Download or read book Virginia Gold Mines written by Bryan Hanger and published by . This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated paperback edition of Virginia Gold Mines - The Golden Piedmont, A Historical Perspective from Virginia native Ben Beydler traces the roots of gold in the Commonwealth all the way back to one of the nation’s founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, who was responsible for the first gold discovery in the state. Certainly, California is at the top of the list for most folks when talk turns to gold, but Virginia’s history with the precious metal is just as colorful and entertaining. Jefferson, Alexander Spotswood, Henry Ford, and Commodore Robert Stockton are just a few of the historical figures who at one time or another had their hands on some of Virginia’s gold. The book not only traces the history of gold discoveries in Virginia from the 1800s to the present, but it details the many different mines that have been open and operating during that time period from the Potomac to the Piedmont. Everything from geology of the state to the evolution of mining practices is addressed. Virginia Gold Mines – The Golden Piedmont – A Historical Perspective is both educational and informative, and the images it conjures up just might make you want to run out and buy a metal detector, or do a little panning by the river the next time you’re on vacation.

Download or read book Placer Gold Deposits of Nevada Classic Reprint written by Maureen G. Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Placer Gold Deposits of Nevada Following the discovery of placers at Gold Canyon, placer discoveries in Nevada were broadly in three periods: the 1860's to 1880's, when many small deposits throughout the State were discovered and sporadically worked and several large placers were discovered and extensively worked; the short period between 1906 and 1910, when very rich placers were dis covered at Lynn, Battle Mountain, Manhattan, and Round Mountain; the early 1930's, when economic conditions created by the depression caused a renewed interest in placer mining, and many individuals sought, and a few discovered, new placer areas throughout the State. The location of the placers described in this report is shown on plate 1. Very little factual information can be found about the early periods of placer mining in Nevada. For many placers, the only reports available are hearsay estimates of production and speculations about the extent of the placer ground based on remnants of placer pits, shafts, and other workings. Many of the placers said to have had a high production between 1860 and 1890 were worked by Chinese miners who came to Nevada dur ing the building of the railroads and stayed on to work at mining and other activities. The Chinese were reputed to be secretive with their earnings from the placers and did not ship the gold to the mint by Wells Fargo or other shippers. They worked the gravels very thoroughly in areas where American miners did not wish to expend great labor to win the gold. The placers in the Sierra and Spring Valley districts, Pershing County, were worked by Chinese miners; they have a very high estimated production before 1900 and a comparatively low known production since that time. Download or read book Mining Language written by Allison Margaret Bigelow and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-04-16 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mineral wealth from the Americas underwrote and undergirded European colonization of the New World; American gold and silver enriched Spain, funded the slave trade, and spurred Spain's northern European competitors to become Atlantic powers. Building upon works that have narrated this global history of American mining in economic and labor terms, Mining Language is the first book-length study of the technical and scientific vocabularies that miners developed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as they engaged with metallic materials. This language-centric focus enables Allison Bigelow to document the crucial intellectual contributions Indigenous and African miners made to the very engine of European colonialism. By carefully parsing the writings of well-known figures such as Cristobal Colon and Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo y Valdes and lesser-known writers such Alvaro Alonso Barba, a Spanish priest who spent most of his life in the Andes, Bigelow uncovers the ways in which Indigenous and African metallurgists aided or resisted imperial mining endeavors, shaped critical scientific practices, and offered imaginative visions of metalwork. Her creative linguistic and visual analyses of archival fragments, images, and texts in languages as diverse as Spanish and Quechua also allow her to reconstruct the processes that led to the silencing of these voices in European print culture.
