Book Career Crisis in the School Superintendency

Download or read book Career Crisis in the School Superintendency written by Bruce S. Cooper and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2000 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, validated survey instrument, SPEAR (Superintendents' Professional Expectations and Advancement Review), asked top executives about their opinions, skills, perceptions on a range of career concerns, and future interests. Of the nation's 13,500 school superintendents, a random sample of 2,979 was selected, segmented by district size. The overall finding is that superintendents are proud and satisfied with their own accomplishments, but greatly concerned about the prospect of finding talented leaders to take their places. Some of the questions explored in the survey include the following: Is there a crisis in attracting educators into the profession? How satisfied are superintendents with their careers? How mobile are superintendents? What are their professional concerns? What personal concerns and motives do they express? and What skills do they bring to the job? The report provides a brief description of its findings and recommendations as well. The appendix contains the SPEAR questionnaire. (Contains 21 references.) (DFR)

Book An Examination of North Carolina Public School Superintendents Perceptions of Women in the Superintendency

Download or read book An Examination of North Carolina Public School Superintendents Perceptions of Women in the Superintendency written by Mary A. Hales and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, women hold the majority of teaching positions in education and comprise 70 percent of all teachers in the United States. Administrators come from the teaching ranks, and men hold most of the positions (Feldman, Jorgensen, and Poling, 1998). Men continue to dominate educational administration, particularly the superintendency (Holloway, 1998, Ryder, 1994). The number of women represented in school superintendency throughout the United States has been minimal. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine North Carolina superintendents' perceptions of women in the role of the superintendency, to determine whether there were differences in superintendents' perceptions of leadership characteristics based on gender, and to determine whether there were differences in superintendents' perceptions of obstacles and barriers to obtaining the position of superintendent. The study employed a quantitative approach to conduct the research. Research (Bjork, 2000; Flora, 2001; Guptil, 2003; Hickey-Gramke, 2007) suggests that the rare female who has made it to the superintendency differ from her male counterpart, in intelligence, education, teaching, experience, work attitudes, and drive. Documentation obtained from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction revealed that as of October 2007, only 25 of the 115 public school superintendents are women. The data in the study also indicates that only seven had ten or more years of experience as a superintendent and that 18 have been in the position for nine years or less. An Examination of the Disparity of Women Leadership in the Superintendency Survey Instrument was administered to each of the superintendents in North Carolina. Based on the findings, the researcher recommends that further research be conducted to: (1) include women superintendents in other states and compared to the findings from this study to determine if the views are similar or different and (2) determine local school board members' perceptions with regards to hiring practices for women.

Book Career Pathways and Perceptions of Experiences that Influenced the Attainment of the Superintendency

Download or read book Career Pathways and Perceptions of Experiences that Influenced the Attainment of the Superintendency written by Kitty Summers and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study explored the phenomenon of career pathways of public school superintendents in the Greater Capital Region of New York State. The study explored the career pathways of sixteen superintendents and their perceptions of career pathways and experiences that influenced attainment of the superintendency. This study was guided by the following primary research questions: What were the career pathways of the superintendents? What were the superintendents' perceptions of their career pathways and the experiences that influenced the attainment of the superintendency? The exploration of career pathways and perceptions of experiences that influenced attainment of the superintendency were examined utilizing the factor of years of service and gender. Career pathways findings revealed that superintendents followed a career pathway that included teaching, building level position, and central office experience before obtaining the position of superintendent. Findings revealed that superintendents' experiences must be vast and diverse to prepare system leaders for success. The experiences in the position of assistant superintendent were most noted by participants as being the most valued position in which to gain knowledge and experience as a system leader. The findings indicated that the perspectives of both males and females were similar concerning experiences and skill set deemed most valued by participants. This included experiences in communication, relationships, instructional leadership, management of budget, deep understanding of how 'politics' works, and awareness of legislative issues. Factors that influenced attainment included skill set development, the concept of 'fit' to the district, and the roles of mentors during the career pathway, and in some cases, for women, the approval and guidance of an influential male.

Book A Comparative Study of Northern and Southern Women Superintendents Perceptions of Personal and Professional Barriers and Leadership Styles

Download or read book A Comparative Study of Northern and Southern Women Superintendents Perceptions of Personal and Professional Barriers and Leadership Styles written by LaForrest Lane-Washington and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare Northern and Southern women superintendents east of the Mississippi River and Mason-Dixon Line, describe their demographics, perceived barriers and leadership styles. This research study compared women superintendents from twenty-three states personal and professional characteristics, and perceived leadership styles in the superintendency. The purpose of this study was to discover the personal and professional barriers that impede and promote Northern and Southern women superintendents' tenure in the superintendency with emphasis on ethnicity, district size and other demographic characteristics. The study also documents perceived barriers, overcoming barriers and words of wisdom for women seeking the superintendency. Surveys were sent to 800 women superintendents. Three hundred of them responded, however 270 were complete and deemed usable for this study. Quantitative data was entered into a SPSS database for comparison and qualitative data was sorted by themes for a more in-depth understanding of the participants. The findings revealed that the majority of women superintendents worked in rural school districts with student populations of 1,000 to 2,500. They had varying career experiences including principals, curriculum instructionists and directors. The study found that most of the superintendents achieved their first superintendency job at 40-49 years of age. The majority of women superintendents obtained degrees beyond Masters. Northern and Southern women superintendents perceived many of the same barriers toward attainment and placement in the superintendency. The personal barrier that most affected their career was family, while the professional barrier that impacted their career was social assumptions. Northern and Southern women superintendents described the same leadership style while serving in the superintendency. Northern and Southern women superintendents identified being well read, knowing themselves, global thinking and perseverance as characteristics of importance in the quest and placement in the superintendency. A replication of this study should be conducted with an increased number of participants from other states to include school board members' perceptions. Another recommendation would be for a more in-depth study on the advancement of women in the superintendency with a focus on those states that have limited number of women superintendents.
