The subjects of Rainville’s research are not statesmen or plantation elites; they are hidden residents, people who are typically underrepresented in historical research but whose stories are essential for a complete understanding of our national past. Rainville studied above-ground funerary remains in over 150 historic African American cemeteries to provide an overview of mortuary and funerary practices from the late eighteenth century to the end of the twentieth. Combining historical, anthropological, and archaeological perspectives, she analyzes documents—such as wills, obituaries, and letters—as well as gravestones and graveside offerings. Rainville’s findings shed light on family genealogies, the rise and fall of segregation, and attitudes toward religion and death. As many of these cemeteries are either endangered or already destroyed, the book includes a discussion on the challenges of preservation and how the reader may visit, and help preserve, these valuable cultural assets.

Book excerpt: In southern graveyards through the first decades of the twentieth century, the Confederate South was commemorated by tombstones and memorials, in Confederate flags, and in Memorial Day speeches and burial rituals. Cemeteries spoke the language of southern memory, and identity was displayed in ritualistic form -- inscribed on tombs, in texts, and in bodily memories and messages. Katharine DuPre Lumpkin, Lillian Smith, and Pauli Murray wove sites of regional memory, particularly Confederate burial sites, into their autobiographies as a way of emphasizing how segregation divided more than just southern landscapes and people. Darlene O'Dell here considers the southern graveyard as one of three sites of memory -- the other two being the southern body and southern memoir -- upon which the region's catastrophic race relations are inscribed. O'Dell shows how Lumpkin, Smith, and Murray, all witnesses to commemorations of the Confederacy and efforts to maintain the social order of the New South, contended through their autobiographies against Lost Cause versions of southern identity. Sites of Southern Memory elucidates the ways in which these three writers joined in the dialogue on regional memory by placing the dead southern body as a site of memory within their texts. Book excerpt: In the 1960s, a few volunteers at the Mary Ball Washington Museum (MBWM) in Lancaster, Virginia began collecting inscriptions and making brief location notes on the rapidly disappearing family cemeteries of Lancaster County. In early 1999, the compilers of this book began to complete the task by making an extensive search for family burial sites and adding inscriptions from church and community cemeteries. We naively said we would be finished by the end of that year! Clyde and Carolyn Ratcliffe "beat the bushes" to locate family cemeteries, some with a single gravestone. Peggy and John Hill transcribed stones in church and community cemeteries. We found ancient and modern flat table markers. We found ordinary markers with only birth and death dates. There were homemade, handlettered markers of cement and even a few made of wood. We found a few graves marked with statuary and many marked with obelisks. We hope we have found the grave marker that is of vital interest to you.
