Book Virginia Life in Fiction Classic Reprint

Download or read book Virginia Life in Fiction Classic Reprint written by Jay B. Hubbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Virginia Life in Fiction When I began this study seven years ago, I hoped to do for my native state, if possible, what Mr. H. S. Krans has so delightfully done for Ireland in his Irish Life in Irish Fiction. I did not foresee that the different nature of my materials would force me to write a very different kind of book. In particular, I failed to see that I should be compelled to devote so much space to historical legends, which are so intimately connected with Virginia fiction that they could not be ignored. I hope no one will think that my comments upon the makers of these legends are malicious. I have come to the conclusion that far too little attention has been paid to the very close connection between American fiction and American social history. In a study of the other backgrounds of American fiction, on which I am now working, I hope to do for other sections what I have done for Virginia. This dissertation was completed over two years ago, and it would have been printed in full and at a much earlier date but for a rascal of a publisher into whose hands I was so unlucky as to fall. For this abstract I have rewritten and expanded my introductory chapter so that it now contains the more important conclusions of a three-hundred-page manuscript. The five other chapters are very briefly epitomized, but the bibliography is printed entire. I wish to express my appreciation of the courtesy of Dr. H. R. Mcllwaine of the Virginia State Library and of the officials of the New York Public Library and of the libraries of Columbia University and the New York Society. I am deeply indebted to my colleague, Professor John Owen Beaty, for the privilege of reading his forthcoming John Esten Cooke: Virginian and for other information concerning Cooke's life and work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richard of Jamestown: A Story of the Virginia Colony The purpose of this series of stories is to show the children, and even those who have already taken up the study of history, the home life of the colonists with whom they meet in their books. To this end every effort has been made to avoid anything savor ing of romance, and to deal only with facts, so far as that is possible, while describing the daily life of those people who conquered the wilderness whether for conscience sake or for gain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Douglass Farm: Juvenile Story of Life in Virginia There is no Home Book for Christmas and New Year's Day; but, instead of a proverbial tale, Cousin Alice greets you with one that she has read and approved, and commends to all who have her own volumes on their book-shelves. In her Christmas story four years ago - a long time for little people to remember, - she promised some day to give a description of the Old Virginia Homestead in which it was written. That was in the introduction to Patient Waiting no Loss, which will prove true in this instance; for the story of Douglass Farm describes these very scenes - the old Hall, the lawn, the avenue, the chubby little negro children who ran to Open the carriage gate in our drives, the Aunties and Uncles of the large kitchen department, - the bountiful Christmas cheer, and the little people for whom it was made ready. All this is described by the young hostess who welcomed her to Margret Hall, - and far better than Cousin Alice would have been able to, inasmuch as it was her birthplace and childhood's home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holcombes: A Story of Virginia Home-Life I say I have avoided personalities, and vet I plead guilty, so far as that humble race is concerned who have been so intimately connected with our domestic relations for centuries. With regard to them, I will say, that each portrait has been drawn from nature, - that great fountain head of truth. Each one who has found a niche in my gallery of family portraits lives as distinctly in my mem ory as if seen but yesterday. I have even retained their peculiarities of expression, as essentially necessary to a faithful portraiture of their characters. The place was a city in Virginia. When and where a small party of men had assembled together in a remote room of a house, not too public. About the conduct of each there was a sort of nervous rest lessness exhibited, which Showed too plainly that conscience was at work, or that they found them selves in a novel position; perhaps about to assume relations towards their fellow-citizens, the virtue, if not the policy of which, might be questioned. Scarce a word was breathed, and when breathed, amounted not even to a respectable whisper. -melancholy seemed hovering around those dark walls; no cheerful light issued from the dark lan tern to dispel' the gloom. He was merely riding to a distant part of the plantation he controlled, to inspect the work of the negroes there and to give directions for its proper doing. But he liked the company of his dogs and enjoyed their mad relish of the morning. The glory of it gladdened his own spirit in Spite of the vexing problems that were never quite absent from his mind. Boyd Westover, a young man of not more than twenty-three or twenty-four years, had never known a serious care until the spring of that year. Then a burden of responsibility had fallen upon him that threatened to bend even his broad shoulders beneath its weight. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Noanett: A Story of Old Virginia and the Massachusetts Bay Time printed. Though first set down (as appears by the context) for the edification of the writer's children, Mr. Carew's views upon some subjects, notably Cromwell and the later Puritans, would have rendered their publication inopportune in New England at a time much before the present. But if he sets forth these matters in a somewhat novel light, he is severer still upon certain phases of early life in Virginia. He speaks without fear or favour, and I have printed it as written, altering only the spelling; and although occasionally he uses words only suited to the robuster stomachs of his time, I have let them stand: partly that the sweet and noble temper of his story atones for them, partly that our own stomachs are a trifle over queasy (as to words alone). To use his own, the fight ing companies of the Old Dominion were but a ribald crew and the events, even the incidents, which he narrates I have found curiously verified in memoirs nearly contemporary, notably the diaries of his acquaintance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philip Randolph: A Tale of Virginia It was thought advisable to plant colonies in such parts of America as had been discovered by the Eng lish, and a charter was granted, empowering the li censed to make settlements on whatever'lands they chose to select, and that all who thus settled them selves should hold their property from the sovereigns of England. All these privileges were conferred by Queen Elizabeth, without reference to the people or natives her subjects would probably find on these strangely-acquired territories. Sir Walter Raleigh had the honor of giving a name to a beautiful tract of country lying on the eastern shores of North America, between the latitudes of 31 and 420, calling it vir ginia, in honor of his queen; but James 1. Divided the country into two parts, one of which received the name of New England, and the other retained that of Virginia, which was the most ancient and most val uable of the British colonies in North America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Gentlemen of Virginia: A Novel of the Old Regime in the Old Dominion In this novel I have endeavored to fulfil one of the chief functions of history in the modern conception of historical writing. Incidentally to the telling of a love story, I have sought to present a faithful picture of the life of the time and region of which I have written; to set forth its manners, habits and conditions with accuracy and in detail to por tray the character of the people, to show what were their ideals and their standards, and to present them as they were to readers of a later and far less picturesque time. In aid of this purpose I have mentioned many details of custom and condition which may seem trivial in themselves, but which are imperatively necessary to the verisimilitude of the picture. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Virginia Cousin, and Bar Harbor Tales As he cantered along the equestrian byways of the Park, and felt, without noting, the stir of new life in nature, he grew light of heart and buoyant. And as this condition increased, his thoughts crys tallized around the image of Katherine Ainger. She, too, loved her morning ride; no doubt he should meet her presently. He had not seen her since Thursday of last week, when he had taken her in to dinner at Mrs. Cartwright's; and he had a vague idea she had resented him a little on that occasion. Her talk had been a trifle baflling, her eyes evasive. But she had worn a stunning gown, and was by all odds the best-looking woman of the lot. How well she sat at table, by the way! What an admirable figure for a man who would be forced to entertain, to place at the head of his board in perpetuity!
