and the historical background of each theme. A list of selected works of art that accompanies each essay guides the reader to examples in art that depict the theme under discussion. Each essay includes a list of suggested reading that provides further sources of information about the themes. A general bibliography of reference books is listed separately and can be used in association with all the essays. With 119 entries written by 42 experts, the Encyclopedia of Comparative Iconography is an important reference work for art historians, students of art history, artists, and the general reader.
